In order to get the motivation where it needs to be, I am offering the following:
One free, green, osage stave to someone who meets the following:
You have made fewer than 10 self bows;
You have a digital camera and know how to post pics or have your own webpage;
You agree to start a selfbow buildalong here on the TradGang in the next 3 months;
You couldn't otherwise acquire osage through cutting, buying, or trading;
The ideal recipient is young (or young at heart), not afraid to make mistakes, relatively poor, and new to selfbows. Having the Traditional Bowyer's Bible Volume 4 is a bonus. I wnat you to test some of the precepts in there. In fact, the ideal candidate is me 10 years ago. I want to relive my youth vicariously through you :)
Put your name in the hat. I'll draw on Sunday night. I'll cover shipping up to $20. If you are somewhere more expensive than that, we'll negotiate something.
Peace,
John
:clapper: Awesome offer John! Please put my name in the hat.I have never built a self-bow but I've done numerous board bows lately(I'll post some pics of my work later today).I fit the bill except I don't have TBB4 yet. Right now I can't afford to buy a stave that's why I'm trying to talk a friend out of a log,they were cut to build a home(it's not osage though).I've been laid-off 4 months now and dealing with some health issues with my wife so this bow building has really helped me cope.Best of luck to the winner! Offers like this are what makes this such a great site!!!
John, can You add my name... I have tried 8 times and only had 2 make it to 150 shots... I do have a digital camera & I know how to post pic's.
You can put my name in the hat!
Thanks,
Dannon
Will do folks.
John that is very generous....DO NOT add me to the list. The good lord knows that I am the king of all procrastinators and would not be able to fulfill my obligation to you and the community. I will however be looking forward to this buildalong
Well done John. Truly the right spirit.
John, What a great offer. I am just finishing my first selfbow. I started with a Gary Davis bow blank.. please don't put my name in as I can afford to buy wood.. I will definitely be watching.. thanks again for you generous offer.. Joe
Thanks John. You know I have been trying to start. This will be the best reason for me to stick it out and make it happen. Add me to the list.
Dan Frein
I'll play! I've made 2 successful board bows, only have access to lumberyard boards for bow woods. I don't have TBB4 yet tho, but got the first 3 :D
Mike
Wow cool offer John, I am in the process of making an ALB of Yew (first bow ever) and its been very enjoyable. DONT ADD ME as I can afford to buy or acquire my own wood just wanted to throw a little encouragement your way and to the lucky recipient.
Many thanks for the great offer! Please throw my name in the hat.
Go for it Woody!
This will be fun to whatch! Whoever may win!
Throw my name in the hat if you will! That would be a fun challenge after lots of fiberglass bows...
Osage doesn't grow around here, but I do have bibles 1,2,3... I certainly am not rich, money wise. Looking forward to another build along, however it turns out! Love them build alongs.
Mike
Great thing you are doing, John. I'm doing OK, (with help from friends - LOL) so don't put me in. I also just wanted to send a Kudo to you and some encouragement to the winner. Osage is so much fun. I have my first one going now - slow but sure - LOL.
Disregard my earlier post. I Want to get a stave sometime soon to try to make a selfbow, but I can afford to buy or trade to get one. Thanks for giving someone a chance like this.
can someone post some of the bows Spec's from TBB #4...
John, I feel I meet all your requirements.
1. I've NEVER made a self-bow, only 3 backed bows.
2. I do have a digi-cam and can post fairly easy.
3.Osage is just about impossible to obtain up here in Canada, in any shape or form!
4. I'd gladly make time to start one...even push aside a couple of bows I wanna try to do it.
Somebody needs to inform me if 3 months is enough to dry this stave....
5. I don't have TBB#4 yet, but I do have the other 3.
6. I'd have to admit that I am pretty tight for funds, especially since I just discovered I need a 1200.00 repair on my car to make it road-worthy.
I'd love to try it, I'll do the best job I can!!....I have promised the next door neighbour a bow! Please consider me for this generous offer....
Thanks
John, my apologies -- please pull my name. I read too fast and missed some of the qualifications. :knothead:
However, if being a bonehead occasionally is a qualification, then I'm a shoe-in! :thumbsup:
Why not put my name in the hat please.
Congrats John, great idea. Will boo backed bows count in your build along too?
I will be building a bow at the balt trad classic May 16-18th with ancestral knowledge. So a nice stave with nice late wood growth rings would be very helpful for a fella like me.
This will be my first bow build.
I have vol 1 and 2 of the bowyers bible. And plan on taking a bunch of pictures. Do I need vol 4?
Hey Guys. You don't NEED any TBB for John's offer or to build a selfbow (although I've read all 4).
Study John's website or this and get with it:

Great offer John!
(Do not put me in the drawing.)
Please add my name, never built a bow before but always wanted to try.
After again looking at the qualifications, I say pull my name if you see a youngster wanting to start. Its a good thing your doin. And awesome website that I spent over an hour looking at last night.
Coaching baseball and other commitments won't allow me to participate, but I'll be watching for sure.
Hats off to you, John!!

can you put my name in the hat as well? I've made 2 self bows, have a digital camera, and cannot get osage at all in WA state...oh, and I agree to all of those terms...and I'm fairly young(16)...
Thanks,
Derek
It's Dan "One Eye" Frein's turn in the barrel. Congrats! I'll take some pics of the stave befpre I send it on its way. Have fun Dan!
Congrats Dan....Make a good 1
HOOOOOORAAAAAAYYYYY!!! I can't wait to get the stave and get started. I will try to make you guys proud.
