I’m normally a hybrid longbow guy but lately I’ve had the itch to give one of Steve Turay’s bows a try. I’m torn between the Baraga, the Whisper and the Sprague. If you’ve got one I’d love to see pics and hear about it.
-
I had a NM Shelton I would dearly love to get back, 53 28- 68" long an absolute pleasure to shoot!
-
I've recently acquired a Classic and a Ramer. Both are great shooters but the Ramer has a slight edge.
-
1/4 Away. I am going to enjoy this post. Never shot a Northern Mist but called Steve and talked to him and I ended up ordering an American model longbow. Now the 5-6 month wait begins.
-
Fred, I am hoping my Sprague will come tomorrow. I will put up some pics and my first impression.
-
That's gonna be a tough choice.Especially with so many models to choose from.
I have had 4 N.M bows.
I really like the Ramer with its string follow limb and reverse handle.Very easy to shoot IMO and extremely quiet design.Mine has the locator grip.
-
Fred,
I have a friend who has 4 or had 4 and I think they are the "Classic" design. I can say they are built very well from what I have seen and Steve is a great guy . He has been up to the Baltimore Bowman classic and we always pay him a visit when there. Another friend I know just picked his up last spring from Steve up there. If classic is what you like I would go with that one but all his bows are nice from the ones I have seen.

Ramer with Walnut laminations and quilted maple handle
-
Ray..That walnut Ramer is just gorgeous!! Is the core walnut too?
-
Steelhead, You’re right about it being a tough choice. I exchanged a couple of emails with Steve yesterday. He said that the Baraga is closer to the type of bow I’m use to but those reverse handle bows really catch my eye. Steve said I could go with a 64” Whisper or Sprague although he would recommend a 66”. My only concern is hunting out of a tree stand with something that long since 62” is the longest I’ve hunted with and 60” being my go to length.

Stickbender, what’s your favorite one???
-
Ray, I love them all but I tend to lean to the Ramer, that being said I have been shooting my Superior of late. I am really looking forward to my Classic, and trying out a Sprauge next week.

Thanks for all the pics guys.
Anyone have any experience with Steve’s Huron? I believe it was a flatbow that he use to make.
-
My Whisper. 51#@28. 66". It's called the Whisper for a reason. Deadly quiet. Just ask the deer on the left. Michigan's U.P. Where this bow was built by Steve.
-
Hey Fred. I saw you might be concerned about longer bow from treestand. It has never been an issue for me. I always make sure there are no branches that could interfere with bow limb clearance.
-
Can’t post pics apparently
-
When I talked to Steve and ordered the American he recommended the 68” for my 28.5” draw. I am a little concerned about that length. For those of you with knowledge about the American can I get away with 66”?
-
AZ, perhaps look at the new Sprague. Similar reflex in limbs but forward handles usually allows you to shorten bow.
-
AZ, This is what Steve wrote when I asked him about my 28” draw length....
At 28" you can go either way. Personally, I like longer bows but that's me. You can generally go shorter with a reverse handle because the limbs are closer to you when you draw. With a standard handle design, the limbs can be up to an 1 1/2" away from the palm of your hand. With a reverse handle the limbs are in the palm of your hand. All things being equal, you don't stress the limbs as much with a reverse handle. So to compensate for that, I suggest you go 2" shorter. In a standard handle design I would build you a 66-68", so in the Whisper or Sprague I'd go 64-66". Again, if I was building one for myself I'd go 66". I just like longer bows.
When you think about it, the difference is one inch on each end of the bow.
I hope this helps.
-
Craig, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Sprague. I’m getting close to putting in my order as I’ve narrowed my decision down to a Sprague or a Whisper.
-
I had the Huron. It was a nice bow.I like the G.N Bushbow a tad more.I also had his Kodiak 59er replica that was a gorgous bow and shot well.No longer made.
-
Fred,That’s it I’m sending you a bottle of Itch relief powder and a scratching stick!😬
-
Keefer, You know how it is.... :biglaugh:

hung up in the mail ! Best things come to those that wait.

I have owned a whisper, shelton and Baraga...I can say this...Steve builds a wonderful bow. Both in shootability and in quality craftsmanship. All 3 of the bows I've owned were top shelf bows. I'd still be shooting one had I not started building bows myself.
-
When in doubt go longer. I’d agree with Steve. You wouldn’t notice the length hunting, only shooting feel. I got rid of all my 66” longbows and replaced with 68” at one point. That’s how dramatic I felt the little difference was..

Same here...I keep a few of Steve’s because I got them before I started building and figured mine out to look (and shoot) as good before I was happy..I’ve killed many deer with his bows.

My Ramer is an amazing hunting tool. I love it.

Well as luck would have it things can change overnight. I had made up my mind last night that I was going to place an order with Steve Turay for one of his Whispers and then this morning I was offered a deal on a Baraga that I just couldn’t pass up.
-
You will love it! Good choice
-
Congrats on the new to you bow, you’ll love it. But don’t be afraid to keep your order with Steve, you can never have enough Northern Mists in my opinion. After next weekend I’ll be up to 5. :goldtooth:

I just acquired this one last Saturday, it is Steve's American model, it belonged to one of my good buddies who passed away in January. It's a 66" 53# at 28", he was left handed, so it's been interesting for me trying to shoot it as I'm right handed. This was the last group of four I shot monday night. I had only shot 5 or 6 groups, doesn't take long to tire out. I was shoot 12ish paces from the target, my other groups I was able to keep them on the target...not really groups, more just scattered shots. :bigsmyl: The arrows I was shooting were his also, some 2114s he put wraps on and fletched, I'm going to keep practicing with it to try to build up my muscles shooting left handed and hopefully make an attempt at using it next year to hunt with. I have some blue Zwickey 4 blades that were his I will be using this year. Told my other buddies that I was pretty sure I heard him laughing at me fumbling around trying to get arrows knocked, and keep the arrow from falling off the shelf while drawing. :knothead: All things considered it was a very enjoyable shooting session even though it was a short one.

Sorry to hear about your buddy. I'm pretty sure in heaven they have Northern Mists up there too....
The American is a fine bow. I own one too. Take care. Good shooting!
