Title: Schafer Silvertip Question
Post by: ChadMR82 on August 28, 2018, 01:58:38 PM
Im ready to own another custom.  I have owned a couple Bob Lees and other bows but this time I want a Schafer Sillvertip TD recurve.  I have always wanted one and enjoy their rich history.  I have a 27.25" draw length and the recommended length according to the silvertip website is 58-60".  I typically shoot 62" bows including my Bob Lee and find a 62" perfect.  A 62" silvertip is recommended for draw lengths 29" plus.   So my question, will I be giving up too much performance with my 27.25" draw if I were to order a 62" or should I just follow the recommendation and get a 60"?  If you guys have a similar or slightly longer draw and tell me the 60" is smooth all the way through then I am convinced.  I appreciate the input.

Call them and talk to Beth and Dave no friendlier folks have you ever talked to over the phone!

I have two of his. My draw is lik yours 27.5 but went with 64". If there is a performance issue I cant see it?

For certain I am not an expert though but Beth and Dave are!

Thank you, I sent them an email this morning.  Just nice to hear from people with first hand experience like yourself.  Im leaning toward the 62" bow but will know more once I talk to Dave.  This is a huge investment for me and I just want to make sure I get the best combination as possible.

I know that people who like long bows are hard to change their mind!!!
I have 11 Silvertips with a 29” dl my preferred bow is the 58” with a 15” riser that on the finger is equivalent to a 60” 17” riser. Also @ 64# they are smooth without any stack. But everyone has his own.

I prefer the 58" as well.

I’m pretty sure from your description, you’re not going to get a 58”, but you should seriously consider a 60”.  If all you were going to do is shoot 3D or targets, you might be happier with a 62” or even a 64”, because they would be slightly smoother to draw and slightly less finger pinch.  However, if you intend to hunt with them, every inch you cut off the length will give you more shot options in tree stands, blinds, and the brush.  If you plan to do both, a 60” would be a good compromise.  Besides, you already have very fine 62” takedown recurves.  Why get in a rut?

A bow will perform best when drawn close to stacking.  Thus a 60” bow will perform better when drawn to 27.25” than a 62” bow.  That doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be more accurate with a 60” bow, but you should get a few more fps out of it.

A bow will perform best when drawn close to stacking.  Thus a 60” bow will perform better when drawn to 27.25” than a 62” bow.

And a 58" will perform better than a 60", which is why I have a 58" with 15" riser.

I draw just under 30", and I prefer the 60" length. Especially with the 15" riser.

I draw just a shade over 27. I have two tips. A 60” with a 17” riser and a 58” with a 15” riser. Both are great shooters. I am not sure I can see a difference in “shootability” with a draw length under 28”. They are both smooth as can be.

I have a 27” draw.  I have a 60” tip recurve.  To be honest i feel I get slightly more performance from my 60” bow than I do my 64” recurve at the same weight. But, I like hunting and shooting more with my 62-64” bows.

The tip I own is 66@30( I got it used and draw 27) very smooth and only 60amo for a 30 inch draw>>>---> :scared:

I’ve had a few tips and draw 27” and I always found a 60” bow to work really well but think a 58” would have probably been a better choice performance wise

For those of you interested I heard back from Beth and Dave.  They suggested whatever length I wanted and that there is only about a 2 fps difference each length you jump up.  I will probably go with a 60" and send them from veneers from The Wood Vault.  The 62" would be the smoothest but this is a hunting bow that will see some 3D late in the summer gearing up for the season.  I use my ILF right most of the year for 3D.  Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it.

I'm just jealous that you're ordering a new Silvertip!

If you lived a bit closer you could shoot mine. I have a 27" DL and still prefer my 62. I have a 60 also but it isn't even close in the smoothness of draw and the 58 even more so. I am a tree stand hunter primarily and don't have any issues maneuvering it, but that's just my opinion. If one of them had to stay and the others go, the 62 would stay for sure.

I second the 62" I draw 28" and shoot a 64" bow. I feel the longer bows are more comfortable and accurate.

Chad my vote for you is 60".

I draw 29 and I prefer 62"/19" riser or 60"/17" riser.  In your case 60" with either riser length ought to work well.  58"/15" would certainly work but youd be limiting your sight window.

I've only owned a couple of Silvertips so I'm certainly no expert but I prefer the 62" with my 28" draw.  I don't deny that the 60" bow might gain a few fps but I felt like the draw was noticeably smoother with the 62".  Also, I remember the actual grip size to vary with amo length and I found the grip on the 62" bow to be a little longer and more comfortable.

I own Silvertips from 56" to 62". I have a 29" draw. I prefer my 58" with 14" riser. But i shoot them all equally well and will take any of them on a hunt.

The Rocket, only a handful of lucky guys own such a great bow, the others can just dream of it,LOL

why not order with 2nd set of limbs(it's only :biglaugh: money) 58or 60 inch for hunting and your lower weight 62 inch  for 3d?
