Title: Hogs and Javelina Tradgang hunt.
Post by: Missouri Sherpa on September 20, 2018, 03:13:42 PM
I have an opening in our schedule for February  3-7, 2019.   5 day hunt for hogs and Javelina.    Strictly bowhunting only.   Arrive on Saturday Feb 2 for orientation to the ranch,   hunt Sunday through Thursday, depart by noon on Friday.
Over 80,000 acres.  We provide a good lease, warm dry bed to sleep in, complete kitchen setup, hot shower, good hog skinning facilities, freezer space and we run around 50 baits on a daily basis.  Tracking and bay dogs (Jagdterriers) on hand to help retrieve your wounded game.  You need to bring your sleeping bag, pillow, bath towel, groceries and beverages, cooler and transportation.  Requires a Texas 5 day nonresident hunting license ($48.50) available over the counter at license sellers statewide.  This is not a white table cloth operation, more like a timeshare in a good hunting camp.  You will need to feed and fend for yourself but we will be available to run interference and assist you in having an enjoyable hunt.  We will let you know where the baits are getting hit and where your best chances of getting a javelina will be.

We have very few rules but these rules must be observed.  1.  No guns on the ranch.  2.  You must close every gate that you drive through.  We cannot afford to have cattle get out on the road.  3.  Limit to one Javelina per hunter.  Your license is good for 2 javies but we impose a limit of one.   We have a decent javelina population and do not want to overharvest.  The javelina have enough trouble competing with the exploding hog population without us putting an unnecessary dent in their numbers.

5 Day hunt is $750.00 per hunter.  $250 deposit to reserve your spot, balance due in cash on arrival.  We would like to limit this hunt to tradgang hunters.  We have bunk space in the shop bunkhouse for 12-15, though 10 is a more comfortable number.  We can easily accommodate 5-7  in the Crane bunkhouse.  We have bedrooms with attached bathrooms in the Crane bunkhouse, may be useful if we have mixed gender hunters that want to participate.

John....where is this hunt located?

This hunt is in Crane County Texas.  Crane is the county seat of Crane County.  Ranch is located about 30 miles south of Odessa, Texas.  West Texas oil patch, not especially pretty but we do have Javelina and hogs.

Crane has a good grocery store, hardware store, several restaurants and convenience/gas stores. Crane is within easy driving distance of the northwest bunkhouse, <20 miles.

I highly recommend them. Nobody will work harder than Jacob to put you on hogs. And for a bonus, especially for us northerners, it's Texas in February

Is there a good population of rattlers to shoot there?
I hunted the king ranch in kingsville years ago.  Sounds about the same.  Was a good time.

We have plenty of rattlesnakes in west Texas.  We only hunt hogs January through mid March and the snakes are usually hibernating that time of year.   The famous big rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater is just a few miles east of us.   We need to see daytime highs of 85 F for around three consecutive days to break hibernation.  Every few years we will have a warm spell and start to see some snakes on our later hunts, but usually no snakes awake during the winter.

I went hunting here with some Gangers back in 2014 and it is legit.  Solid "man" accommodations and a truly vast territory to hunt.  There are hogs and javies in great numbers and some truly bruiser hogs mixed in.  It is indeed like the planet Mars with bushes haha, pretty fascinating and you can night hunt which is awesome.  I had a songdog symphony while I sat on stand one eve if I recall.  It is nice and far from civilization and when you're on stand or roaming you'll have some nice solitude.  80k acres=125 square miles.  Jacob, Shaun and the fellas out there will take care of you well.

Hope we get some more interested so we can fill it up with all TGers

I need to update our availability.  I have received a deposit to fill up the Crane Bunkhouse for this weeks hunt, Feb 3-7, 2019.    I am holding the old shop bunkhouse on the northwest corner of the ranch open for Tradgang hunters only.  I would like to limit this to an additional 8 hunters for the week of Feb 3-7.
We can probably handle more than 8 but we are expecting up to 6 hunters on the east end of the ranch in the Crane bunkhouse and we want to insure everyone has multiple stands available hunt.  We like to have around 12-14 guys a week between both camps.  We have never been accused of overbooking our hunting capacity and this is no time to start.

