Title: Which String Silencer
Post by: tradrick on March 18, 2008, 07:37:00 PM
What is a good string silencer to use.I've used cat whiskers and those yarn puffs. But am only moderatly satisfied. Its going on a longbow so its not extremly loud but it could deffinatly be quieter.I think the one I'm intrested in is Mountain Muffler. But I may have the name wrong.Where can you buy these? And are they good silencers?I also might be in need for a new bow string.Who makes some of the best fast flight strings out there. Thanks tradrick

If you change from fast-flight to B-50 dacron your bow will be ALOT quieter!!!!!

Hush Puppies from Terry Green's daughters.  They really work.....  Look up Bow Hush up above in the sponsors.

For strings is Champion Custom Bow Strings (Chad Weaver, a.k.a. LBR).  He too is a sponsor here.

I've always had good luck with rubber cat whiskers--the thing that a lot of folks don't seem to think about is your silencers can be tuned for best performance, just like your brace height.  I start with a "naked" string, find the sweet spot for the brace height, then tie the silencers on around the string so I can adjust them.  I've seen major improvements by moving the silencers up or down the string just an inch or so on some bows.

I haven't tried them yet, but I've heard a lot of good comments about Bowhush products as well.

As far as the string material, that can vary--see the thread about a bow not "liking" FF.  Some bows will be quieter with dacron, some noisier.  I shoot Dynaflight '97 on my personal bows, and get comments on a regular basis about how quiet they are.

Quieting the bow can be a combo of both the string and the silencer. My old Howatt prefers an endless loop string. Go figure. Everyone has told me "flemish are quieter". Well, not on my bow. And as far as silencers I am really impressed with Terrys Bowhush system.

I like string leeches but I dont know of many trad guys who use them. I would only use them on a bow you intend to keep strung as it seems to me they get cut in half by the string much faster if you keep stringing and unstrunging your bow.
