I have never hunted anything with a stickbow yet.I am very into shooting it but.Still very nervous on the concept of hunting with a 40Lb recurve.Im use to using 70lb compound. Is there any advice or words to share.

Yep, sharpen your broadheads and have a blast! Be sure to post pics of all your dead critters

Yup, go for it.
Nothing wrong with a 40 # bow for hunting.

Get as close as you need to be to guarantee a good hit. Getting close also helps to avoid too many things happening while the arrow is in the air, with the relatively slow speeds of trad bows. Wait until the animal is calm, hopefully with head down eating, before you shoot. Approach hunting with the trad bow with the attitude that you’ll walk away from anything that isn't a reasonable shot.

I plan on keep a strict 15 yd max yardage. COC Broadheads no fancy shots just quarting away or broadside.Thank you for your encouragement.

I made the switch from compound last winter. I had a good friend, my neighbor help me get my bow set up and offer a ton of helpful tips. I honestly shot everyday leading up to archery season and was very consistent out to my max range of 20 yards. I used a scary sharp broadhead and was lucky enough to kill a 10 point at about 12 yards on Sept. 29th. My best advice to give you would be practice with good form, shoot with guys who know how to shoot in case you are having any issues, use a sharp broadhead and know YOUR limitations with your bow. You already know how to hunt em and most of all HAVE FUN. Good luck!

The only thing I would add is to be as confident and comfortable with your 40# bow as you were with your 70# compound. Or, as we sometimes say in Georgia, "Don't worry. Every thing's gonna be all right".

Archery 101. SHARP broadheads, Arrows flying dead straight, 9 grains per pound. Get close and put the arrow through the heart/lung area. Dont take stupid shots.

Friend,
I have a different take on your question. About 40 years ago I got myself a compound and I bowhunted with that compound set-up at 67 lb. I took six bucks in six years. It then occurred to me that I had not taken a shot at more than 18 yards. So why was I hunting with a contraption that looked like a cross between a TV antenna and a medieval torture device?
I hung that bow on the wall and went back to "trad". I had been shooting high 50's before slipping over to the dark side. Not knowing any better I got myself a 65 lb. recurve. It took a little work but I trained-up to that bow. The only time I haven't gotten a buck is the years (and there have been way too many, that I did not have the time in the woods due to work commitments.
Now, at 70, I am shooting a 64 lb. recurve. I can hit a 6 inch a paper plate 5 out of 5 shots with cedar arrows and feather fletch. I just refuse to buy the "conventional wisdom" that you have to go light when you go trad. It's all a matter of training. If all you want to hunt can be ethically taken with light equipment then go for it. But don't talk yourself into the idea that you can't do anything. You can if you put your mind and soul into it.

There's a thread out that is all 40's harvests. ... I would throw the link in, but I'm not smart enough to know how to include it.....

Don't worry about the 40 lb bow. Just make sure your arrows are properly tuned and your broadheads are sharp. Know your limitations and you are good to go. Have fun! :archer2:
