Learning the ways things work here in the south. A question, on a WMA if one goes to scout possible hunting spots can you carry a bow and some blunts to stump shoot along the way. I shoot in the back yard daily but miss stumping.......a lot !!!!! Public land close to home is not like up in New York where I'm from. :dunno: Any help will be good, Thanks in advance........ :notworthy:
My lease is in southern Georgia. I can hunt hogs all year long so if you have a Georgia small game license and it is public hunting property, I don't see were you would be in any violation. But our 4 thousand acre lease is private so don't hold me to that statement...tippit

If you are scouting when hunting seasons are closed then you cannot possess a bow and arrow on WMA's in GA. No pig hunting on WMA's except during another open season such as deer or small game.
How about National Forest land ??

All I can say is I now live in Georgia and I like it, but I have been to Alaska and it pretty darn nice......... :dunno: I will just shoot in the back yard and look for a place to hunt.
I have lived in Georgia all my hunting life, and it is not a big hassle regarding hunting rules. However, it does take a little bit of study each year to keep up with the regs. Actually, I didn't know National Forest land is off limits. Seasons and game limits are generous. There is a relatively short time each year that nothing is in season, so you can actually be in the woods most of the year. Ron, my best advice for you is to cultivate a friendship with land owners who will grant access to their property. If they are not archers, you may have to explain what stump shooting is, though.
Nobody said they don't want to hunt Alaska. We just don't want to live there. Two weeks in September is just the right amount of time. Overall Georgia has it going on. Mild winters and lots of hunting and fishing opportunity. Summers are pretty hot though. Ron, how far are you from Fort Stewart? You have to jump through a few hoops but you could stump shoot while you are hunting pigs year round
Been to Ft.Stewart on a hog hunt almost 3+ hours south of me. As far as land owners...... pretty urban around me, may try a WMA about 40 minutes north of me.

If you were to go by hunting badgers pictures he's posted of his kills since he joined in 2005. you might not wanna go to Alaska and hunt.... Hes not a very good representative of Alaska..... He just plays one on the Internet.
Again...thank God I don't live in AK!!!...but I would live to hunt there.
Terry, you're right, you never said that you didn't want to. Just a misreading. And there's a big difference between hunting somewhere for a week or two and living there year round. You are proud of what Georgia has to offer an outdoorsman and you should be. I think its one of the best states in the east for a bowhunter. I miss it. But not in the summer!

Ron, you might look up a fish & game warden (FWC in Florida, not sure what the .org or officers are called in GA) and ask them directly, and have a conversation about what your desire/intent is. You've got more than you bargained for in this thread, and little authoritative information. Best bit of info here is review the rules. They vary by location and will also change on you year to year. I try to always remember rules are often bereft of logic.
It is pretty suburban in and around Buford but there are areas to hunt there, I lived in the Buford/ Sugar Hill area for about 13 years before moving to the other side of the county. There are a lot of deer down near the river, you're just going to have to get out and shake some hands. Also over around the Grayson/Loganville area there are large private tracts. The plus about Gwinnett County is that they have an extended archery only season until January 31st, or at least they did before I moved. Up I-85N in Banks and Jackson Counties are good areas to search for access as well.
You'll find good places, you just moved there and it'll take a little time to make connections.
Going to check out Dawson Forest WMA about 45 minutes north of me. Anybody familiar with it for hunting ???
So nobody hunts Dawson WMA, maybe that's a good thing, lol :biglaugh:
Ron Georgia has a crazy amount of public land to hunt. Many folk lean towards hunting WMA land but remember, you have 750,000 acres of Chattahochie National Forest in North Georgia and 650,000 acres in Oconee National Forest in Central Georgia. If you can make it to the Independence shoot at my house on July 6th, you can get all the info you can handle.

Keefer, I always have an up to date hunting license on me and carry at least one broadhead and if stopped, I'd say I am groundhog hunting. We can hunt them 12 months of the year. I've never been stopped though.
