Have any of you run into a bad can of ea-40? I made two bow s from a form that has been proven to be a good design, with the same can of ea-40. Both bows with that glue blew up
-
What kind of cores. was the wood dry enough. Did you change anything about your proceedure. Need pics of the failed bows.
-
X2
-
How old was the EA-40, what is your storage temp and did part B(hardener) smell caustic?
I just glued up a Bow with some EA-40 that I've been trying to use up. It's 2.5 yrs old, but stored at 60deg mostly. No problems. Only a faint smell so far.
-
Ash cores, did everything the same as I normally do to my knowledge, I'll try to post a picture of my current bow off the same form. I'm camping so I don't have my bow with me to take better pictures. The part B did smell strong.
-
So you have two with ash? Is it the same ash in both bows? Awhile back I had two bows blow using the same walnut. I knew everything else was the same but the walnut was the common thing in both bows if the hardener is real smelly your glue may be bad also. Get new glue and do a test strip using some of the ash.
-
Yup same ash as well!

This time last year there was a rash of bow failures due to smooth on from many bowyers. If it was made in July of 2017 it is definitely the epoxy!
-
Look on Trade Archers.com and search for the thread titled Frustration.
-
Yep one of the big sponsors over there actually. run smooth on in the ground.
-
Which sponsor was that Mike?
-
Jess you have PM
-
Can anybody elaborate on the bad Smooth-on? I not a member at Trade archers, and don't want to join just to read a thread.
-
I couldn't find trade archers.com

I am a member there and have to register to read the posts. I come up with nothing on that search tho.

So the question is, did Lee use the cryptic Epoxy or not?
From the progression of this thread, we might not ever know :deadhorse:
-
Sorry guys I'm camping so not super responsive, but I don't know when the can was made because I emptied it with the last bow and threw it out
-
Lee, it looks like if you want a conclusion, you are going to have to make one more Bow, same design, same materials, fresh epoxy. Otherwise it's all speculation.
-
Yup that's what I decided to! I'm on it
