Title: planning the move
Post by: Angus on April 03, 2008, 07:26:00 PM
Well, gang, it's official; we just bought a house in Leavenworth, WA, and I'll retire within the year   :bigsmyl:
the back fence is national forest; the farmers have been complaining this past winter of the elk coming down and eating the apple trees. Winthrop, north of us, has road signs warning of deer causing accidents, and my new neighbor complains of a large brownish-gray bird with a band on it's tail eating her plants.  How can I help?
Seriously, we'll begin the move this June, and I'll retire either in August, or wait until February if it's worth my economic while to stay that long. Bottom line is, after 35 years of teaching, reading applications to UC Davis, and working the family farm, recess is almost here   :biglaugh:

Soooo...any Tradgangers prowling the woods in the area??

There are a few. Once you get settled in and decide to hunt the Blacktailed deer, check out this website:  www.blacktailcountry.com (http://www.blacktailcountry.com)

There are a lot of hunters not all bow and not all trad. but real good people willing to help new comers to the state.

Leavenworth is a beautiful place and is quick access to a bunch of deer, elk and bear hunting.  Forest grouse are abundant in the high country.

If your into backpacking, there are some great lakes in the backcountry too.

I spent most of my life living and hunting in Washington.  You will be in the center of it living there.

Have fun!!

Mike

thanks all; it's truly a dream!  there's a place that highway 97 runs thru, a little winding meadow with a stream on the south side; it calls loudly whenever I drive by.  This fall, I see myself ghosting through the forest with my bow, being reborn.

Sumpin tells me you're not goin' to Costco for beef anymore.  Congrats on a great milestone.  Looking forward to mine in 23 years.  :(
Hope you have a bamboo fly rod to cover non huntin' season.  Ever fished the Sac or American not too far from Davis?

It's funny you should ask, Quinn-I was a flyfishing guide in Carson-Iceberg for a few years!  Pretty much fished all over CA, and lost my share of elk-hairs!  However, being raised in Winters, you couldn't pay me to live in the Peoples' Republic, but you're right, Deadeye-house prices here...Whoa!!

Congrats back at ya, Joe; Fall's gonna be really something this year, and yard work is HIGHLY overrated!!

I'll check with the local farmers about the elk problem.  It's going to be a tough job, but hey! we're here to help, right guys?

The only thing you might not like is our game laws.  You can only hunt one weapon, per species, per year and only that weapon season.  One deer only.

Angus,

I live in Wenatchee (20 miles from Leavenworth).  This area is full of great scenery and terrain, but great hunting spots can be difficult to find.  With some research and scouting, you'll be able to get into some mulies and elk.

This will be my first year to go after elk with trad gear.  I hear that the hot elk areas are not really too close to Leavenworth.  PM me, and I'll let you in on all I have learned thus far.

Congrats on your house.  Enjoy the move.  We will get in touch when you get here.

Brett

For those of you that haven't been to Leavenworth, the whole town reminds you of a bunch of coocoo-clocks.
