Title: Need some collective wisdom on first tri-lam TURKEY PHOTO ADDED!
Post by: OkKeith on April 16, 2018, 02:34:45 PM: Ok... as soon as I get turkey hunting out of the way I am gonna get everything together and get a bow built for MOJAM. I'm thinking just a simple D-style longbow, straight back or maybe set back at the handle slightly. I have a Martin ML-10 that I love so I may do a similar bow build in a tri-lam. I have only ever worked with Osage self bows and the occasional Hickory backed Osage so need some input to the brain on this tri-lam thing. I know that an all wood bow will never be quite as "snappy" as a fiberglass bow but I haven't really ever been greatly excited about the performance of Hickory as a back so I am looking at Bamboo. I'm thinking a B/O/O stack.

I had several posts marked and a few PMs saved with length and taper formulas but I don't think they made it across (No big deal).

I have ape arms... so a 31" draw and looking for 50lbs at that draw length. What is the collective wisdom on bow length and the tapers for a bow 1" to 1.5" wide at the fades? Riser/Fade length? Tri-lam is a new thing for me so any advice is more than welcome. When I get my poop all in one sack I will be hollering at KennyM for pieces and parts.

1 1/4" wide at flares, hold that width out 6 inches more.
Then straight taper to 1/2" wide at tips.
Osage Belly lam 1/4" thick parallel.
Red Elm Core lam 3/16th thick at riser, tapered to 3/32nd at tips.
Boo 1/8th thick at riser, tapered to 1/16th at tips.
Handle 4" grip area 3/4" wide.
Cut the boo to the exact shape you want the bow first.
Leave the belly and core lams 1 3/4" wide.
This bow is being drawn to 31.5" @ 50#.
I made it to the specs above.

I am coming to you live and in person from the turkey woods right now. Had 2 good birds working hot off the roost and they fizzeled out somewhere just beyond view. I have drank all my water and ate all my snacks... time for Second Breakfast!

Post by: OkKeith on April 21, 2018, 01:37:02 PM: Well... We got my wife Lisa her bird Thursday morning before the wind started to blow 25+ mph. It did die down this morning about daybreak, when the rain began. I still have high hopes for myself a bird this afternoon or tomorrow morning. I also have a four day hunt planned next week out in the sagebrush country of the Oklahoma Panhandle. I think i will dedicate my first tri-lam as a turkey bow. Maybe a brown and green dye job.

I'm not complaining about rain for North Central Oklahoma. We need it. It's been drier than a popcorn fart.
