This was last year. Went scouting a few times, then I had just enough time to go out twice in the whole season.
I heard the buck snorting at me, just before I got to where the camera was. Wonder if he heard me or saw the camera. Got a doe on camera as well
-
Now, what in the Heaven's name was that? Maybe a gator? Still not sure...

Man, I'm loving this topic! STill can't choose the best pic of yours, guys! Bears, a fox with its prey, even a mountain lion! Keep posting! :clapper:

Enlarge the pic and you can see a stray dog that has been running my place for the last two months. He has a wild white rabbit in his mouth that I have been getting pics of for 7 months or so. What are the odds to get this shot?
Oh yah, it makes me mad.

John; Re the doe pix with the natural aiming point. I think it's possible its was shot with an expandable broadhead on a very lightweight arrow. Very little penetration. What else would have caused such a wound?
-
Never thought about it as a wound (although it is in the right place).

Jim... what made you pick the spot where the pics of the moose, lion, skunk and bob were taken?
-
I really like this thread a lot. Pictures is the only way some of us get to see a number of the animals, except at a zoo. I'm not sure I really want to meet a cougar (or a grizzly) in person, though.
-
Jim... what made you pick the spot where the pics of the moose, lion, skunk and bob were taken?
[/quote Charlie,it's a main trail up a canyon bottom.Behind the camera is a timbered hill and thick brush.A few yards up the trail is a big rock outcropping that narrows it even more.
The camera is trained on a bear rub tree,to the left of the big fir tree. The rub tree is a cedar, which they like and it leans into the trail, which they also seem to prefer. It's probably a plus that the trunk curves perfectly to fit a bear's back.I found that tree 24 years ago and it gets hit hard every year from when they come out of the den to the end of the rut,in late June.Multiple bears rub there, from big, dominant boars to sows with new cubs.
Behind the rub tree is a very steep, timbered hill.At the bottom is a seep where animals sometimes water.Occasionally in November, there is a little elk hunter traffic there and sometimes pack horses but the rest of the year,no people.Sadly, like many of my camera locations,it's a poor hunting spot because it's too thick,up and down mountain thermals and swirling winds. The camera works, wind or not.I never sit there though I do slow down when I move through there.
It's basically a narrowed down spot on a prominent trail,in the bottom of a good, timbered canyon that has a few watering spots and small meadows.Western hunters like to move and glass large open areas and this place is no good for that. Most don't have the patience to sit and wait, when nothing is happening for long periods of time and you can't see long distances.I grew up in the East and am drawn to this spot and enjoy the solitude of it.
-
Very cool! I see the method to your madness. Thanks for the explanation. :campfire:
-
JimB >>>>------------------------> :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
-
Usually it's more madness than method,Charlie.
I did put in another camera on a spot that I haven't for a few years. It's a water trough in a very tight, brushy, little canyon. Some years it is bone dry, some Summers,it holds water for a couple months.Right now it is full and running over with clear, cold water so I'm keeping a camera there till it dries up.There was fresh elk sign that wasn't there,3 days before. It's even tighter, with less visibility than the other place so I don't hunt it but it's a good spot for pictures. It should be good for bull elk, mulie does, bears and possibly a lion or bobcat.I'll let it alone for awhile and we'll see what happens.I'm seeing way fewer bears so far this year and haven't a clue why.Plenty of feed, decent weather and I'm sure they haven't been pressured.

That's a mountain goat at the gate, first one on a trail cam!
-
Great photos as always Jim. Is that goat at a fairly low elevation?
-
Yes Charlie. It is.It is in the bottom of a canyon at the base of the mountain, but still about 5,500".Usually,they have moved up to the top of the mountain by now, which is up to 10,000',but not always. There are cliffs on each side and a beautiful, little mountain stream, just off the road.If they are in these foothills, they come down to water.I saw one on the cliffs, just above the road where he is,in late May.I thought he'd be up in the high country by now but this is probably him.

Cmane07, he is a 3.5yo. I won"t be chasing him until next year.
I was thinking he was 3 but didn't want to say with only the frontal view. That's awesome, I love a big 8.
-
That would be a tough one to let walk here in Pa., although with antler regs. and guys getting more selective seems to be a lot more older buck.
-
I would say if you have control of his roaming ground......... I would let him go at least another year. If he is 3.5 (might be correct but it all depends on his food and genetics) how good can he be at 4.5 or more..........
Just my thoughts.
-
He certainly can roam, especially during the rut, but he was on my place all of the late season. Just because I start chasing him next year doesn't mean I will get him. I just like the cat and the mouse game as they get older. Plus seeing them get to their potential. When I grew up in PA, it was all public land hunting, and everyone shot whatever they saw, and the average harvest age was 18 months. Tough to see mature bucks back then.

Lol yes sir! They are a pic of a pic. I loaded them on my phone in the past but the device I use for my iPhone isn’t working so I just look at them on a laptop and take a pic. It makes the quality of the pic terrible to post but the boys love gathering around to review pictures. It’s fun! I should probably email them to myself and just save the pictures on my phone that way.

Roy nice video and nice buck, I know I'm always excited this time of year but there sure seems to be some nice headgear in Pa. this year.

Ya he's not bad.
Ya should have seen some of the bucks around here about 5 years ago, before that EHD hit our herd and wiped out 75% of them.
-
Wow...some nice bucks and bulls! :clapper:
I've never killed a bear and hoping to this fall. I have several moving by my stand site pretty regularly. I'm learning all I can about field identification. Not the best photo, but do you bear-guys think this is a sow or a boar?

I'm not a bear guy but I'd guess a boar based on the lack of cubs. But again, I'm not expert. Just making a semi-educated guess.

-
Here is that same bear,in June.I know I recognized that snear! The color change is due to the new,Fall hair coming in.He will be that color when he comes out of the den in Spring and will gradually lighten through the Spring and Summer.

Have been chasing this elusive buck. Pic is from last week in October of 2017. Farmers have seen him crossing over to the property twice in the past month.
-
WOW :o
I don’t think I could punch my buck tag on anything else knowing there was even a slight chance of encountering that buck.
Good luck Friend!!
-
Friend, If I ever saw that buck while in my tree stand, I would put my safety harness around my neck and jump off.... that buck is on steroids...
-
This magnificent buck is travelling a very wide range and not a resident of my farm. Many have seen him such as in their driveway or in their backyard of this rural area. The fact that he is still being around is astonishing. Just seeing him from a blind would be quite an honor.
I have taken 124 passes on solid shot opportunities on bucks in the last three seasons. It is nearing the time to loose an arrow.
-
good luck with that one (friend)
he looks like a deer farm freak...

I have done that too. Seen a tremendous buck below my house years ago and I spent the next 3 years waiting on him.

Friend, Wow! How wide of a range would you estimate? Has he been seen in daylight?

Matt...would estimate the goodin has been sighted within a 3 1/2 mile range.

Friend, what an amazing whitetail buck!I wish you luck.
