Hey folks, I'm staining my first cedars and want some ideas. I was doing a search and came across some camo type satin job some did, they were beautiful, can't find them now. If ya'll wouldn't mind please post some pics of your finished arrows!!!!
Thanks!
Here are some super-stealthy camo jobs I made for a recent hunt.
The main shaft is an aniline stain, then I stained the crown with Minwax, and sprayed the cap with hot pink enamel. I think it was enamel...I dunno. Some spray can from Home Depot.

Before fletching.

Killdeer
what did you use to draw those feathers on
Just a Sharpie. I am looking for something finer. Maybe I can get some bowyers to tell me what they use to put stats on their bows.
Killdeer
NICE ARROWS KILLDEER. I ALWAYS SEE THE STENCILS ON **** FOR BURNING STENCILS ON ARROWS. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEY ARE ANY GOOD???
Thanks Killdeer, I like the looks!

Killdeer, Nice work
KILLDEER, We like to mark up our arrows too. My son draws a deer hoof print on his arrows. I just found a super fine sharpie at Wal-Mart and it works great on the POC arrows.
BTW, Nice looking arrows.

Mark, are you kin to Ross and Honey?
Those are the quintessential traditional arrows, straight from the Golden Age! Beautiful work there.
Killdeer
them some nice looking arrows.
These are black analine stain on the shaft and Rit dye on the crown.

Not really stained, as such, but a cool effect anyway! I do these with a blowtorch! :D
Hey Killie, you may want to try a drafting lining pen. I have used them in the past and they work really well, you can get them in an assortment of sizes.

camo stain.
Cary
If you don't mind, How do you apply the stain to get that camo look????? THX Skyler
Beautiful work, Everyone!
All right, Cary, I gotta know!
I agree... how do you apply that camo stain? Those arrows look sharp!
took me several tries to get it right... still improving on it.
Walnut stain on cedar. Several coats to darken it.
Coat of clear-coat and dry. Buff with 0000 steel wool.
Take a sponge-brush with walnut stain, dab off most of it, then add the patterns you like. Note it will not soak in and may even run together. It will look like the second arrow from left when it does this and you can rotate the arrow to control how that effect looks - or - you can take a dry sponge brush and dab off the runs for another type of look (arrow furthest left is me latest version).
Let dry a day, another buff with 0000 SW, then crest and final clear dip (I am using water based clear from 3R). One more scuff for a hunting satin look.
thanks for the interest and happy to share my idea.
Cary
They have a copperheady look that I really like!
Killdeer    :archer:
Killdeer, I use a Speedball sketching pen set to write and mark on arrows and fishing poles. I use it with black or gold india ink. Other colors are available also. Dip the pin in the ink and write. It doesn't fade like the sharpies. You can get this at art suppy stores. Jim.
Dark oak stained POC's coated with three coats of polyurethane laquer.

Thanks Jim, I guess I need to find the right ink. I have dip pens and nibs all over the place.

Killdeer, I have also used whiteout with the nibs and dip pens to write on carbon and black fiberglass. With the india ink or white out I put a coat of clear finish over it to protect it.I have used rod builders epoxy and Minwax spar urathane over it. Works fine. Jim.
I've always stained my arrows. I think it sets 'em off better as well as bringing out the cresting work. Here is a few of my past dozen...
These are Danny Rowen's first of 2 Dozen:
And these went with me to New Zealand:

And some I made for my mate on the same trip:
What I like to do is darken the stain as you get closer to the point end of the shaft. Kinda makes it look like a footing.
Enjoy,
AK.
Lots of awesome arrows! You guys are truly skilled.
Here some I made last summer. I haven't been making much. Though I do have a dozen tapered POC calling to me again... :)

Auzoutdoor those a real nice, pretty hard to loose them!
KIM,
Those might be some of the greatest looking arrows I have ever seen! AWESOME
Nathan
can some one show what burnt feathers look like im about to get a feather burner
All my feathers are burned. Really, once the carbon gets brushed off the ends of the barbs, you never notice that they are burned rather than cut. You just have a shape unique to you, or like another fletch that caught your eye.
The beauty of a burner is in creating a fletch that you like, rather than using someone else's template.
Killdeer :D
WOW! These aren't just arrows, they're art. And after seeing the artistry displayed here, you can be sure that you won't be seeing mine anytime soon.
Not envy, just pure admiration. They're the very essence of traditional archery in my book. Thanks to all for sharing them.
Here's a set of tapered POC with feathers I burned with a Young burner I purchased here on the TG classifieds. Before buying a burner, I used a chopper. They are stained with Minwax Red Oak.

Here's a set of hickory shafts stained with Minwax Black Walnut and white crown. Hickory doesn't stain real well, but has intreesting grain highlights with a dark stain. They have burned feathers as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v415/wapitihunter/Bows%20and%20Arrows/DSCN0561.jpg[/IMG]
They weigh about 100 grains with broadhead attached and I'll hopefully shoot them with my 82# Wapiti Spike T/D longbow while hunting elk this fall.

Green leather dye (Fiebing)under fletch laq, love how the grain comes through.

Hello Gary, :wavey:
Yeah, I guess they would match that Mikuta pretty well, wouldn't they! Problem is they shoot nicely out of a longbow I made so I don't think they'll be heading south anytime soon. :p
Nice to hear from you. I hope you're getting plenty of mileage out of old "Autumn Wind."
Dave
Woww...those are gorgeous. Killy...those are plum purtiful! Ours always look like tomato stakes. Countrygirl on Tom's sign in.

Very nice jobs you did!
toxophilus84, would you mind to tell something more about the bow? Is it a Bear Kodiak or Super Kodiak? How old is your fellow?
Hi,
It's a 1965 Bear Kodiak, 53#@28" 60"AMO. It's in almost pristine condition & belonged to my father-in-law, when he passed away in 1988 I got the bow. I had it out tonight at the local 3-D range/club that I belong to.
It still shoots like a young'un!
Killdeer, Higgins waterproof ink and a fountain pen works well

Do you find that stain color on the shaft interferes with looking for blood or other sign after the shot?

I'll toss a few of mine in here. Regular stains, like Minwax, seem to bring out the rift in a shaft better than the dyes, but I like the bright dyes for a crown.

Trepil,
Over in the "How To" forum there is a post by Derek (Bard1)on how to splice feathers. There are a lot of other good posts there on all kinds of things. Here is the direct link:

I made some spliced feathers for these shafts but din't think the crest came out as good as I wanted. So put some plain janes on.
Thanks a lot Ray!
Thanks, Trepil. There are a bunch of nice arrows in this thread.

I got some arrows from Fletcher, I already busted 4 nocks and an arrow. These are arrows are basic, but straight as hell. Awesome best wood arrows I have ever shot.

I just finished these. I usually use a Minwax stain and then dip the crown. But I'm liking the idea of just dipping the crown with a stain....

tried to splice feathers fo the first time. Was easier than I expected, but I can see that I have a litle more work on the finishing details. By the way, this is the colors of the Norwegian flag, so these arrows will be real patriots:)

I just finished some Surewood douglas fir shafts in 80#-85# spine weight. I used a darker stain that really brought out the grain in these. The pictures just don't do them justice though. I have gone to 4 4" feathers and really love them! Better arrow flight and much quieter than the 3 5" shields I was using. Surewood! Check them out! I have been happy with the Minwax stains. This one is English Chestnut. I usually use Cherry which is a softer tone.
I made these early this year. Tapered POC shafts from Wapiti Archery. They are 50-55# spine with a weight of ~500 grains.
These have green analine on the crown and a light tan Rit on the shaft.