I have a group of regular hunters that usually hunt out of the old shop bunkhouse the week of Feb 10.    I received deposits from them this week and only three guys have committed to come so far for 2018.  We are asking them if they would be willing to move to the Crane bunkhouse ( has less capacity than the old bunkhouse) so we could also offer a larger group the option of coming the week of Feb 10-14.  We can comfortably have 6-7 guys in the Crane bunkhouse so we will have availability for up to 6-10 guys in a group for the week of Feb 10 for 2019.  Stay tuned for further developments as we firm up our scheduling commitments.

Early afternoon arrival.  We don't have a deadline but you should plan on having some daylight hours to get an orientation to the ranch.  We have good maps/aerial photos of the entire ranch to help you navigate but its best to get your bearings while you can see some landmarks.

We found out last week that we have secured another 30 sections of ranch south of Crane,  that runs along the Pecos river.  We have not hunted this ranch before.  Jacob is going to start baiting this parcel in mid December and put out some trail cameras.  I hope we can take a few of you down there and kill some pigs.  My limited experience of hunting along the river is the pigs do not have to concentrate on waterholes so they are more prone to wander up and down the river.  Sometimes they are plentiful other times they can be gone for a spell.  I suspect they will be vulnerable to a generous feeding of Iowa corn on a regular basis, but we will have to prove that.

Thanks John, we're looking at an arrival time of round 1 at the ranch.  Smoking Joe and I  will be solidifying this by the end of the week. Also will we need four wheel drive to ride around the ranch or will any old rental car do?
Title: Re: Hogs and Javelina Tradgang hunt.
Post by: Missouri Sherpa on November 05, 2018, 06:25:26 PM
Any car will do.  The oil companies have a good road system that they maintain.  You can drive to within sight of most of the waterholes.   We keep a couple of old 4x4 trucks in Texas that we use to bring in your dead pigs if you do not have a truck.

5 day hunt for Hogs and Javelina.    Hogs no limit, no trophy fees.  One Javelina limit.  We have an abundance of hogs.  They are out reproducing the Javelina.  Come on down and kill some pigs.

Sorry, I missed the hog part.  It does sound like fun, but I am just recovering from the cost of my Africa trip.  I go to west Texas nearly every year for the past 15 for javelina and they are a lot of fun.

Yes they are a lot of fun. I've got hogs here plenty of places in three different states, however Texas is its own place just like the swamps of South Georgia Cypress bottoms of South Carolina and the Everglades of Florida, Texas has its own Terrain.

I went every year for probably 12 years, but I hadn't been in about 4 and I just need to go back. Will know in a week or two Smokin Joe and I will be pairing up and anybody wants to join us please jump on this thread.

Mr. Berger,

Info may be forthcoming but, will we be hunting stands over bait, stalking or can we choose to do either?  Also interested in night hunting, I assume that would be from stands.  Do we need red lights for that?  Thanks,  8 weeks to go which is just around the corner.

We run around 50 baits on these ranches, probably a few more this year with the additional 30 sections we are adding along the Pecos river.    There will be all kinds of setups at these bait sites.  Some tripod stands, double bull blinds, pit blinds dug into the bank of the ponds, and brush blinds made up of piled up mesquite or whatever else is handy.  There will likely be more than one blind to sit at your bait, it is up to you to figure out which way the wind is blowing and pick a seat that is downwind.   Sometimes it might even be better to not sit in the blind.  If you can back away from the feeder a 100 yards or so and still keep the feeder in sight you can watch the hogs as they come in to eat.  Sometimes they will circle the bait site (and the blinds) several times trying to pick off a hunter before they commit to start feeding.  Once they let their guard down to come in to the bait and you can hear them start cracking the corn you can slip in on the bare sand, keeping downwind from them and get within comfortable shooting distance. When they get preoccupied with finding the corn you have a much better chance of shooting them.

A hog is every bit as wary as an old whitetail buck.  He has big ears that allow him to hear everything and a nose capable of smelling a worm a foot underground or you from 100 yards away if the wind is right.  Don't be fooled that they can't see either.  A hog has an eyeball that looks eerily similar to a humans and has as good of vision as you or me, not as good as a deer but they aren't blind either.  I suspect they probably get nearsighted as they get older but don't depend on it.  I would recommend that you don't wander too far and wide or you will scare away more hogs than you see.   We put a lot of effort into keeping the hogs coming back to the baits and not running them off the ranch.   I have to ask how many big old whitetail bucks you have killed stalking whitetails in ankle deep dry oak leaves.  Probably zero.  Texas is pretty dry and if you are not sticking to the bare sand (which is not practical or possible in a lot of places) you will be making way too much noise to have any expectation of being successful in stalking up on hogs.  If you are wanting to do some spot and stalk hunting  you should probably hunt down along the Pecos river instead of the bait sites we cultivate.

