Title: Kids bamboo bows
Post by: jdeitz10 on November 23, 2018, 10:20:36 PM
I am looking for Christmas present ideas. Have any of you built small kids bows out of bamboo. These would be for a 3 and 5 year old, so around the 10lb range. I am thinking of doing a bamboo back and belly? Also if anyone has ideas on soft tips for the arrows I would love to hear what you all do for the youngsters?

I make bamboo slat bows -- bend-through-the-handle classic flatbows for adults, 30# up.  All it would take is a belt sander -- even the wedged belt upward hand-held sander that I use -- to thin down the flat side a couple millimeters more to make one 10# instead of 30.

I use split culms, with the rounded side on the belly and the back flat.  I often glue on wooden tips.  The last photo shows the strung bow with an initial tillering string and no handle wrap.  I use #36 Mason's line.  Then I hand-sand the back to reach the draw weight I prefer.
