Well, construction will be slowing a bit soon, so I think I'll throw a bow together.
Just have to decide what to put in it and what design :bigsmyl:....
-
60 in.FHLB carbon limbed Rocket ?
-
FHLB for sure
. Be nice to build one with and one without carbon just to see if it really is all that> 3-5 if your lucky with it on the front.
.
-
I don't know, the 58" fhlb I cant seem to get arrows stiff enough for now. I have a 49.74# @ 28" bow and 400s with a quarter inch cut off (for a different bow) , added 90 grains of rope in em and have the side plate built out a quarter inch , still limber. I need to chrony this beast!!
-
You could use SK for a substrate for the carbon on back and belly, lower the weight to 40 lb you would have a heck of a old man late season bow like I need...lol
-
Hint.................
Easy peasy ole timer..
-
I want somethin I can't blow up too easy Roy. I'm not a boo backed bowyer ... :biglaugh:
-
Heck ya haven't had fun till one explodes on the tree...
-
LOL
-
I think it should be a 60-62” FHLB at about 55-60#@29”. Black glass on the back green on the belly. Maple cores with a camo actinwood riser. That way when I order my pieces you’ll have the stack all figured out.

I guess I am gonna have to build a 58 in. My new form will do a 62 in. to.
-
Hey Kenny you should put all the suggestions in a hat and draw a ticket & build that bow...lol :o or I could ask my wife she is good at telling people what they need to build :biglaugh:
-
And I bet you hope she dont read your post :scared:
-
No worries on that!!
-
Lol not unless Im posting on Better Homes & Garden or Pottery Barn threads :cheesy:
-
Hmmm, been thinkin... Did ya see the smoke?? (Had to beat Roy to that one)
Maybe a 60" forward handle …….. static curve.. Then if I ever get my riser profile sander done I can use same riser in both bows.. maybe..
-
Brand new design or something you all ready played with ? :o
-
Kenny, I've been working on the same thing. My handle might be set back slightly more than yours if your using the same handle pattern as your short long bow and mine will be a 59". All my stuff is odd.
-
If I can use the same riser and deflex as the fhlb, it will be great but I ain't sceered to go all out new either....
But I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet, got deer to chase!!
-
Maybe ya otta go wif a longer riser instead of that shorty ya been using...
What will that do wif yer lay out and stack?
-
No idea, its all testing !!
-
Looking forward to the test results...
Ya gonna make up one of them foc charts for testing?
-
Maybe a DFC chart... I got some printed off in the shop . :)
-
Ya that one...
-
I'm just curious what length your thinking ? That would be cool if it was of the same riser design sense a lot of guys are all ready set up for it !
-
Recurve??
Stepping out of the comfort zone :biglaugh:
-
Curve sounds good. Not crazy about statics though. It would be neat if you could keep it 1 1/2. Stable core :)
-
Thinkin 58/60, think that would work for a static? But maybe with 1.75" wide limbs?
-
I likes statics just cant never figure out how to get them as quite as my long bows stabil-kore 1 1/2 would be cool and wicked fast maybe quiter to 😃
-
Maybe a built in tip wedge grind to help get those tips solid. :shaka:
-
Only been 3 days now..
How long this gonna take Ole Timer?
I think ya otta build a little girl her first bow:)
I know ya gots some pink material stored in that shop...
-
Maybe a new grind supper lam with thicker wedges & riser inserts for a bolt on quiver grab and go hunting rig 🤔
-
Brandon Stahl builds his curves at 1.5" so you shouldn't hesitate!
-
I've been building my statics 1 7/16 wide. A riser with interchangeable limbs is something that I've been putting off. Can't wait to see it Kenny.
-
I'm not sure the geometry of a curve and a D/R will mesh, still kicking it around, winters comin... :)
-
Yeah I think you can figure it out. ;)
-
Plenty of time to ponder ,its going to be a long cold winter 🌨☃️
-
Yup and I have deer that need tended to :bigsmyl:
-
Hmm a static curve that shares the same riser as the fhlb sounds like it sure would be a shooter
-
All of my recurves are 1.5. Stabilcore or uniweft for a little added stability.
-
So Kenny have you come up with anything? I have played with this idea. Tell me what you think. I am thinking using more of the hook And that super lam idea may be a way to go with some stable core.

