Title: "Spring" turkey season???
Post by: centaur on April 01, 2008, 09:06:00 AM
Well, it opened this morning, and I got up to 8 degrees and 3 inches of snow. If it wasn't for global warming, things might really be nippy! Anyhow, I am waiting til mid morning to go out and freeze my butt looking for Mr. Tom. Anybody having good weather?

Turned out to be a really nice day, although the turkeys didn't cooperate. I had a 30 minute conversation with a gobbler, but he had about 15 hens with him and wasn't going to leave them. I also saw around 100 or so deer. Here is what April 1st looks like this year in northern Wyoming.

Man weather can be a butt kicker eh? It was nearly 70 degrees here this morning and by the time I heard a gobble, I was sweating from the walk. Sat down in an ant bed and heard some misquitoes buzzing. Nearly ruined my hunt......

Same here Brian....Ours opens April 26th.  A lot of the hens may be nesting by then and the gobblers lookin' for love 8^).  I've got my bow warmed up and dulled down; going to use the Tri-State Jaguar since it's the shortest one I have.

Centaur et al---I guess I could gloat about our nicer weather now, but come August/September you all will be laughing at me!     :o

I missed opener, during which my brother chased multiple birds, missed a gobbler and finally took a jake.
Last Thursday I went with him to the same area.  I walked about 7 miles, and only saw one hen and old sign.  Those birds have 200+ square miles to roam, and they seem to be doing it.

Yesterday we went to a different area.  The temps had dropped 20 degees (27 at dawn,  and yes we are cold weather wimps)  , and we only found old sign.
Now back to work tonight.   :banghead:

Our opener is 4/21...and I'm ready!

Nice bow too Pat, keep after'em!!   :D

One of the buildings I oversee we had a nice tom, see his reflection in the cafeteria (how ironic) windows and he decided he was gonna give that "other" longbeard a beatin...he flew through (2) 1/4" panes of glass and was still kickin!!!

The coyotes got a good meal as the DNR won't let anyone take the bird...trust me I was eyeing the wings for fletchings!

Hey Drew,
I need a dumb one like that! See if you can shoo a few of his equally intelligent brothers out to Wyoming for me.  :biglaugh:

We could swap turkeys! But they tend to get smart real fast opening day after the first arrow is launched or the first scattergun blast.

I've always "heard" that Eastern Turkeys are the smarter of the species, but what's going on here lately makes me wonder.

Drew -- Best damn pics and story I've seen here ever! Reminds me of when I was a teenager in Oklahoma in the 1960s ... took me another 15 years to recover. Dumber than any turkey, your average healthy young red-bloodied (sic) human-species male. Murphy's Law says "You will never have a camera handy when the best picture opportunities appear." Man, did you ever beat the odds. The best ending for this story is that this young male who died for love should in fact end up on the cafeteria's menu. Snowing hard here, a foot or more forecast by tomorrow at this altitude (8,000'), with turkey opener this weekend. Excellent! Keeps all the pretenders in bed at home, and out of our way. dave

A shame, looks like he was tenderized.
