Looking for a nice pack to be used for both hunting, but Mainly used as a pack for field quartering a whitetail out. Hikes out would be under 2 miles in Pennsylvania.

I like this Bison Gear. I don't remember the model name but it comes with a waterproof (blood proof) nylon bag that attaches inside and doubles the size of the pack. Very comfortable.

I took out an entire boned out large mule deer buck last fall, about two mile hike. I had my Badlands pack it barley held all of it and I tied the head on top. It worked but I wished I would have had my pack frame. The Badlands are about as good a pack as you can get but a whole deer is a big load for any day pack .

That’s a Lost River. I have the same pack, fantastic! Unfortunately they are not being made anymore and mine isn’t going anywhere!

I have used a Dwight Schuh external framed hunt pack and a internal frame Badlands 2800 pack to haul out elk quarters or boned out elk. Loads where 40# to 70#. Both did the job but the Badlands was more comfortable. Neither are being manufactured anymore but are available on eBay or Craigslist. Both packs compress well and make great day packs as well.

Good thread. I pack out a lot deer in areas you can’t get an ATV, and I’ve always just used my old college book bag. It works.

Thanks guys. Yeah I was thinking something with an internal type frame. This will not be deboned.
Lookin for something of good quality. And is kinda made for taking a load like that. But I don’t want to get to large in size so I can double as a hunting pack when I need it.

Bradley, you may want to look in to a Mystery Ranch Pop Up 18 or 28 pack. I got one fairly recently. Have not yet used it to haul meat. I got the 28 as it is a bit bigger than the 18. Fair sized day pack which doubles as a meat hauler. I am taking it to AK in Sept.
Don't think it would carry a full moose quarter. At 65 yoa I could not carry a full quarter anyway. That is why I hunt with three 38 yoa stud muffins. It will carry all I can carry. Would be perfect for whitetails. Go to the Mystery Ranch website. They have a video clip which shows how it breaks down to haul meat. Pretty neat idea and still not too bag as a day hunting pack.

Tons of quality packs to choose from these day. I would start with looking at mystery ranch, Quality pack for a little less money then other high end packs but prolly run a little heavier.

I get made fun of a lot when I do it but it’s the easiest way Ive found for whitetail. Medium ALICE pack w/frame. Bone in or bone out it works. Blood comes off easy and for the price at the surplus stores you can replace it easy enough.

Mystery Ranch gets my vote. I have a dragon slayer [no longer made] that has carried over 12 deer out. Last year it was an average sized AZ muley. Boned out. From the bottom of a canyon.

Badlands are hard to beat in my opinion. The 2200 is a great all around pack.

My favorite so far is EXO Mountain. Tons of options out there for great packs. All depends on what you want to spend. Lots of great packs used by backpackers for sale locally on craigslist that are not made for hunting but are great packs.

Lots of options. I carry a Stone Glacier 5200. Its one of the first models and slightly different than this years models but similar. Benefits are it is one of the lightest packs out there per volume packed. It packs down very small for day hunts and is able to pack as much as you can carry. I used this pack guiding elk hunts and carried the parts of at least 8 elk, many deer, bears, antelope, a mt goat and deer cape at the same time (and meat and parts of a spike camp), other things like tree stands and sheds. I think the main thing especially with deer is quartering them boneless and getting all that meat into one or a few game bags makes packing the meat blob lot easier. stone glacier also has a pretty trick game bag that fits the dimensions of the cavity made by extending the main pack off the frame. Many options again. Packing deer isn't hard in most packs so get one that's comfortable and fits your style.

I got a mystery ranch mule to use this year also for white tail. It’s not huge, has a great pack, light, and will hold a whole deer quartered out.

Another vote for good meat bags. They make it so much easier. I place the meat in them as I remove it, clean, quick, and easy to pick up and load/strap on. The extra lash points make for easy packing. I use them to hang the food in Bear country as well so a twofer.

Osprey aether 70
It’s a backpacking/mountaineering pack. I hike with it a lot and it carries heavy weight very well. Lifetime warranty on everything including bears and fire.

Another option are the pack out bags.
I hunt with a back quiver so I don't want a backpack. I can fold these down to fit in a cargo pocket or haversack. Along with some light weight B.O.M.B meat bags. My brother packed out a whole deer with one trip this way. Really distributes the weight so you can carry a lot like a saddle bag.
Hope to try it out on elk this Sept.
