Post by: bsv on February 07, 2019, 07:12:41 AM
I am going to dye some new poc.shafts my question is,if I use water with the dye, then shellac will it turn my color amber,is there another sealer before the top coat that will be clear to show the color better? should I use alcohol with the dye? thanks Burt

Water soluble dye will raise the grain.

Use the alcohol soluble dye.

I seal with gasket lacquer.

Shellac isn't the best sealer for arrows, it's too brittle and will rub off easily. Water based poly works well, dries clear and doesn't have a heavy chemical smell.
Alcohol, like Roy said is the way to go.

Yes gasket lacquer is top coat with a dip tube, 4 coats.

It is smelly stuff to apply though.

Water based poly works well also like Pat said.

I thought I would have to use shellac to seal so the water base poly won't react with the water mixed dye

I buy aniline dye online, they sell either water based or alcohol based dye.

I don't know if there is a dye that can be mixed with either.

Shellac is not waterproof.

You can use water base paint and cut it with water. It works like a stain and you can get any color. 3-4 coats of water poly and it looks great and a very good job.

Shellac is one of the poorest sealants as far as water protection goes. Gun stocks were never sealed with it outside of some Soviet bloc stocks.

If you already have the dye contact the manufacturer and ask them about using it with alcohol. Another option is Rit dye and alcohol. Lots of colors to choose from.

what I meant shellac was kind of a barrier from water base dye and water base poly, as any top coat will stick to shellac, water base poly will blend with the water base dye and shellac won't

I used water based poly and found out it wasn't very water proof. I use Zarr marine grade poly in semi gloss it dries in two hours and get like glass . For stain I use a water based dye from Klingsporr its a powder you mix and I mix it way stronger than they recommend I got beautiful colors for my cap dip and they don't have that painted look .

I can’t remember where, but there was an article written about some study of gasket lacquer and it’s a nice finish but not necessary by itself, as it doesn’t seal well.  Water based or oil based poly when dipped and hang dried works well and seals for sure. I usually use either leather dye with denatured alcohol or usually trans tint with denatured alcohol to color shafts, or even veneers for that matter. There’s a finish poly fin my buddy uses and it’s awesome, but the stuff is hard to get I guess. No target burn.

The best clear coat I know of is Daly's Profin. It is expensive and depending on where you are in the country also expensive to ship. But worth every penny.
