I got a chance to hunt Iowa for 21 days this fall. I kept my video camera rolling from stand while passing up many deer. That is the great thing about this sport, we have the freedom to shoot when the time is right. Since I can still hunt Illinois this season, I wanted to try for a mature buck in Iowa. I did not get at chance at the big guys, but the process aloud me many close encounters. The following photos are stills from some of the video. Mike

Lots of young fawns. Late breeders from last season.

Very cold weather in early November this year. Coyotes were chasing quite a bit. When fawns are alone during the mating season, they become vulnerable.
On the way home I hunted my Illinois property and squeaked in a coyote. Mike

Great pictures Mike....I’d be more than happy with a lot of those deer!
-
You did not get a picture of the one that I have been after. You must have been hunting in a deer rich area, I do not. A guy gets kind of fussy about what is and is not a good shot when they get real big. The old should or should not question has saved him, so far.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, and well done on the coyote.
-
Thanks for the great photos!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing these incredible photos!

Way Cool! Thanks for sharing Mike!

Mike thanks for the pictures and if my count is correct I see 33 different bucks in those but some I skipped cause it looks to appear to be a few of the same buck?
Anyway it looks like you had a great time in the woods so far this year and thanks for sharing those pictures with all of us. :archer:

I usually tell my stories through written or spoken word, but this time I just wanted the photos to help tell the story. Keffer was right to assume I saw many bucks, and deer in general. I hunted dawn to dark every day. Being in the woods 12 to 13 hours a day, every day lends it self to the capture of great information. The property was a private farm of 25% hay field and the rest a mixture of rolling ridges of hard woods and slopes of cedar and shingle oak thickets. The only human intrusion was me. Deer acted like deer, and it was refreshing to see bucks actually feeding undisturbed during daylight. I saw rubbing, sparring, scraping, posturing, chasing, tending, scent checking, and fleeing. All the natural things that buck deer do. It also stress that no matter how smart we think we are, hunting them in their environment, being selective, and committing to only close range shooting is about as challenging as it gets. I am so happy for the experience, and hope to continue my pursuits. Mike

Good stuff Mike. Congrats on the yotes, good luck in Illinois
-
Mike, looks like you had a great hunt.
-
I bet you would have got one if you tried a little harder buddy! :biglaugh: I also have not shot an arrow yet this year so I know the feeling. BW
-
Well, at least I don't feel so bad, I haven't shot an arrow yet either, but would have never passed on your #5, Mike... :archer:
Best of luck the rest of the season...
-
Congrats for your hunt it is been a success anyway. To be able to take pics that close at so many dandy bucks is fulfilling.
Thanks for sharing

Mike,
I know many folks would jump at the chance to take just one of those bucks if presented the opportunity but as I get older and a "Little" more wiser as each year go's by I say you have had a "Good hunt" and not drawing your bow and releasing an arrow doesn't mean you didn't have a good hunt.
You actually got to witness these bucks as they were in their natural state and not being pressured by a army of hunters and that is part of hunting and why many Traditional folks take up the stickbow.
To bring home a deer to fill an empty freezer is a gift but also what we see and enjoy is also a gift and a blessing from He who created it all!
The Moose hunt was another one of those gifts and especially after He let you know that Bull with the scar was still in the "Great Outdoors" and One with the wilderness as well!
Imagine if you will and you were that Bull Moose and thinking "Hey that tall fella looks just like the guy I saw a few years ago in this same area" except he aged a little... :archer:

Awesome pics mike thxs for sharing lots of great bucks which many of us would consider trophies!
-
Mike, looks like you had a good hunt. Uncle Gene and myself gave it a good try but the really big ones just weren't there. Maybe during the late season.
-
Great photos thanks!
-
Really nice photos, what kind or type of camera do you use or recommend. I use to video a fair amount but haven't for lots of years, I think it was the super 8 days.
-
Great pictures and thanks for sharing!
-
Very nice Mike! Thanks for sharing. I hope you are well and best of luck for the remainder of the season.

Keefer , you are right. I do dream of moose while hunting deer, and dream of deer while hunting moose. We are always careful to worship the creator and not the creations. I have memories of these deer captured on film. The Canon XA30 camcorder takes the video and I can get a digital image of any paused frame.
John, The hunt started with hanging stands in July, and scouting sign made from deer that lived there while hoping to take an unknown buck that moves into the area and interacts with the deer I got to know so well. Some of the bucks I passed up at less than 20 yards from five different stands. Soon the gun season will be upon them and their world I shared with them will not be the same.
-
Really good stuff Mike! Awesome pictures of some great bucks!
-
Awesome pics as usual Mike! Some of those bucks are pretty darn nice. I don't think I could have lasted 21 days of watching those walk by! Iowa is a special place for sure.

Great pictures Mike!

I would be shooting , my self control knob don’t work so good...

Mike, I know how you hunt (or at least see it anyway lol!) and I know you don’t just shoot to kill it’s got to be what makes it right for you and that’s how hunting should be. I too hope you continue to chase and share! That blue jay is phenomenal! So blue! Thank you for sharing!
-
Thank you Mike, I enjoyed them.
-
Outstanding as always.......must be nice to hunt where deer numbers are good. You see more deer in 21 days than I have seen in hunting more than 50 years. :notworthy:
-
That will change now -you're not in NY anymore
-
Beautiful pics. Thanks for sharing with us!
-
I love the feeling right after a buck stares me down at length in the tree, and then looks away. To watch that video footage takes me right back to the intensity of eyes, followed by immense relief in knowing that indeed I could have taken him.
-
Mike, thank you for all the effort you do to preserve the moments on film AND share them with us all... You are one dedicated and determined fellow.
There is no doubt the Majesty & Power of our Creator comes through in your work, film, pics, and posts....
Well done...

Mike,
Super photos! I have a little spot in PA. I have been watching two bucks all year. Hunted hard from October 25th to November 12th when the PA Came Commission ENDS the archery season. I saw both of my hit-list bucks multiple times but never within the 25-yard line. Trail cams showed that I needed a couple more days - that's all.
I'm quietly praying that my two boys make it through the gun season. I heard rifle shots all up and down the mountain from November 1 on even though the fire-arms season didn't start until the 26th. Pennsylvania has a problem!
But I still had a good season - action every day, loads of "skippers" walking by totally unaware I was there. Next year I will be a little wiser for having had this year.
I'm waiting for your next video!

I really enjoyed the photos. I copied and sent the link to my son and grandson. Both are getting pretty serious about photography, especially outdoor subjects.
I mostly gave up picture taking when I couldn't find flashcubes any longer. :goldtooth:

Very cool, Mike! Thanks for sharing. Love the owl!