We have to hunt Javelina during the daylight hours.  They are a game animal, no night hunting and no dogs, game and fish have rules about that.   We will corn the roads in areas where Javelina are known to frequent or you can sit blinds at waterholes in those same areas and will have a decent opportunity at getting one in the daylight.  Hogs on the other hand are not subject to the limitations of such rules.   We bait them, trap them, hunt them at night and use dogs on them.  They are frequently nocturnal, more often than not.  While we have guys that kill some hogs during the day or evening before dark there will be much more action after the sun goes down.  Go hunting prepared to stay out a couple hours after sunset.   A bow mounted light will help.  A red filter or green filter will diminish the effect of the light on scaring the hogs.  A good technique to use is to point your bow towards the heavens when you turn the light on and lower it to focus on the hog.  Hogs don't tend to notice this as much as just pointing the light at the hog and turning it on.  When the light comes on abruptly most of the time the hogs will blow out of the area from the light coming on pointed at them.  If it is slowly lowered on to them they do not hardly seem to notice.  Get yourself a bow light and practice with it.

Hog hunting can be a lot of fun.  There is a learning curve however.  Some folks are better at it than others.  Most of our clients are regulars that have been hunting with us for a long time, some of them for 10 years.  The guys that keep coming back to hunt with us year after year are kind of hooked on it and keep on thinking of better ways to kill hogs on their next trip.  They also tend to kill more hogs than the novice hog hunters do.  You have to start somewhere I guess.  We will try to give you every opportunity to get on some pigs, and we hope you enjoy the trip.  We do have a lot of birds (doves and quail) in west Texas.  If you are interested in some bird hunting we can send you to the fellow that has the lease for the bird hunting. Everything is leased in Texas.

Send me a PM or post here if you have more questions.

Midland/Odessa Airport is fairly large so the chance of getting a reasonable round trip ticket is good.  Course, Amarillo has a large airport and that would be a longer drive.  You'd just have to check rates.

So question for you guys, what lights are you going to use?  Do you use a green headlamp type or attach a flashlight to your bow?  I was messing with my setup with red lights, 1 attached to my bow quiver and a headlamp on my hea but it was just ones I had laying around.

Any brands or specifics you guys use?

Medic77,

Don't mean to bust into your thread but I was there this past February and everyone was using a green beam light attached to their bows. There were some W Virginia members there that turned me on to attaching the light via a bicycle inner tube to the riser. A really slick and cheap way to affix the light.
I have a Vastfire that I bought off of E_ _ _ for cheap and they are extremely bright.

Hope this helps.

One more thing I learned that might be of importance. Try to get one with an on off switch and not the pressure switch. I bought a Ulako that has the on off feature instead of the pressure one.
I makes a huge difference at and after the shot.

You should be fine BigTimber,

"control remote pressure switch constant on and momentary on for different tactical needs"

As you mentioned, will just figure it out and practice, practice.

The guide at my camp suggested turning the light on as you point the bow skyward. Then bring the bow and beam down into the target. Or just point, grip it and rip it.

I'm planning to bring chile for all Saturday night.  Will be using some world famous (well, locally famous) Hatch green chiles that are not mild.

No sir, I was planning on just the trad camp (8 to 10 people I believe).  Afraid I don't know about another camp.

No worries about the other camp about stuff like that.  Just want to share a fire, story, and a few arrows.  There's only going to be 4 of us in the other

Medic77- "only 4 of us in the other camp"?  Well, given we don't have a board of directors of Crane Trad Camp to bounce this off of, I invite you and your group to chile supper Saturday night.  The guide (Jacob) is invited also- hope he will read this and offer up tips on how to clear the ranch of those nuisance hogs.  Looking forward to a good time.  Steve

Thank you and we all look forward to meeting up.  Don't hold it against my buddies (they aren't traditional hunters despite my best efforts).

My number is (314) 566-8290.  Derrick
