Title: Who Also Enjoys Planting Foodplots?
Post by: Basinboy on August 02, 2019, 03:28:18 AM
Anyone who does it knows it’s a labor of love because it is hard work and takes lots of time! I really enjoy turning the dirt, planting, watching it grow then seeing the wildlife reaping the rewards of my hard work.
Who else enjoys it? Please share your pictures!

I guess I can see where it may be fun in some locals, but here in eastern IA where I live the amount of bean and corn "edge" is so plentiful that planting a separate plot seems a bit more than redundant.  Thankful for it too.

That's essentially what I do with the vegetable garden. Work hard, plant it, water it, weed it, then watch the deer and the coons eat all of it  :banghead:

I put a ton of work and money into food plots and enjoy doing it.  I don't ever hunt on them but they do hold deer in a general area. Mainly it is good to get animals through the two critical stress periods of late summer and late winter.

Busting ground atop a tractor in the middle of the woods sounds like my kinda action bud. Beautiful place Corey!

Going to look at a new L3901 Kubota tomorrow. It's been a while since I planted anything so I might have some questions.

I live literally in a food plot, south central Iowa, (the entire state is a food plot),. But I get your love for tilling the ground, watching things as the grow. See your efforts produce what your hoping does bring a satisfaction.

Got to get started on renewing my fall food plot. Love it. Probably spend more on plots than equipment annually.

Crazy thing is it’s probably a fraction of what my dad, brother and cousin spend. However , it is worth it..... animals seen, increase in production and quality... animals harvested.

I am to the point where I enjoy the habitat work and food plotting almost as much as I enjoy the actual hunting. The acreage belongs to a family member and it was logged heavily several years ago. He asked me if I could clean up the bark and debris from the laydown areas and the skidder trails, so when I was done I planted winter rye and clover. Probably not much more than an acre total, but since I planted there seems to be a lot more deer using the property. Started working on invasive species removal last winter and have planted a few trees in the old laydown sites. Now that I'm retired this stuff keeps me in the woods and moving all year long.

I have a couple small plots and a few Apple trees. But never hunt them much. I choose to hunt all the public land around me.

By the way, look at the temperature in that trailcam pic.  If it’s not exact, it’s not far off.  The next week I was hanging tree stands when it was 102.

I must love it and have faith in annual and late fall/winter foodplots...running 9 foodplots this year on 171 acres..just submitted soil samples this week for the later fall/winter foodplots.
.
Most hunters have retired for the season by Thanksgiving...Often times, my best hunting is just starting....agricultural harvest efficiency has climbed significantly and the crop fields are quickly depleted by deer... the deer thus actively search out other available food sources...last seasons sightings of six large bucks, on my property, weren't sighted until Dec 2018 thru Jan 2019....I have become outright addicted to December and January hunting.

Note: 60% perennials
………..40% annuals

In one club we planted at least 30 plots, in a smaller club we had about 10, only 2 on my last hunting land and now I have only one on my 4 acres.

Early on I planted small ones with a front tine tiller, then a 4 wheeler chisel plow, next a compact Kubota and now I have a bigger Kubota and don't plant but one and till a few gardens.

I have never killed a deer off my plot but may this year as my health and hunting options have dwindled.

I have to put an electric fence up around my plot to keep the deer out so it can get a good start. Without the fence they pull the seedlings up as soon as they come up and leave bare ground.

This is one day after I took my electric fence down last year. The plot is small, about 25 yards square, it doesn't take long for the deer to eat it to the ground.

I wish I had a tractor back in my early days, I worked myself to death planting plots, I just got the tractor on the trailer. I mow a lot of ground, bush hog some and use the bucket all the time for odds and ends.
