Title: Super Lam's and math, I am lost

Ok, another mathhead question. I got a superlam sled from Kenny, on it he marked where I need to measure the thickness. The he states to add .018" to that measurement to get the butt thickness. Fair enough I believe him, however, the actual measurement doesn't jive. I would simply like to understand the difference.

i.e. I just ground two of them. The measured butt thickness is .100" but according the Kennys instruction, it should be .045"+.018" which gives .064". To me that seems a huge difference.

Hopefully Kenny will answer. But I think I know why.

What you are physically measuring is the taper + power lam. The instructions Kenny gave you are to strictly measure what the tapered lam would be.

So in essence your power lam is adding the additional .036 to the super lam.

That superlam sled, could you draw an exaggerated drawing from the side to show how the tapers go? I cannot quite see it.
I have made what I call my square head compound taper sled, it has a .002 forward taper that goes into a .004 reverse taper, like an integrated tip wedge.
I guess the superlam is different?

My drawing skills are about as good as my math. But I will try to explain, but it sounds the same as what you are saying Bue. A side view of the sled would start thinner, raise to a hump then taper back down. Of course the peak of the hump is off center.

Brad got it , you call it a .064 but the p lam adds more. I think measuring in center and adding the taper is most accurate .

This is one I made a couple of years ago, I slightly rounded off the apex point to make a smoother transition.
I also made one with an .003 taper at the longest section, but that leaves the finished lam a bit thick at the end in order to have some wood left at the apex point.

Yep, that is pretty much it, although I have no clue on the actual measurements and tapers. I just mimic what I see others do.

This is all very technical :o...I'm new to the power lam/Super lam thing but intrigued for sure. Bue in your illustration, is the .002 taper side the butt end of the 36in lamination and the .004 the tip wedge...so of course the prepped lamination would be narrower in the middle to allow bend...Am I seeing that right???

Yes. The idea is to stiffen the tips a bit without using a separate tip wedge.
I made my sleds longer than 36 inches so the thinnest section of the finished lam can be shifted about depending on where you want the thinnest section of the lam to be in the limb. I just like to try out things.
Like I mentioned above I also made one with a .003 taper going into a .004 taper.

At 18 in. you are on the .001 taper part. so just add .018 gets your true butt thickness.
I just would like to see a detail of what you use to make the superlam. I need a longer wedge on the butt end.

   It can be whatever works for your bow...  I think the definition of a Super Lam would be having more than one taper...
