I'm in the middle of trying to get my shop rearranged and organized for making bows and other general carpentry work (as needed). I'd like to see how you guys set things up, including workbenches.... I need to get at least one large assembly bench made and maybe would use it as an out feed for the tablesaw.
This is the space I'm working with, and the upstairs is just as big...
Thinking I may put all the woodshop stuff upstairs and have this space as vehicle work and have all the metal fab and welding stuff down here.
So let's see some workbench and shop pics.
-
Mine's still under construction. Big chunk of bowling alley laying in the middle of the floor. Crap everywhere. It's embarassing. You don't want to see it right now.

Did you see the pic I attached?!?! My dad was worse than I am with cleaning a work area, he never threw anything out and would just as soon by a 2nd or 5th tool instead of try to find the 1st one.
I have a whole grade school parquet gym floor, in 8 barrels, behind the black tool chests on the left... Whatever glue they used to install it, pulled chunks of the concrete up with it when they removed it.... They were going to the dumpster with it, my dad thought that was a waste. :banghead:

I may post a pic when bow season is over and I can pick stuff up a bit.
Roy needs to post his, it's clean!!

I'll be calling you after January Kenny. Our bow season is done then, and I should have some idea of what I all need by then. I have a 24" drum sander, so I'd like to get some taper sleds.
Also, could I take your original 62/64 pattern and add 1" like you did? Or should I order a new pattern?

Nice shop... Looks like you have plenty of room...
I have a small shop and I do all my dirty work outside which is about 90% of making a bow... So I like a lot of things on wheels... Here are some things that may benefit you... A rolling work station with all your small go-to tools on it and put misc. stuff like rags and such on it to keep clutter off the work table... Make sure you use big sturdy wheels so it is easy to roll around... Once you find a happy place for it you may keep it in one spot...
A work bench with a perfectly flat surface... I used a 36" exterior door slab... They are pretty damn flat... And I built a frame under it and trued it up with some wedges... I installed a bow stringing device at the end of the table... Very handy...

I do have a handful of those old solid wood table tops from a school or something. And I used an old solid door and lower cabinets (back to back) on a wheeled cart for a bench in another shop that has turned into a storage top... Need to clean that up and see if I can utilize it...that one is 3 cabinets and drawers in each side, overhang on one end with some pegboard on each end, and I worked up outlets on each end and a long extension cord to plug it in.
For that bow stringer do you pull up or push down the top limb?
-
I push down...

Yep, you can . Just draw the new curve. Then bend something like a pc of glass around curve and where it starts to be sure no bumps or dips...

Here is my shop, a bit cold, but then again you do not need much to make a couple of lams and glue up a stick. :bigsmyl:

Wow Roy. I dont see a table saw or sanders. The shop looks like an OR room...........
....work area in garage.
-
That's what I was thinking... Looks a bit Sterile...
-
That picture was taken before the first bow was made in her.
Ya otta see it now:)

I hope to update this thread with a new shop in about 3-4 months!!
My current situation is cramped and in need of a major cleaning!!
-
I'm getting power this week! 36 outlets in a 18'x24' shop
-
You'll have to post an updated pic of when your shop is all filled up, Ben. I have a huge backyard that someday (when the mortgage is paid off!) the wifey said I could build a "man shed". It's going to be a woodworking/bow building shop, of course, but I really don't know how big to make it. 18' x 24' would be on the larger side of what I have in mind, so it would be nice to see what yours looks like finished.
-
A big shop is never big enuff!! :biglaugh:
-
That is pretty fancy BMorv Kenny is correct on the size.
-
Well, the wife will be certain to make sure I don't "outgrow" anything I build!! As much as I would love to have a 2500 sq ft shop. ;)

Yeah it is more fancy than I would have liked. I wanted a wooden barn. But my wife is fancy and it's harder to get my plans approved by her than it is to get the city to approve it. LOL. I build it completely by myself if it helps with your idea of it being too fancy...

Shop space is like pockets on a backpack... You know you gonna fill them suckers with a lot stuff you probably don't need!! :biglaugh:
-
Mine is 14X30 and it filled up in no time, I wish it was just a little bigger now.
-
My building is 50x30, but it is also 2 stories plus enough room for a loft at the top.
I want to build a doorway and deck off the 2nd story, as that would look down on the 50yd archery range on the north side. :shaka:

Haha. And you don't have to worry about a filter for the fine particles that get through the bag.

I bet this is Roy's most used tool in the workshop :bigsmyl:
-
Used to be, Clint.
Been 4 months now with no beer for Roy:)
I feel a hell of a lot better..
Shop not clean no more.
-
Good for you Roy. I bet your bows are a little straighter now. It's been 39 years with no beer for me.

You call that a messy shop? I’ll show you a real mess!
Dave.

Here’s a real mess. The result of two years of spending too much time at work and not enough in the shop. I’m waiting for a warm weekend so I can clean it out. :)
Dave.
-
That's not bad, David...
-
You can’t see the trash piled up behind the table saw. I’m back in there this year. I promised myself that I’d work less and enjoy my shop more.
Dave.
-
It is not always this tidy.
-
Bue, I love your shop.
I love knotty pine.

That looks more familiar to me. :biglaugh:
Guess it’s been awhile since I’ve stopped to see ya, since we had beers last time I was there. I’m gonna have to find a good excuse to get over that way.
I’d post pics of my shop.....if I had one. Some work is done in the garage, some in the basement, some in the building at work. Hell, some is done in the driveway. :biglaugh:
-
I gave up the stuff 31 years ago, having it in one's life is not near as necessary as some people think.
-
Bue, I love your shop.
I love knotty pine.
I agree. I always admired your shop when you post pictures.
-
My little piece of heaven.
-
Good shop, stairway to heaven. ;)
-
I love that loft idea Gary. I plan to do the same in mine if more space is needed.
-
You guys are cracking me up with these pics of your so called dirty shops... you can’t see the floor in my shop. It’s in the basement of my house, constantly getting yelled at by the wife for tracking saw dust up the stairs.
I’m not sure I could function in a clean shop with everything put in its place.
Good for you Roy! It’s been almost 17 years with no beers for me. Don’t miss it even a little!
