My dad taught me everything I know about woodsmanship, not just hunting, but identifying trees, wildflowers and knowing the different species of birds, he carried the pocket books on each of these topics in the field. He taught me to read and actually use a compass. He taught me how to build my own bowstrings and make my own arrows. My dad taught me how to shoot a Recurve and sharpen broadheads. Because of him I can use a fly rod, I have enough flies to last me a lifetime, of course he tied them all.
He only has 2 recurve bows, both Bear Super Kodiak recurves, both 65lb@28, one was his main bow the other was simply a backup in case he needed it, his main Bear recurve was nicknamed "Meatpole" due to the amount of deer he killed with it. He only used Bear razorheads because "they worked". He never knew anything about EFOC, he only knew his arrows flew straight and when he hit a deer or turkey "where you're supposed to" they worked perfectly.
He gave up on commercial camo a long time ago when Mossy Oak quit offering Bottomland, he just started wearing plaids and greens and browns, he invested in Filson wool and always preached the benefit of wearing quality wool.
I've learned a lot from him....
My Dad had a series of strokes over three days that have changed his life forever, he has been in the hospital since June 27th, he may never walk again or be able to take care of himself....
I have decided to honor him this upcoming deer season, I am going to go without the use of commercial camo. I would use one of his bows except the weight is too heavy for my elbow to take. But I plan on using Bear Razorheads as well (because they work!)
I've attached a couple pics of his bows...the first pic is "meat pole"[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3]

Sorry to hear about your father's ailments. Good luck this season. I can tell you have a special relationship with your dad, one many kids are not fortunate to have.
One of the best posts I've seen on here in a long time.
Thanks for sharing your Dad with us.
I lost mine about 20 years ago, and my Mom about a month ago. Hang on to every moment you can. He may not be able to go hunting with you, but he can still teach you something valuable.
Thanks for the pics of his bows.
I also hunt with old Bear bows and Bear Greenies.(because they work)
Superb post...! Keep us informed as season progresses. My Dad started me in this archery-bowhunting lifestyle fourty plus years ago. I am honoring him this hunting season by bowhunting with a 1970-1972 Hoyt Pro Medalist Super Hunter made in St. Louis at Hoyt Archery when my dad was there as Earl's general manager.
We could use a crying emoji.
I will be pulling for you this season. A nice tribute to your father. Meatpole looks like a sweet bow.
Kenny, that's a helluva tribute to your father or anyone. Good for you. Praying for a positive outcome and good luck this season.

Really neat post. Thanks so much for sharing. Prayers for your dads healing.
I also had a similar story about my pop and I honor him in the same way. Be sure and to visit your dad often. Tell him tales of your hunts AND ask for forgiveness. I didn't ask for forgiveness for the wrongs I did growing up and regret it even today after 8 years. I pray that your dad heals and that you travel the woods again one day together again.
Kenny, sorry to hear about your Dad.
I lost my mom and dad 14 months apart in 1994 and 1995.
Life hasn't been the same since.
Dad taught me hunting just as your dad did you.
Dad and I built my house when I was 19 years old.
Hunting has not been the same since I lost my dad.
Prayers for your Dad.
Roy

Very nice, prayers sent
I'm sorry to hear of your father's ill health. It sounds like he knew his stuff and has passed much of that knowledge on to you. It is good that you recognize all he has done for you and that you now wish to honor him. Sounds like a good father has raised a good son.
Sorry to hear about your father. My father started me fishing when I was very young and I stuck with it till now. I'm now seventy-six. He bought me my first shotgun and 22 rifle when I turned sixteen. My father wasn't an active hunter but because of him I continue hunting to this day. Dave Paradowski

Thanks for taking the time to tell your tale. My dad didn't hunt, but my mom's brother introduced me to the outdoors. I hope Box Call 68 gets to read this, mebbe it'll alter his viewpoint a bit...
Sorry to hear about your dad, but love the tribute. Good luck this fall!! And prayers up for your family as well.
A good father and hunter, what else could you ask for....
Good for you Kenny...good luck with it this season
A thoughtful tribute indeed. Looks like Pop's a staunch Bear fan with Super K and Springarm full of razor heads.
Great post, best wishes to your dad. Obviously it was important to you, and him to spend that time together. Cherish the memories.
I too have a similar story about my dad. He was my mentor, hero and about everything else that was good. To this day I wear something of his every time in the woods and his spirit is always with me. Spend as much time with your dad that you can. I was at my dads side when he passed and his last words to me was" Its ok son I am going to bowhunting heaven". He passed away on the first day of WV bow season.
Thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers, sadly my dad has passed away, this will be my first bow season without him, I plan on not just honoring, him in the woods, but also honoring him outside the woods. He taught me so much and I am passing those things on to my kids. I was able to speak at his funeral and I ended with this...."Dad in heaven may the bucks always be rutting, may the turkeys be gobbling, may the fish be biting and may the squirrels be cutting on hickory nuts....Dad, I Love You!
May he find favor in the Lord of Hosts. Peace be unto him.
So sorry for your loss Kenny. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
