I use goat rawhide for the strike plate... I like sanding everything before I glue... It is just a good practice and applies to most applications... The finish I use on my bows is an automobile matte urethane... I have been sanding the finish for the strike plate... What a PITA... It is such a small area and I end up usually sanding over the line...
My question is: Will super glue gel bond well to an unsanded auto finish??

I don’t know about super glue, but I use contact cement without sanding first.
Holds tight, but easily removed without effecting the finish.

Double face carpet tape...

Do you put it on both surfaces or just on the strike plate...
Roy... Where do you get your carpet tape?? Does Lowes or Home Depot carry a decent quality tape??

I've been using 3M ATG Transfer Tape for years on leather arrow strike plates and shelves. It's similar to the 'flooring tape' sold in the home improvement stores. The 3M tape is top shelf stuff. It's crazy sticky, holds through all sorts of weather, and I've had it on my hunting bows for 15 years and it's still right where I put it. If you want it off, it comes off without affecting the finish.... well, on any finishes I've used so far. Often, you can just roll/push it off with your thumb, or if you're in more of a hurry, use a moderate solvent to soften it, then wipe it off.
I'm confident it would hold thin rawhide on there, although, I wonder how bad the rawhide would want to curl and pull away as it was drying after it got soaked in the rain.
I bought the stuff at Lowes once after I ran out of the 3M, it worked ok. Now I'm stocked up on 3M ATG.

Super glue works for me or double sided tape used for arrow fletching.

I like Barge cement, which is just elastic contact cement. It really sticks on clean leather. Never had it come off unsanded conversion varnish.

Yes HD or lowes..

I only put it on the leather. Usually two coats, let it tack up, then stick it.

If I used leather I would use Barge or contact cement. I use velcro with a sticky side on it.

Yup, velcro works great also.
