Title: Riser Handle design
Post by: Wolftrail on May 30, 2019, 07:36:49 PM
I don't know if this has ever come up.   I have been doing this bow building stuff for about 8-9 years and never have I read about where to carve out the throat of the handle in relation to the shelf.  I put my shelf 1 1/4" above center.  Should the deepest part of the handle be at center or just below the shelf, or anywhere in between.  Like where is the best balance anyway.

Try to get the shelf right above the knuckle. Then it it pointing where your finger is if you was pointing.

"Then it it pointing where your finger is"  sorry don't quite get that part..  Can I see some of your Bows so I can get an idea.

I have looked at a few risers,  and noticed that the throat of the handle is about one knuckle below the shelf;  does this sound right.  I found this link it may help still have to finish reading it.   https://buildyourownbow.com/grip-and-shelf-location-on-a-recurve/

You want the arrow close to your hand. With your hand closed and the index finger pointing your arrow should be right on top of your hand.

Oh,  "and the index finger pointing"   whats the purpose of pointing.

I put the deepest part of the throat at center. Then cut shelf in 1” to 1-1/8” above center. With hair rest added, I am 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” above center.
