Title: A bow is born
Post by: razorsharptokill on June 29, 2019, 07:38:35 AM
Had one that I roughed out several years ago. It had some bad gouges and a section of violated ring. Got it cleaned up and floor tillered yesterday.

Thats one snaky looking stave!
I really like your drawknife, never seen one with articulating handles.

I heated the handle up and clamped the bow to the bench top in order to get the tips lined up. The string ran
long one edge of the handle now it lays right down the center.

Here it is after some work today. I'm waiting on a digital bow scale so I can continue. I have a game scale but I'm not too confident in it's accuracy.

Watch out for that hingy place about a foot from the fade in the left limb, get out your gizmo and work either side of it.

Yeah I saw that. It is stiff now and needs some reduction. The handle is also a little thin front to back so I scabbed on another piece of Osage there.

cCaused a crack on the corner on one limb tip while recurving it. It is on the belly side. I heated it, put some super glue inside and clamped it. I added a thin veneer over it and one to match on the other limb. Hope it survives.

I should have rounded that corner off some before hand. Lesson learned.

Yup, always round off all edges, before trying to bend the bow.

I think I re-learn this about every fifth bow or so...

I think she is going to make it. I overlayed the crack with a thin veneer after super gluing and clamping it. I worked on the tiller some more today until it got too hot. A couple stiff spots still to work on. It is about 40 lbs @ 18 right now.

I like the tree mounted tillering "wall".  Been trying to figure where to put one and there it is!

Get the outer 2/3 of the left limb bending more but also get the right limb caught up with the left. Try not to pull to full draw until the tiller is corrected...and be sure to exercise plenty as you remove wood.

Well I strung it, put it on the tree and pulled about 10lbs of draw and... CRACK! Better on the tree than at full draw later.

This is the left limb from the above pics. I'm guessing grain run off and probably that section was bending too much. This stave was sawn so the grain was probably violated on the edge. Now its a Titebond III glue experiment. LOL! Oh well, I just grabbed another stave and chased a ring to just past the handle section.

That's a pretty severe grain runoff for a stave. I can understand a board having a runoff like that. Was the stave split out or sawn?

Split originally then saw... before i knew better.

Jim, I hope you burn that thing before you are tempted to mess with it more :campfire:

Yeah, I want to see how the titebond holds when i put it on the tree again. After it breaks I will salvage  some of it for file an knife handles. Very strange that it broke. Should have radiused the corners more I guess.