-
I like how your thinking there Mike ,I don't know how this will apply but when I modified Kenny's original design out to 64 in. It brought the tips out to about 3 in. in front of the handle ,I had to add about a 1 1/2 in brace height to keep the string from slapping the limbs but with the brace height higher it seemed to be less picky on arrow spine for some reason ,it might be different with static tips but figured I would throw it out here tell Kenny chimes in.

That looks close to what I've been doing. It should work just fine.
-
Really looking forward to what you guys come up with. Imo the more streamline risers like the forward riser or 50's style are about as sweet shooting as you can get
-
I aint got a clue where to start with a stack :dunno: I got one other one to do first. though.
-
I like the one with more hook, it gives a bit more preload, which on D/R s I've found to be a little quieter. More string tension stops the limb vibration quicker?
Are you going 1.5" wide limbs?
-
1.75 starting out and ends up about 1 5/8s when cleaned up. Stack on the first one will be a SWAG
-
Mike what draw weight are you going to shoot for ?
-
45 sounds good to me . I have this limb design in another bow with a longer riser and after I built it I was thinking I needed to use more of the hook. Just never got around to changing it. I will have to check with the changes in riser length and string groove may have about the same amount of working limb. Still gonna be a SWAG for stack.
-
Mike I don't know diddly about recurves but that riser looks so far forward that I am having a hard time visualizing it strung up... Do you have a sketch at what it would look like at brace??
-
Just look at the belly side and it aint that bad. Look at the Widow one piece curve.
-
Ok... I looked at the widow... I got a better idea how it will look now... I am not familiar with recurves and with all the curves and a lot of deflex it is hard for me to imagine it at brace...
-
All thats going on is now is what used to be the front of the bow is now the throat side.
-
Here we go. Gettin there. With a 16 in. riser I will have about 22 in. working limb. Thinking about 18 in. instead ??

Im glad you picked up the ball Mike are you going to use the .001 or no taper ? Looking good when I retire Im going to be just like you :bigsmyl:
-
Have not decided on taper yet. No more than .001 for sure. Not even sure about a stack yet. Maybe around .230
-
I have been spending a lot of time thinking about your design but nothing to offer but just questions how where you shortening working limb increasing static areas or increasing riser length ?
-
Longer riser.
-
Would lengthening the power lam do the same thing ? I'm just asking ,I was thinking trying to keep the riser standard like the FHLB one it would simplify making both bows ? I'm just asking questions trying to learn Mike !
-
Kinda sorta yes. Power lam will flex more than a longer riser. I thought about using the superlam but not sure the tip wedge part would be where it needs to be. Also unless you do these forms with a CNC aint no way they will be just alike.
-
I just picked up the supper lam sled from Kenny it probably wouldnt take much to modify a supper lam custom made to work shorter or longer wedge or PL sense your doing the dirty work I would bet you could talk our buddy into making one when you figure out what you want :goldtooth:

I wondered about doing that, I am really liking the shorter bows and was curious how much of the wedge would be lost.
-
Where is Kenny? We kinda hijacked his thread here. Maybe could shed some light on this??
-
He has been hunting hard...
-
I don't know MIA ,we will have to bring him up to speed when he gets back...lol , Lonnie I will check the measurement on the stock supper lam over the week end ,but was thinking you could use the same sled replicated with a few inches shorter out of the middle to fit the new bow using the same tapers as the original & end up with thicker wedge , I like this threads makes your brain work !
-
Sorry folks, lotsa stuff going right now with work , shop , the lease, huntin , and a grandbaby. :bigsmyl:
Lonnie the SL has a 11” wedge on both ends. So if you shorten the riser also you can trim that end some . I like at least2” past riser end. There’s 14” in middle of lam that isn’t wedge , you can check the math on your bow.

On the Asian continent my math skills would be referred to as "sucky much" but it sounds like if I have a 15" riser I would get about 3.5" of power lam and a 60" bow would end up with about 4-5" of wedge? Does that sound about right?
-
Hold on I will tell you in a min.
-
The way I figure it on a 60 in bow with your string groove 30 in. from center you get about 5 in. tip wedge before the string. Witch would be about perfect.
-
So another thought that just hit me. Does the super lam replace part of the taper in the stack? Meaning, if I have a .001 tapered lam and a .002 tapered lam, does the super lam replace one of those or is it an addition? No doubt it will be figured in the stack!?!?
-
My SL is an .001 so if you need .002 then add a regular .001 etc.
-
Been thinking , I may change up to a different idea... :)
-
Do tell...
-
How much older do I have to get before you tell us ?? :dunno:
-
Thanks for the PM and detailed pictures, Kenny.
I like that plan a lot better than your older one.
Especially the .003 reverse tapers on both ends of the super power lam.
My reverse form is almost completed too..

