I'm on the list for a Mountain Monarch, likely coming up in spring summer. I know Jim is great at walking guys through the process of whats good, what looks good together, and what he can do. But being me I need to research some option and see what I will want before talking to Jim.
I am looking at options for riser woods, I really like all the Maples, spalted, curly and my favorite being quilted. I'm not set on Maples and am open to other suggestions also. I also don't know if I would need a little more riser weight and density (like maybe an ebony). For limbs I'm looking for something that has a natural camo parttern to fit in with Jack Pine / Aspen forests.
I have looked at lots of bows and wood options on this site and others, but would like to see some unique stuff if you wouldn't mind showing pictures.
I would also really like to see different and unique options for limb tips and riser overlays.
I'm not big into the snake skins, they are cool but just not for me.
Post away Merle, post away...lol
Thanks
Tim
Here ya go. The green one is stained green spalted. The other is buckeye burl. The last is gancola alves.

I have been thinking of stained Maple, seeing that Alexander makes me lean even more so that way. That is a beauty and very unique. Is that sheep Horn?
Thanks
Yes,audaud.

riser is Koa and macassar ebony , limbs are spalted myrtle burl
Alexander Traditional, I'm going to correct you if you don't mind. The riser next to the buckeye is Che chen. The limbs may...or may not be goncalo, but then we can't see them in the picture.
The risers have some mass weight as they are due to the 3/4" I-beam of G10 in each one. Also any stabilized wood will have extra mass too. Most of the spalted and all of the dyed maple is stabilized. All of the buckeye is stabilized.
I recommend choosing your limb veneers first since they are the most visible to humans... Animals are color blind and "natural camo" means nothing to them. Sorry, just something I hear so often that it picks at me a bit. After all, most of us hunt with feathers so bright that if there was a camo issue, the critters would certainly pick up on the feathers first.
All the bows pictured in this thread have what I call footed risers as well. It is an option.
Thanks, BigJim
likely should have said natural contrasts and heavy grain instead of natural camo..Something similar to vias and asat camos...
It's no sweat! I can even do the natural camo :goldtooth:
Hope you had a good thanksgiving.
BIgJim
Please post some pictures of limb tips and riser overlays and let me know what material.
Thanks
My sweetheart. 64" 2pc Monarch.

There are so many sweet looking veneers out there.
One type that has caught my eye for being a cool looking "break-up" type of natural camo is stained zebrawood (least I think it's stained) that was cut in a way that the banding goes across the limbs rather than up and down.
Pretty sure Big Jim would do these (Seems he does most everything)
I've mostly seen them on Silvertips.
I've also wondered about..dare I say it...stained black and white ebony.
Don't see a lot of Zebra veneers those are sweet!
Hey Zradix that bow is mine, lol.

what horn is that on riser overlay?
That is unicorn!... I mean sheep. :goldtooth:
BigJim
can anyone show me some impala riser over lays or something black
Big Jim's California Buckeye Burl is as beautiful as it gets. Has a natural camo appearance too.
ttt
STOP IT Chuck!!!!!! You'll cause me to spend money. :nono:
My preference has been to go with increased riser mass weight over beauty. Big Jim's use of G10 with my own maple riser has proven to provide ample mass wt to be extremely stable and provides a very pleasant shot execution feel.
I have been using a lot of stabilizied spalted maple lately. Mostly I am using the natural color of the wood (only slightly darker due to the stabilizing) but some times blue, green or red.
It is very attractive and each piece unique not to mention more than ample mass weight.
BigJim
ok what do you think...stabilizied spalted maple and ebony or g10 footed riser, and maple limbs...maybe spalted ...maybe quilted.with Gemsbok riser backing and limb tips...and black beaver tail.
I like the sound of spalted maple and ebony for a riser and just about any limb veneers will look good with that.
For black horn, I prefer to use springbok.. they look nearly the same as gemsbok except there is much more detail... they simply look better.
Thanks, BigJim
Thanks Jim...you have so many options it is overwhelming...but thank everyone especially you on input..still thinking on but getting closer.
there has to be more BJ mtn monarch and other bow pictures with options...need more limb ideas.

a friend's bow, that just freshly came out of Jim's shop.
These are some good looking bows. I love them
Hummer that one looks great! 👍👍
Fine looking bows.
I've owned several custom bows in my lifetime. I have only used my own home made bows for the last 15 years. BUT if I was to buy a new bow Big Jim's bow or Zipper would be at the top of my list.
Those are some sweet looking bows. I don't own one of big jims bows but have shot some at cloverdale. Sweetest shooting longbow Ive ever shot will own one in future!
That is a bunch of nice bows. I love to see some more Mountain Monarch photos....
Here is mine birch riser and myrtle limbs .

That's pretty Toke.
still more ideas, examples, options please.
This is what Im going with!!! very excited!!
mountain monarch 60 inches
two piece
high grip -good locator grip
satin finish
riser - spatted or quilted maple-stabilize with ebony footing
black and white ebony veneers
black beaver tail
spring-bok backing and tips
tips on angle like allans.
footed riser
Wow...!!!!
The big guy has expanded the word 'beauty'.
I'd be tempted to do quilted maple on the limbs. For the riser I'd go with quilted maple, myrtle burl, or buckeye burl. If you like a flare in the riser I would do black G10 and black horn overlays on the riser and tips. Otherwise I'd keep the riser clean looking and do a sheep horn or deer antler overlays.
The parameters have changed a little
mountain monarch 60 inches
two piece
high grip -good locator grip
satin finish
riser - stabilize Canadian spalted birch with black ebony footing
black and white ebony veneers, with heavy contrast
black beaver tail
spring-bok backing and tips
After all this, you will be required to post pictures when it arrives
A teaser, her name will be cloaded leapord, you will know why.

We will have to get to know each other very soon come spring, bear season opens April 15, but bear hunting here really doesn't start until early May. Then off to hunt Mtn goat in August.
I hope the weather turns soon so I can get out and give her a try. I'd be scared to pull her back in the temps we are having.
She is in the mail, I think. I don't think I can remember being this pumped up since about 6 years old at Christmas. I will post some final pics when she arrives.
Made a couple puffs for the mountain monarch.

I will give an update when I get a chance to shoot it. (not really a chance we are into the coldest February on record here (Average highs are -27'C with windchill's in mid -40's). I am both scared to take the bow out to shoot, and scared to take myself out to shoot it. X-ing my fingers that spring comes before May, so I can get out early.

thanks for the offer...lol
Outstanding work from Jim. Yup they shoot as good as they look.
