Title: Removing primary feathers from turkeys
Post by: Craig/FL on March 30, 2008, 02:46:00 PM
Shot a turkey last weekend and would like to save the primaries for fletching, I tried pulling them out but they seem kinda tough and and didnt want to damage them. Is there a trick to getting em out or should I just keep pulling. Thanks, Craig

Just take a pair of prunning shears and cut them off at the flesh.

I process quite a few goose wings a year and have found the very best way is to cut them  with heavy duty scissors or shears.  when you do this it will make a bit of a mess by cutting the very small feathers that cover the bases of the primaries and secondary feathers.

Good luck and enjoy !

If you don't get em out in a couple hours after the kill. It is very hard to pull best to cut as everyone said.

Pretty easy to get out of a fresh bird.