Who are you and what have you done with Roy?????

Still thinkin, Roy got the pics thru his ESP...
-
Ya been thunking fer ah long time ole timer:)
-
ESP everyday smarty pants
-
:biglaugh:
-
Hey:)
LOL
-
Trying to decide between a recurve and a narrow deep cored forward handle longbow with a heavy riser.
Whew....
-
How narrow where you thinking ?
-
Dont overload your thinkin thing--------- I say narrow longbow. Be interesting to see performance differences if any---and they look cool.
-
Narrow limbed long bows travel thru the woods nice just something nice about a skinny bow I like light and nimble ! I could keep playing with the standard FHLB and different lengths & material and we could compare performance on all 3 ?
-
Narrow it is the, gotta figure stack when I get time.
Ritchie, I'm thinkin about 3" wide...
Or maybe a tad over an inch. Stabilkore and good maple. Maybe 6 wood lams... Thats more glue lines tho. Hmmm...
-
Hmm I like the tad over 1in. better then the 3 in. ...lol sounds very doable , 6 glue lines might add a lot of mass just thinking out loud ! A lot of new designs popping up here I like it :bigsmyl:
-
Just how long is this all gonna take?
I'm pushen 71 ya know:)
-
I'll order ya a pacemaker off ebay bro...
-
Ah thanks Kenny.
You are all heart..
Hope it's not coming from China?
LOL
-
Says it is, is that bad ?

-
Not if ya get the one stick posted.
-
I bet you can check your arrow speed with that!! :biglaugh:
-
Now ya did, Kenny! There's gonna be a big ta do over who gets to install that pacemaker. :)
-
Ya’ll can put in.
I wanna be the guy that jump starts it!! :bigsmyl:
-
I think we could power it with a potato, we did that in school once.
-
Better Get the model that has the helps with E D option to !
-
You guys are so helpful.
-
Kenny how narrow and deep cored are we talking here? Something like a forward handle hill style longbow?
-
First He got to get Roy OK. :deadhorse:
-
I gotta change the pacemaker batteries, then I'll be back:)
-
Thinkin 1 to 1 1/8" except in grip area where I like a little more . If I can make it look like I want.
Still just theory.
Roy, I'll send ya some jumper cables... :biglaugh:
-

will that be a D profile limb or r/d
-
Heavy d/r . Will be on the forward handle 60” longbow
-
Roy, I'll send ya some jumper cables...
Ok send me a tracking number...
-
Check the sock drawer for those batteries first...
-
Does it weally take 3 weeks to fugger dugger out ah stack of glass an wood?
Admit it son, yer kalculator gots stuck huh?
-
Yup, found my kalkelater batteries in my socks. Got sumpin in the mail I may use in it along with some stabilkore , now gotta figure out some veneers. I think I got some zebras I won't ship cause they got a half inch bend in em. Or some curly sumpin, or some spalted hackberry a bud dropped off …..
Then the riser... bubinga, grenadillo, bocote, curly maple... I need some psychotic help...
-
Ah go classic kenny, bubinga with green glass
-
You know, that was thought of too! :goldtooth:
-
Bubinga and green glass is just a classic clean looking combo
-
I need some psychotic help...
Not touching that one:)
-
Maybe Roy can send you some that left over lectricity from them new lites for your kalkulator.
-
Ah Stic..
Don't confuesem..
He's gots enough pwoblems now..
-
I need some psychotic help...
Not touching that one:)
I figgered you would volunteer!! :biglaugh:
-
Heck I need psychiatric help too..
-
I had to get out my gibberish ta English dictionary just ya figgur out wut ya’ll was flappin your jibbs bout.

Was gonna start thus weekend, but several things going including blizzard conditions are keeping me too busy... :dunno:
Got my skidder plugged in and inside so I can clear snow tomorrow morn... :saywhat:
-
Yuk you keep the blizzard there> :nono:
-
I never thought I would say this but I'm actually enjoying this snow I'm on vacation don't have to really go any where for a week , & it will freshen up the hunting site for Thursday ! But I live in a small town home & they plow ! But in another week I will be the fool out plowing the hi ways for the winter ! :bigsmyl:
