Title: First selfbow and string
Post by: Okie 1 on March 18, 2008, 10:22:00 PM
This is my first real attempt at making a bow and flemish string. It's a 61" osage flat bow with a 14 strand D-50 string. Both have their flaws but it seems to shoot fine. I don't have a bow scale to check the weight but it should be around 45#, I'm guessing. Any comments, good or bad are welcome.

John

I should post pics, huh.

Nice work John.  Good job on your first bow. 61" is quite a challenge for your first bow isn't it?   Is that OK osage?  Cut it yourself?  I've cut several pieces of osage in the last 3 mos - finally got some staves that have what I am looking for.  I roughed them out, steamed em and clamped them to a caul, and now they are in the drying box.  Hope to get one tillered this weekend.

Nice work, John, especially for your first. Will you post a full draw pic?    Pat

Chisler, Yes it is OK osage. I actually cut it about 10 years ago and started the bow then was kind of lost and never finished it. I finnally got it out of the attic 2 weeks ago and started on it again. It has a little twist in the limbs, but I am building a caul now to try some heat on it. It also has a little hinge in the lower limb, which will probably break, but oh well I'll make another one.
Pat B, I'll try and get pics of full draw tonight.

I would like to thank all you guys and gals here.
If it weren't for all of your knowledge and helpful hints I could have never finished this.
So a big salute to all Trad Gangers.

John

I don't know squat about building a selfbow (plan to rememdy that this May at the TN Classic), but from what I can see you did a fine job on the string.  Congrats!
