I started this new project a few days ago. It is going to be representative of a buffalo hunt that will be donated to the Tenn. Classic raffle table next spring. It is paper mache like the others I did in the past. The rider will be shooting a 5 curve sinew backed horn bow. I want this project to be as authentic as I can make it.
Roy, if this thread is inappropriate please delete it. Here are a few pics...

As long as he has a bow, I'm fine with it:)
-
He'll definitely have a bow.
Thanks Roy.
-
Can't wait to see how that turns out Pat. You have always amazed me with your talents and attention to detail
-
Thanks Josh. I'm looking forward to seeing where this will take me. It will be a long, slow process as the past ones have so please be patient.
-
looks awesome so far- your sense of ratio and proportion is quite excellent sir!
-
Very nice. You have some artistic ability, Pat! Jawge
-
Love your projects - thanks for sharing your progress Pat.
-
Thanks guys.

Got a little more done. Got the basic shape for the horse and rider, next will be paint and cloths. Just got the preliminary shape of the bison done. Will add the legs, shape the hips, hump and head. Here are a few pics...

Nice job, Pat.
-
You are very much the creative artist.
Looks good.
-
That's really impressive! I like it!
-
Thanks guys. I'll keep posting as things progress.
Someone asked me to document some of the processes kind of like a build along. I'll try to get pics of that too.
I had a suggestion for a title for the piece..."Tetanka", the Lakota word for the American bison. I'll research the Lakota clothing, decorations, accessories, etc. to make the piece as realistic as possible.
-
Here's a little behind the scene...the bison is made with styrofoam eggs of different sizes pinned together with floral sticks then shaped and covered with strips of news paper and tissue with diluted white glue. The toilet paper tube stuffed with plastic grocery bags, wire legs attached and other cardboard pieces covered with tissue paper and white glue is how the horse was formed.
My wife is an artist and has been doing paper mache figures for many years. She has been my technical adviser with a good eye for perspective, shapes and color. The ideas and execution are mine. Here is a pic...

Super Cool

Very neat pat.
Looking forward to the finished product.
-
I put legs on the bison today and will fill out the hips and legs tomorrow. When that dries I'll post pics. Almost ready to start some detail work soon, like cloths, fur, skin, etc. At some point I will make the Plains style horn bow and arrows.
-
Well, here is the bison with legs. Still have to fill them out some more then add the fur and horns. Will get the horse and rider filled out a bit more then make cloths and horse tack. This is about how they will be set up on the final piece.
Roy, I cut a piece of osage today and chased a ring. Will shape the 5 curve bow and add a sinew backing and sinew string and arrows. Will post pics of that when done.
...a few more pics...

Looks like top limb may be a little stiff
J/K. I have great respect for the arts. And you sir are very talented.
-
It will straighten up once I add the sinew.
-
Cool Pat.
What's the draw weight?
The horse gonna get a tail?
Ah a Fisher wood stove, they don't come any better than Fisher..
-
Enough weight to punch that bison, Roy.
The tail is getting it's fuzzies.
We've depended on that fisher wood stove for most of our winter heat for 40 years.
-
They are nice.
I have a Jensen wood burner with a water jacket in it.
I have it piped in parallel with my hot water oil furnace system.
Does a heck of a job.

Got a bit more done before the painting begins. There is still a lot more detail work to be done but the initial painting really helps me see what else is needed. These are the last pics before the painting begins...

Looking good. :)

Shedd, here are a few close ups. The last pic I have painted part of the bison which adds to the detail. This is only the beginning of the painting and detail work...

This will be on the raffle table at the Tennessee Classic next spring at Twin Oaks.
-
Very very nice, Pat...
Be very quiet, there's ah deer standing out there in your yard:)
-
Oh wow. The detail work is incredible. The bow looks spot on
-
Roy, the deer have already eaten everything in the yard. No need for them to come back til spring. :knothead:
B, the osage bow has 3 strands of sinew on the back.
Looks like buffalo tongue for supper.
Thanks guys. I've enjoyed these projects. It takes me a long time to get them done but there is no rush and it does take time for the glue to dry and a lot of sessions of wet glue. I also like doing the details and making them as accurate as popular.
-
What's the raffle tickets cost, Pat?
I'll send ya some $$ and you can enter me...
-
Excellent work Pat
The details are great!!!
-
just gonna throw my life in the dumpster and hope to be more like Pat in the next one ...
-
Very cool!!
-
Roy, I missed the deer target in the pic. :dunno: It has become a bird house, not my idea.
I think the raffle tickets will be $2 each.
Thanks guys.
-
Wow......now I know why I don't have any talent. You have it all and a bunch of other people's too :o
