This is not a joke. We shot a recurve bow thru the chronograph this evening. This is the speed we registered. This was a traditional bow, not a compound!

What arrow and draw weight?
55 lbs, Gold Tip 5575, about 460 grains.
What bow? THat is wicked fast. Draw length?
Wow. what kind of bow is it?
The first shot registered 331! The picture shows the second shot.
I used to work with those FPS thingys and they would sometimes give ya a funny reading,, How many shots were like that and where were you putting the arrow through, Usually you have to take an average,,
tats crazy
The bait has been placed in the trap,... the trap is sprung.................. :scared:
It not even midnight,, and I'm not falling for it,,LOL,,
Hey I did some cronoing myself today.Check out the results.

Outdoor chrono'ing can be goofy.
Must of shot through it backwards....lol
Must be Belcher!!!
LOL, a couple years ago I posted on another site speeds of 205 foot per second. I was new to the chronograph and had no Idea what was going on.For sure the chronograph was off, or I did something wrong.
What did you shoot the bow out of, a cannon?
My bow will do that easy, but ya gotta add 2 shots together!!LOL
OK OK!!! I know We have a lack of oxygen over here in colorado, BUT!! I know it aint April YET!!
April fools in march
The bow was shot by Randy Clark.
are you sure thats not a scale?? lol!!!
Wow, can you get him to do that again. I'm not going to be like some of the others and bust Your chops, but anything that works off of AC or DC voltage can mess up at times outside.
com'on.......
the arrow was released then Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked it through the chronograph.

:biglaugh:
seeing that most high speed cam bows wont shoot that speed wouldnt it be common logic to assume the chorn. was broke or needed a battery change? i can assure you that no stickbow shoots that speed
I had one shoot 387 once.....and 388...and 386....
Then after deleting the string 47, 47, 48....
Then I changed the battery and I got the 185-186.
Terry Green right on its the battery
I shot a 650 grain arrow at 236,and 238 from my 49# bow. Put in a fresh battery and it was back to 'normal'.
Great numbers, but take it for what it's worth and then replace the battery and move the chronograph where there are no shadows.
I'm with Vermonster they must have shot one of there new recurves out of a cannon. I think with smokeless powder 330+fps is totally doable. What kind of a backstop do you guys use when your shooting the recurve through the chronograph? Next time your testing please video it as I'd like to see that.
One more vote here for the battery! Had identical results 6-8 weeks ago with a straight longbow and woodies...
me think it's a set up for April's Fools!
bull shrimp.........bowdoc
Dang!! Just think how fast it would be if he shot the arrow through instead of the bow.
Mike
I agree with the Chuck Norris theory. I don't think he kicked it though. Chuck just stared the chrono down till it give him the numbers he wanted!
Wonder how fast it shot on say March 31st or April 2nd :D
Either it's Aprils fools or a DAS :bigsmyl:
Irish.....it WAS shot yesterday on the 31st.
Wonder how fast it will be today!!!
Thems is metric numbers :knothead:
I would like to be the first to commit to buying one, I have a money order made out to:
Sipsey River... :readit:
So whats the story here already? Aprils Fool joke?
Just throwing this out there-
120# draw weight shooting 460 grain arrow-
330 fps is possible??? :scared:
Was throwing numbers at a speed calculator site- for compounds- not sure if it would translate to a recurve.
OR- APRILS FOOLS>>>>>
Maybe, if the bow was fired through the chrony out of a cannon!
Not bad....you've broken the speed of sound if your chrono is reading in meters/sec.
The Ghost of the dark archer lives!!!!! :wavey:
That's nuttin!
My bow shoots twice that fast and can beat up that bows dad. Take that!!
Was the arrow shaft a McDonalds straw and a bottle rocket nock? :biglaugh:
I've heard that every year on one particular day, when everything in the heavens and earth align just right, speeds like that can actually be achieved.
I have it under authority that this shot was not taken at AREA 51 , as most of you thought. It was taken at the sound stage where they shot the movie, Capricorn One. As we all know this was the Documentary about the Apollo Moon Landings. Did I say Moon Landings ? If nothing else, it will be the center of Conspiracy Theory for years to come, "did you hear about the 330+fps arrow shot from a Recurve back in 08"....Really, it figures, I always knew there was more than One Bow. Tu Compadres, Suty
I was once getting readings where the back skyscreen was picking up the fletching and the front one was picking up the tip. This was on an Oehler 33 where the skyscreens were separate. I thought something was wrong because the speeds were way high. Gary
And now.........the rest of the story
The bow was a DAS Master.
The chrono did actually read those speeds on the first 2 shots.
But, all of the other test shots read between 205-210.
So, I guess the 331 and 334 were just bad readings.
But the first post was all true!
Enjoyed you responses.

That explained a lot to me..... :D
Chad
I don't know about anyone else, but usually one shooting trad and compound equipment a while knows the difference between a 200fps arrow and one over 300fps.
i had a balistik that was as fast :D
Back in the early 1980's compounds weren't nearly as fast as they are now. I was at the Anderson Archery Clinic, I had a booth there showing traditional archery stuff. They had a chronograph set up and there was a long line of wheel bows waiting to check their speed. I grabbed my longbow and a couple of my heavy cedars and got in the line. Back then longbows were still a novelty and you didn't see them around much at the bigger events so I was getting a lot of curious looks.
The average speed they were getting with the compounds that day were not much over 200-225 fps as I recall. They were all shooting long heavy aluminum arrows, no carbons or overdraws back then.
When it was my turn I shot my two shots through at an average of 220fps. A murmur when through the crowd as someone called out the speed of the lowly longbow. I took my arrows and started back to my booth when someone said, "Sir...what weight is your bow?" I ignored it at first and kept walking. He repeated it louder this time, "SIR...WHAT WEIGHT IS THAT BOW?" I said, "104 pounds" everyone laughed..thinking no wonder. I wish I thought quick enough to answer back that it was 55#. :biglaugh:
Roger Combes from Bow And Arrow Magazine snapped this picture that day when I shot through the crono, and it was later in the magazine.

 :saywhat:
I'm still laughing at those numbers.... From working in a compound shop 3 yrs, I know chronos can give "false" readings every now and then. Even if they have been recalibrated, new batteries, indoor lighting etc, you still get that occasional super high read out.
Don't let any of the major Compound companies see those readings...they'll have those engineers scrambling around redesigning those single cam machines!
John does love to have fun and form the response everyone else does too.
The actual reading of 205-210 with a 208 average was with a DAS 21" Elite with Winex limbs. The bow is 51# at my 28.5 draw and the arrows weigh 355 grains or 6.96 gpp.It is my target and 3D bow.
Happy April Fools day everyone
Randy
Hey Randy, my new DAS is shooting so fast with the 47lb limbs that I have to put water on my feathers before each shot just to keep'em from catching on fire! :biglaugh:
I have also seen high numbers if you pluck the string real bad when shooting through a chrono.
the pickup he shot from was traveling 255fps at the time..... :bigsmyl:
Yet another good example of why not to shoot through a chronograph. . . .
OK John...I am gonna be at your booth on Saturday in Kentucky and I want to see that bow, LOL
Bow50: It won't be there. It only existed on April first...I plan to be at the Klassic. I'll be the guy with the blue cast on his arm, carrying a blowgun.
