After 15 years I drew a Montana Bull moose tag. My hunting district starts in the mountains and tapers down to high country swampy grass lands with willow bottoms. From the people I have talked to the Mountains tend to hold the moose during the rut. Lots of big meadows and creeks up there. Anyone have any calling strategies they like? I have watched plenty of youtube videos on cow and bull calling, raking etc. But this will be my first time! Help get me excited for what is most likely once in a lifetime tag.

I've only been a MT resident for a few years so I cannot add anything of value in the way of strategies but I can surely appreciate what an exciting time it must be for you!

Which unit did you draw? Same tactics that have worked in AK for me seem to work in parts of region 3.
I drew a moose tag after 34 years in 212 last year and never saw a moose in two weeks of scouting and 28 day's of hunting during the season.
Awesome. Unit? I climb a lot in the bitterroots 240. I have spied tons from the south facing walls. let me know if you want some hotspots I've seen.
Moose unit 326 which is the north west area of the big hole. From lost trail pass to Wisdom on the north side of the road. I also have a friend with a 240 moose tag so if you see or have seen any bulls in 240 this year I'm up for info there too. Walt that's pretty rough! I'm worried about that with the wolves.
based on my idaho moose hunt i would find the wolves first then go some where else...at least one major drainage away if at all possible...
ill bet the locals in wisdom have a good idea where to find the wolves and will be willing to share that info but may not want to share what they know about the moose.
moose grunt alot so use ur ears a lot...voice grunting with cupped hands into the ground works well for me...i called in two nice ones last year while elk hunting with a hot cow elk whine...could have killed either one at less than 20 yards...give it a shot!
Standard cow calling worked OK for me on several WY moose hunts, but what really drew the Bulls in when they hung up out of range was raking with a small moose shed antler or scapula. That sound really carries when it was calm.
Get Mike Mitten's video and study it. He has some great info that will apply to moose all over. I've called them in easily in Idaho and Colorado while elk hunting. Had four different bulls called into our camp a couple of years ago in CO.
Cow calling worked best.
