Title: Some late night froggin
Post by: Hoosierarcher88 on July 15, 2019, 04:14:37 AM
Well was sitting at home and just finished eatin supper when a buddy of ours stopped by to drop off some massive filets from a 42# blue cat he had just caught down on the river by our house. We got to talking and he mentioned the frogs were pretty loud tonight and it hit me that i hadnt been out gigging yet this season. Well needless to say the itch got me good and i had to go out but decided to take my recurve and some mismatched arrows and see how id do with it. I wrapped my headlamp around my hand and about 20 minutes later( dang battery drains way too fast) i had us a nice mess of frog legs to accompany the catfish for our fry this coming thursday. Ive always loved my big long gig pole but after this there is no turning back from taking the recurve out.

Nice haul Justin! I was sound asleep when the fire alarm started chirping indicating a low battery. Got up, disconnected it to change later this morning when reasonable. No sooner gone back to bed when the F. R. O. G alarm 🚨 went off and seen your post.

As Supreme Leader and Captain of F. R. O. G wanted to be first in saying congratulations 🎉.

Thank you. I had 4 or 5 more but unlike usual where i would use a drawstring bag to put them in i only had a styrofoam cooler. Frogs knocked the lid off and it was a mad scramble to catch them to put tem back in. The ones shot with a judo or a broadhead with practice blades dont go anywhere but ther were a few that were thumped on longer shots with a saunders bludgeon that were barely phased. Live and learn, ill stick with the judos next time.

Justin,

Me and the team have experimented with different heads of our design to purchased ones and ultimately we use hexheads, VPA thumpers, or just a field point with a washer behind it.

I prefer the hex or VPA and a frog coldcox by one in the head will stiffen straight out😁

We find it a lot of fun and dare I say even more so than deer hunting 😂

Lots more action!

We try and promote getting your sons, daughters and grandchildren out bow hunting frogs, loads of fun and they get to do a lot of shooting.

That’s a nice haul. Miss frog legs. Years ago we went along the Colorado River near Yuma to hunt big frogs. It was fun but at night it was hard to spot the big Mojave Rattlesnakes that also we’re hunting the frogs.

The frog footage on the Tradgang DVD was the most popular segment of all the hunting clips on the video...

We had a Sponsor once that had some VERY unique heads...he had a GREAT frig head.  Not sure what ever happened to him...he was a cool dude.

John,
I enjoy your Froggin posts and looks like you are shooting the Mesa longbow? I just got one back in June and so far I really like the looks and feel of it.

Well as long as it doesnt rain this evening ill be taking our buddy that brought over the catfish out to get after some more frogs. He has never seen it done with a bow so this should make for an interesting night.

I'm gonna have to make a dawn patrol this week before work. We can't use any artificial illumination to shoot frogs, which means its a daytime activity here in PA.
Terry, the frogging and squirrel hunting are probably my favorite parts of the tradgang DVD!

Justin,

Waiting on the pictures 👍😁
No pictures from last night, just got a few but went for quality instead of quantity. I wasnt a big fan of the big vpa blunts and after 5 or 6 frogs that werent even phased i switched back to the judo points and no more issues.

Wow I’ll just have to give Judos a run but right now all I have is a couple Kondors.?

Justin,

Not sure who makes these heads, was thinking VPA made the “Hammer” but might be wrong.

I’ve used both and both are extremely effective. If forced to choose it would be the “Hammer” in 175 grains.

This is what i was trying. 300 grain vpa. Similar to the thumper but doesnt have the point in the center, it just is cupped shape

Must be so kind of armored frog skin to survived a 300 grain punch with that head!

I’ve used those too and had good success as well.

Just got done cleanin frogs. The wood shaft and an old tusker concord were a deadly combo. Head shot city tonight even a few that i lobbed across the cove. Sadly thats it for my froggin this week as i go back to work for the weekend.

yep only one leg got hit which isnt bad for using a broadhead. I gave up on the blunts as i lost more than i got. Broadhead i didnt lose a single one, it was either a clean miss or a clean kill.

Yep i was a bit nervous at first being a 64" long recurve but i was able to pop off headshots on frogs from both sides of the canoe. Would be a lot easier with a bit shorter bow
