Title: Nice a.m. Boar.....
Post by: SAM E. STEPHENS on August 03, 2018, 07:29:39 PM
With my elk trip getting closer and still testing new gear I figured the best test is shooting critters. Got up to ranch yesterday for a 3 day weekend of hunting hogs and any exotics that might show themselves in this heat. Got up early this morning and headed out with my Ember longbow and a quiver of cedar arrows to see what the day would offer. I stalked down by the edge of the river with a good wind and not long into it I saw a few coons messing around. Up ahead of them I could see another one in some tall grass and as I got closer that coon was actually a sleeping hog. He was facing dead away from me and sound asleep I couldn’t get to either side without making noise so I eased up around 20 or so yards and waited. Not sure what happened but he picked his head up then got his feet under him and I could tell he was about to bolt to the right. I had my arrow on the string and was waiting on him to make a move and he did just that. His path was a fast quartering angle from my left to my right headed for the river. The arrow looked good and all hell broke loose for about 3 seconds then all was whisper quiet. I stood stone still for 15 minuets hoping to hear a clue but could hear nothing. Like I said everything looked good on the shot but in the low light I figured I would give him a while to lay up so I headed off to hunt another area for a few hours. The rest of my morning was a good one sighting 6 whitetail bucks , all were in velvet an one is going to be a really nice buck. So I got back to the ranch house and woke my buddy up cause he was sleeping in today and told him my story. We got to the spot went over the story again and started looking and only found tracks and no blood. I thought I spotted him up ahead in an open area about 90yds away and when I walked over it was just a black stump.
When I turned to walk back I hear ( here he is , and he looks pretty big ) he had only went about 75yds and looked to have died on his feet. The arrow had taken him at the perfect angle quartered away but did not exit. We took a bunch of pictures then got to work skinning him out , I was a very happy bowhunter. He looked to be in his prime as a boar but not a old war horse. He has nice cutters not broken up but they are not big thick ones either just a real nice solid hog. We got all the meat loaded up and headed back to the ranch house and had fresh pork and eggs for an early lunch. The bow was one of my Galaxy Embers that is 51@30 and the arrow was a 600gr cedar with a Ribtek head. I’m back in a tree stand now with the same bow but with some Surewoods with a Tuffhead single bevel on the end that come in at 675gr. Hope to get a few more shots in the next 2 days so I’m going to get still and see what will come out and play...

That's one fine hog Sam! Congrats! Maybe they taste different in Texas, but any boar that size that I've ever tried to cook smelled like someone took a whiz in the skillet whenever it was being cooked :biglaugh:

Be safe and don't over do it out there Sam. Got to save some of that JuJu for those wapiti's!
