Here is a bow I put together of maple on the cheap this winter. Gave it a ghostly paint job for camo .. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190209/86268068dcc99ddf631a911997d396d8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190209/f50e5d030789a44533d1555704bde04f.jpg)

I like it!!! I notice a hint of a hump about mid limb at brace, is that a product of the power lam?
-
Pretty snazzy..
-
FHLBB :bigsmyl:
-
Yep the midlimb hump is from the superlam bending a little more in center.
What’s a FHLBB? LOL
58” to fit in blind if I decide to do that, 48@28,10 strand BCYX padded in all the right places .
My GT500s are almost too weak but I have some 400s

Sweet!! :notworthy:
-
Nice one Kenny did you clock that little guy ? FHLBB ? :dunno:
-
Not checked yet but it's fairly quick. Maybe Mike was excited and stuttertted... :biglaugh:
-
You always make skinny strings like that?
-
No but they are quieter.
-
Nice!
-
That's pretty slick. I'm thinking about an all black but I want it glossy!
Don't have to worry about fitting the bow in the blind cause I don't fit. :)
-
Purty Nice Kenny... Looks like she could be quick by the way she's bending...
-
DUH Forward Handle Long Bow BLACK :bigsmyl: Geesh
-
Who's going to be the first to make a FHLBP ? :bigsmyl:

Hey, it's your idea. :) Run with it!
-
Did I mention it’s a two pc? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190210/a0b0af460faa1a9012746d2145023999.jpg)

Crooked sticky will:)
-
Sweat wasn't expecting that ,how's it feel the same as the 1 peace ? Very cool
-
Yep exactly same, I’ll do a thing or two diff on next one but learned some stuff
-
Shweeeet.!!! Did you use a stringer (I beam)??? I have some old unfinshed bows and was thinking of making a 2pc out of one of them but they don't have a stringer... Taking so much wood off without a stringer kinda scares me...
-
Yep 1/4” phenolic back to belly thru site window.
Also wrapped handle with auto body glass cloth. Not sure that’s an approved material but seems good so far ...
Just didn’t wanna order a bunch of stuff
-
Kenny you sneaky devil you. That looks good. The auto resin may set quicker but just s strong probably. And most guys put carbon tape in there 1 layer after the first wrap of glass.
Yeah make Roy a FHLBP could be a two piece nen he gots parts to play with
-
Purty slick there Kenny
-
Yep, be sure to put the black layer in. I got pretty thin on the bottom edge of the glass wrap because I didn't. Thought I had the grip as wanted but took it a little deep on bow back. It works fine but looks weak. The pressure there is on the top of the socket so it is good. But bothers me that I did it!! LOL
-
Oh, I don't like doing leather wraps so I masked it off and sprayed the grip with bedliner…
-
You don't need carbon fiber... Glass is plenty strong as long as you wrap it good enough... I would think as long as you have a heavy 3/16" and thicker wrap on there you should be good to go...
-
The only thing I woulda had the black for was to tell when I was shaping deep enuff!!
-
And I agree the glass is plenty stout, I may dye the resin on a layer on next one
-
Carbon gives me piece of mind. I try never to under build. Yeah I did on with bed liner. You can get the thin rubber sleeves from Black Widow. Or bicycle inner tubes.
-
:notworthy: :notworthy:
really like that one
GREAT JOB !!
-

It will kinda work... It will just kinda mix and fade in with the resin that is already on there and the next layer or two that you are gonna put on... It will sorta work but will be vague... The only way that will work well is if you let the wraps on there harden then wrap it with pigmented resin and let that harden and then do your final wraps...
Just take a thin strip of colored cotton fabric and wrap it around the grip one one layer thick...
-
No... Don't do that... It will just kinda mix and fade in with the resin that is already on there and the next layer or two that you are gonna put on... It will sorta work but will be vague... That would work!
-
Kenny... I changed my post a little...
-
Where did you get all your TD socket sleeve supplies from?
-
I just used fender repair glass fabric and resin from wallyworld on this one. :biglaugh:
-
What about the release agent??
-
Big Jim has it.
https://www.fibreglast.com/product/Woven_Fiberglass_Tape_217/Fiberglass_Fabric
Release agent 3-4 coats of Johnsons paste wax after you seal the tenon with several coats of CA glue. I have found if you get a good tight fit putting on finish after may get the tenon too tight.
-
Ya shoulda used black magic patch repair:)
-
Nice work Kenny. That looks slick.
There's an article in Primitive Archer which shows how to make a takedown with automotive glass fabric like you used and standard 2 ton epoxy. They recommend 1/8" thick wrap for 50 lbs and below and 3/16" thick above 50 lbs.
This is with wood selfbows so I'd imagine what most of the fiberglass guys are doing with carbon and ibeams is overbuilding. But that's a good thing with bows. Just food for thought.
-
Ben could you shoot me a link to that article or post if you get a chance ?
-
This post is based on the published article....

