Title: How I get the labels off my carbons
Post by: Slappy on March 19, 2008, 01:51:00 AM
I don't like the way a label looks sticking out below my cap wraps, so I was happy to stumble onto this easy way to remove them.  They seem to be made of a much softer material than the underlying arrow finish, so I just scrape them off with a butter knife or the back of a pair of scissors.  It only requires light pressure and seems to do no damage to the arrows' finish.  This works for Easton Axis arrows, I've not tried it on any others.

The above post is correct. Get yourself some fingernail polish remover. I use a little piece of one of those dish scrubbers on the arrow after applying the fingernail polish remover. The decal comes right off with no problem.

The fingernail polish I had access to must not have had acetone as the active ingredient.  I'll buy some that does and try that method next time.  I wonder what the labels are made of, that they dissolve in acetone when the arrow finish does not?

When I used carbon back in my wheelie days, the GT label would rub off just using denatured alcohol while prepping arrow for cresting/fletching.

Acetone worked good for me.

Alcohol and #0000 steel wool worked when I tried it...then I wipe with wet water cloth to remove residue before trying to paint...

Acetone, lacquer thinner or MEK. MEK is the strongest and works the best. It is also the most toxic.

I use the same arrows, Axis 500, I just use a razor blade, scraped very gently, and use denatured alcohol and they came off just fine.  I want to use a wrap, but I may just paint them.  I like the looks of them better without the commercial.  They are great arrows.  I also use the 400's for heavier poundage.  They are very high penetrating arrow.  I've been using them for four years now.

I always use just cheap finger nail polish remover. rubs it right off. Just don't lay the cotton ball down on your coffee table, it will strip the varnish off. Found that out the hard way. Wife still gripes about that one. Tripper

OK,OK I tried the acetone route and can't quite get all the black off my GT trads....any thoughts. It leaves a shadow of the ink on the shaft..

I would NOT use acetone. Acetone Breaks donw the resin that holds teh carbon fibers together and weakens the arrow. I've been told by manufacturers to never use epoxy with carbon arrows, always use denatured alcohol. you could be leaving a weak spot on your shaft.

If you are continually getting "black stuff" then you have gone through the finish. Acetone isn't going to hurt the shaft by merely rubbing it with a rag dampened with it. Denatured alcohol is the least toxic for cleaning the shaft. Some shafts will require scraping. I have some Carbon Vapors that the label does not come off by just rubbing a solvent on it.

OK, I can answer this question with 100% success.  I take the labels off every arrow I shoot, Carbon Express, Gold Tip, and Easton.  Use GooGone Extreme, it comes in a metal can is located with the other goo gone stuff in Walmart.  Use it liberally on a paper towel and all labels come off with no problems.

Alcohol or acetone rubs the black writing off goldtip traditional arrows just fine - not sure on the black carbons.

I have been using 000 steel wool and have never had a problem. But it requires some elbow grease so if one of these ways is easier go for it
