Title: Some points I made...One has GOLD!!
Post by: onemississipp on April 02, 2008, 03:34:00 PM
I have not been knapping very long, I started, got frustrated then started reading some books and started again, things became more clear. I have been knapping on and off for less than a year. Here are a few points I was able to make sitting in a hotel in Dallas, back in January. No real style of point tried for, I just let the stone be what it wanted.

As you can see the point on the right has something in it. I have no idea what it might be, the Black and Tan stone as I call it came from AL, it may be Gold!!!

Other flakes I removed had small pieces in it also. Looks kinda like solder, but can not be scraped out with finger nail.

I'll ask my Pop what the stones are, he's a rock hound.

Looks like Fort Payne chert.  Can be excellent knapping stone.  Pyrite shows up in it occasionally.  Great work, onemississip!  I've ticked off my share of cleaning ladies, too, by chipping in hotel rooms.        :)

My Pop states it looks like chert and the gold fleck is maybe mica.

I was thinking the same thing as knife river, The Fort Payne belt runs right through the area, along with iron ore.

JDinPA I'll have to look up mica!

Thanks guys.
