Title: Public land doe - The season of "Charisma" continues
Post by: BowHunterGA on September 23, 2016, 10:50:00 AM
Yesterday (09/22/2016) I hiked in on a North GA WMA looking for feeding sign. Found some fresh sign around a large red oak with acorns scattered about. No white oaks dropping but this red had decent sign, was right for the wind and the cover around it was THICK! So up a tree I went and settled in around 5pm.

At 7pm I saw 2 large does and a pair of yearlings making their way through the swampy creek bottom below me. They would eventually move on without ever coming closer than 50-60 yards. I watching them as best I could through my binos. Light was fading and the amount of cover was making it hard to track them. Then movement to my left caught my attention and a quick peek through the glasses revealed a 5th doe making her way towards me. At about 7:25pm she worked her way the the edge of a little opening made by an old abandoned roadbed. At 7:30 she stepped into the opening offering a 12 yard shot. The shot was about as perfect as I have ever made on a whitetail. Entrance was mid way up and just through the back tip of the shoulder, exit low and just behind the leg. I listened as she ran off and was confident I heard her go down 15 seconds later. I climbed down, inspected my arrow. Lots of bubbles and pinkish blood. Was sure I had a double lung hit. Only thing making this a less than perfect story is there was no blood trail to speak of. I tried my best to follow it and made it about 20 yards or so but then could not find another spec. I looked at my back trail and established a line considering where I thought she had gone down....at this point it is pitch black dark. I circled wide of the path I was confident she had taken so as to not disturb the trail if I had to come back and circled back into where I thought she had gone about 60 yards out. a couple minutes later my light hit my doe. Around an 80 yard recovery and my shot had been exactly where I expected. Backstraps on the menu this weekend!!!
