Title: Making a new riser
Post by: Lewis Brookshire III on June 15, 2018, 10:06:52 PM
I am starting a new riser for my goto bow. I made that Osage riser and four sets of limbs about 6 years ago. I figured it’s about time I made a new riser for some of the other limbs. We will see how this goes....its my first in quite some time so I am going to go slow. The Osage is 15” but I am going to try a 13” for this new one. Big thanks to KennyM for the Bocote block!

Bocote is one of my favorite woods.  I think it's gonna look amazing.

That Osage darkened so nicely. Can't wait to see the bocote. I like that forward handle design too.

What is the length of the new riser?

I really like the design.

Finally getting to work on this one. I have limbs on and will start final shaping the riser soon. Feels good so far. Will be 54” and should end up around 48@28”.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/7d612e2c9e1b0f18b1a4e11e6fc0d337.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/69c260e1d0ac25e91cee4d4e35bbb351.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/bcf74a213afb01419466a0584acd2a7a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/810c69add4da44607e2ea94ab2018e62.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/dc4db26e2532dd3f2c074e351a173fe9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/e46c5c1a5b2f265e0a1927ce69367314.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/675a0dc09809534a135053c5716bdb22.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181104/daf101405e05e9b018031e94607cc044.jpg)

That shorty riser looks cute.   Can you tell what length the working limb is..?  That is from the end of the riser to  the string nock.

I don't want to run the topic into the ditch, but I just gotta ask;  Is there a standard limb pad angle for various riser lengths?

I have only made a handful of limbs and risers so I am not sure about a “standard” but this one is 23 degrees.

Good looking riser, it looks great the way it is without finish, should really pop with finish.

Finally finished up this bow....it only took 2 years, lol. 54” 3pc Static tip Recurve 48@26”. Solid Bocote riser, limbs are Bamboo cores with Bocote veneers. Osage overlays on the limb butt and tips. Shoots like a dream.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/da521675c744757ec78e545a29b5c631.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/83eb9a42dbabe079c674faa40bc106d9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/f3ca336dd528e3c51559f349e1bf40e5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/246a68c7cadda246958839e77c2bd39c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/f52b39cb44f5324f2de63a3f9a62df36.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/8af206becf79b4125c38fc3ec00aec6e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/8cffbba258339192aa45d7a15d11c385.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/55de85c20637fa927664aad807320caf.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/cc13df290ba0cc53b150054cc1bc4011.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/c3ff45a6c540ea6de94d33906167d525.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181124/b2a6a44088947e5c79aa1b28d6c5fd21.jpg)

Finish really brought that riser to life. Very nice!!!

Don’t know that I’ve ever seen bocate have such straight grain as the off side of that riser.

That is exactly the style I would like to try to build for my project this off season, in the same specs!

That looks good. The only thing I see you may or may not have trouble with is the limb butt overlays. You would be surprised at how much the limb flexes right off the riser. So keeping the overlays shorter will prevent them from popping up over time.

Thanks, I will keep an eye on them. Actually I am not very happy with them and might sand them off at some point anyway.

I make mine at least .030 and thinner is better and pre shape the fade area before gluing. and smooth on is the best.