Here's another one with the same idea....

Thank you sir

For release agent I used a NEW wax ring for release agent . Put it on kinda thick so have just a little play in the socket . But works fine. Just one of the things I’d do differently . Was scared it would be a one piece again so went a bit heavy on wax !
-
I did mike the tenon to make sure the end was slightly smaller than the base ...
-
A mistake I made on one of mine was to spray lacquer finish on the tenon . Even though I had paste wax on there the lacquer kinda melted and balled up.I did get it apart but was a pain. a little loose dont hurt when strung but tight is more acceptable.
-
Looks good Kenny! Turkeys won't see that black inside a blind. Do you think 58' is short enough for blind shooting? I built and 2 piece longbow a while ago and used the two ton epoxy and 1" glass wrap I got from Big Jim, it worked great but the two epoxy ended up being expensive, I think I used four tubes, it doesn't go very far. The riser was solid walnut and even though it was a dry piece of wood it shrunk a little after I build it so the socket loosen a little. It still shot well but when i build another Im definitely going to put a glass or G1o I beam in it! I think it will keep the socket tighter also.
-
Ken,
I made it black then feathered some gray on it so if I hunt with ghillie the black wont shine out in the timber.
The cloth and resin wasn't bad price bought locally , and seems plenty stout. Have to buy another pack of cloth if I do another sometime, but have plenty of resin. Stinks to high heaven tho, shop smelled for two days. I would advise doing it outdoors if at all possible!!

Yupper, that's where I do it:)
-
The epoxy you get like west systems (kinda like really thin Smooth on) hardly has a smell to it. I am betting the Auto stuff sets up pretty quick.
-
It seemed to have plenty of working time, but then I had everything laid out and ready to roll...
It will take the camo pattern right off yer new muck boots tho...
-
Yeah it is a messy deal for sure. Gonna drip no matter what. I am thinking of doing one to my Hyper Stic forward handle bow. I like keepin the tenon .750 to .800 wide. With G10 .120 Ibeam just wonder how narrow front to belly you could go?
-
Don’t know that Mike, I’m a first timer on 2pc bows !
Did a bit of testing in shop this wintry mix morn
Turkey med bow

This was with string silencers, ready to hunt/

:notworthy: that’ll do Kenny, that’ll do
-
Kenny, what did you learn
-
On the chrono, nothing really.
On the build, I learned to make a jig to cut it on the table saw, and a jig to hold the bow lined up while wrapping.
Don't use too much release agent, just enough.
It came apart well, I used toothpicks to keep the holes lined up, a whack with a hammer to a block clamped to the bow and it was loose.
The auto body glass ckoth worked fine (so far) I don't forsee any problems with it.
Put something with color (cotton cloth was reccomended) in the wrap after you have about 2/3 of the wrap on there so you don't get too deep. I got lucky on that one...
Make one, they are cool!
-
That’s sure is a pretty slick looking stick.
-
Thanks Mike!! I didn't get too slicked up with it cause it was an experiment. Good thing it's flat black!! :biglaugh:
-
I guess it’s just cosmetic, but what do you do with the toothpicks after you break them? Are they visible?
-
They are under the handle wrap, but you can see the holes and fill with glue or I did...
-
The last one I done had no toothpicks just eye ball it real good when putting it in the jig.
-
I wondered, my jig holds in line both ways.
-
I saw one done with fiber fix repair wrap once. Seems like it would be a lot less messy.
-
So you glass bow guys use toothpicks to hold em together?
  :bigsmyl:
-
Well you got to temper them first :biglaugh:
-
Do ya gots to put that wood hardener on em to make them stiffer?
I understand some older bowyers do that..
-
Yeah they last a long time with the hardener :bigsmyl:
-
Kenny how thick was your G10 in the handle??
-
It is 1/4 phenolic
-
Ok thanks
