Thanks everyone! I'm very blessed to live where I do. I can be in the Elk woods almost out my front door. This year however the Elk were a little harder to find than in the past. The drought has them in pockets and you are either "in them" or no where near them.
After hunting hard for a week and not finding Elk in the usual haunts, it was time to head into steep and deep. It was a good decision, as the first day I chased a good bull up the mountain until they left me behind. Chasing Elk at 50 years old is not as easy as it was 20 years ago! I get left behind a lot!
A couple of more days went by with a little action here and there but no close calls. I was learning where they were and what they were doing though. Or so I thought. I was hunting with my brother-in-law and my son-in-law, really trying to get them into their first bow killed Elk. We headed up the road just before daylight. There are a few places that I like to stop and glass or listen. At the very first stop we were glassing when a Bull bugled.....close! Almost too close!
So I'm thinking this probably wont work, as we made more noise than I thought we could get away with getting ready to go after them. we had to wait for it to get to legal light and I kept waiting to hear him round up his cows and start up the mountain. As I waited and the Elk kept talking from nearby I started to get my hopes up. Finally it was time to see what would happen. Slipping through the Aspens, we could hear a lot of Elk moving. we'd only gone 50 yards when a couple of cows ran across an opening 80 yards up the hill. I wasn't sure if we had spooked them or why they were running, it didn't take long to find out though as a nice 6x6 stepped into very and bugled at them.
He stood there looking around for a minute or so then he moved after the cows. there was a kind of a "knob" between us and the elk, and when he went behind it I took off at a run. I ran about 50 yards and nocked and arrow. At the same time the cows came around the knob at 30 yards or so, but lower than we were. this basically put us between the bull and these cows.
Knowing this was a perfect opportunity, I belted out a bugle. At this point the Bull lost it! He screamed and it sounded like a landslide was coming down on us. I expected the bull to come out a bit farther than he did and that way one of the boys could get a shot. Instead he came in close, wanting to shoulder me off as he gathered the cows up. At 15 yards I came to full draw and made good on all the practice I've put in this year!
I love Elk hunting. I also love sharing Elk hunting. Both my Brother-in-law and Son-in-law got shots later in the week. It's tough being green though and they both missed. They loved every second of it though!
Awesome Bull!
Heck of a story to go with it too.
Thanks for sharing.
Great story and an awesome bull, congrats. A bull like that at 15 yards must be a heck of a rush. I don't know if I could keep it together.
Great bull buddy!
