Would like to hear if anybody uses the razorheads & what you think of them.
Thats all I use......Love em..bowdoc
Best head ever made!!!!! I recently bought some Magnus heads because they are similar in design and I really like them too. I just bought a dozen "greenheads" (old bear razorheads) on the big auction site, so I'll be going back to them.
Someone is selling some kind of razorblade looking thing they call the Fred Bear Razorhead. They insinuate it has taken more game than any other head. NO!!!!! The real bear razorhead has, not this thing.
Sorry to go on and on. Bear razorheads....you can't go wrong.
I've used both the old green ones and the SS ones in the past. I think the old green ones were harder and stronger than the SS ones, but also harder to sharpen. The SS ones were much easier for me to get razor sharp but I have had the curl on the tip when hitting bone and had one bend at a 90 degree angle right at the end of the ferrule on a miss. But I've taken a number of deer with both kinds. Good heads overall. And I always used the bleeder blades with them and had good blood trails. A proven broadhead design.

I agree. I couldn't remember what the first upgrade to the greenheads were called. If you use the greenheads take a file and file off the tip to a chisel point. That will solve the curling problem.
I have about 3 dozen of the old green ones that belonged to my good friend Lew,who passed away a few years ago.
I love them, and by using them I'm able to bring my "departed" friend hunting with me.
Bow Doc, you ever use or want to use Bear Super Razorhead S/S with insert.
Let me know.
Jon
I have some old greenies that were my Dad's. I also have some "new" 145 grain SS razorheads I plan to use one or the other one of these years to get a deer...
Been using them for almost forty years and have never really felt the need to change though I have used Swickeys and Snuffers from time to time and like them as well. The do a great job if you do your's. Grant
Over forty years here. Nothing flys better and nothing kills any quicker. Bonus: they can be made shaving sharp with a mill file.
Hi Jon,nope I have always used the 1963 type with bleeder blades.I file sharpen em and love the carbon steel model.I do think they may be a bit stronger then the SS also...They are great broadheads....bowdoc
Thanks much for all your input & info. Looks like the razorhead will be on the top of my list.
here's a few different Bear broadheads,bowdoc (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/h001.jpg)
I like them. Easy to sharpen and always fly well.
Bowdoc, tell us more about that dark grey head that is in your picture at 1 0'clock.
When were they issued?
Is there any of the 145gr SS still around for sale?
Heard recently that the Bear Razorhead is no longer being made by Bear Archery. Seems that division was sold to another company. Look before you buy. I switched to Magnus a few years ago and have been very happy with their product. The older, green Bear Razorhead was my head of choice until I could no longer find them.
This is what is currently being billed as the Fred Bear Razorhead. It is definitely an updated version, not the tried and true head we all remember.

I've used them as 2-blades w/o bleeders for many years. Never a problem.
I have used the new ones Snakeeater mentions. They are also worth it. Comparable to the SSs in strength and ease of sharpening.
Black Hawk, I think those are from the late 70's or early 80's. That's when I used to buy them new anyway. My archery store had a huge supply, loose in a bucket for a buck a piece! I still have one or two around here. I made my first bow and arrow kill ever with one of those.
I'm sure Bowdoc will know the story on them. They might of been the forerunner to the stainless Super Razorhead, the ones I bought had inserts installed but they could be taken out with some heat.
I think that was about 1981-1982-ish somewhere in there. It's Stainless Steel.Came with factory chisiel tip, same as that screw in super razorhead...I just had a couple in my broadhead box as I really never used them much. Some of the guy's really like that SS model...bowdoc
What would you give for a bucket of those today????
That's the only broadhead I use. And I use the bleeder blade. Makes an awesome blood trail!
How do you guys use the bleeder blades with woodies?
I have two major problems with these heads. 1st problem I,m about out, 2nd problem is there just not purty, but actually the 2nd problem is a blessing because people get rid of them because of it. There GRRRRRRREAT.
coconutdave....When you point taper the arrow, leave the taper just short of the slot, or just into it. That will let room to seat the inserts.
Bear made a tool that enabled you to slot a wood arrow for the insert after the head was mounted on a full length tapered shaft. They were the cleaning tool with saw teeth on one side. They are hard to find these days but you can cut one end off of a hack saw blade so it threads through the slot in the broadhead which works just as well.
Problem I always have with using short tapers with broadheads is that the head tends to shift with repeated shooting getting it out of alignment. The longer the taper you can use the less chance of the head getting out of true.
Thanks guys. I've tried the short taper, but I was concerned about it not being strong enough. The hacksaw trick might be worth a try.
