Title: Best broadhead sharpener?
Post by: Jaz on April 01, 2008, 07:04:00 PM
I want to finally get my broadheads "hair-popping" sharp. What gets your vote: KME, X-Block or one of the file/hone kits in Three Rivers? Can you sharpen a broadhead with the KME while it's on an arrow?
Thanks,
Eric

Another vote for KME.  I doubt you could/would sharpen your mounted heads.  Look at the video on Ron's page.

I ordered a KME broadhead sharpener kit today.  Can't wait to try it out.

I have a KME and love it.  You could a two blade head but not a 4 blade.

I havent used the KME but have had great results using the Spyderco 204MF.

Probably the most versatile sharpener on the market for the money.

File & Leather Strap. I start out with a mill file, and then work through from Coarse to Medium and finally Fine Arkansas stone.

Ray and Steve are right. It may take you a time or two to get the hang of it, but file then strop. Even when I use a Lansky to get the 25 degree angle on my grizzleys I always finish with file and strop.

Lansky diamond hone system, work your way throught he hones, course, medium, fine, then I have a ceramic, then strop.. No sharper can it be done. Time consuming, but, I know that they are sharp. 22 or 25 degrees on the angle.

It is the set angle that I need.  I'm just not able to "wing it" with a file.  Some can, I can't.

That is why I like fixed systems.  I own a Lansky that I have been using for years on my knife blades, but I really like the KME for my 2-blade heads.

File and steel.

Take a look at Razoredge Systems - good information on sharpening knives, broadheads, etc. The key is to get the slight burr and work from there.  On broadheads, and I use Simmons 190 gr Interceptors, I just use a file and the steel. Have had nothing but passthroughs on deer and a hugh hole left.

Another vote for the KME systems.  I have both the broadhead sharpener and the knife sharpener.   Both work great.  With Ron's help (Owner of KME), I recently figured out how to get 160 grizzlies hair popping sharp with the knife sharpener.  I also saw a video where a gentleman is sharpening snuffers with the knife sharpener (elknut.com).  Very versatile and extremely well made.  The knife sharpener has some really nice improvements over similar type sharpeners, like the lansky systems (IMHO).

For 2 blade heads like Grizleys, Magnus I start out with a bastard file and finish it off with a KME sharpner. Hands down the KME is the best sharpner I've ever used.

Lanski to get it going and then I strop using Yellowstone Strop Compound on the back side of a piece of scrap leather.

Could not be easier and it will be very scary sharp.
