Title: 2013 Solo Mt. Goat
Post by: TDHunter on September 27, 2013, 02:12:00 AM
After killing a Mt. goat on a solo trip in 2007, I swore I'd never do it again.  It was a nasty pack down the Mountain  and  I remember feeling like a 90 year old, as I tried to get into the tub that night, everything hurt and I was moving slowly. But when you love to skulk around in Goat territory as much as I do, you are going to end up going solo once and awhile. Unfortunately my good buddy Tim "Hummer3T" couldn't make the journey this year due to an Injury,  so I headed back into our little gem of a mountain solo. Well it didn't take long to spot a goat. I was making my way to the other side of the Mt. when I looked up to see two large Billy's watching me, not more then 100m from where Tim shot his goat with me last year. I knew if they where to stay put, I'd have a great stock from the far side of the hill , as I knew the hillside very well. I kept walking quartering away from them until I went up over the top and out of sight. I watched as the standing Billy started to lay down and I knew it was go time. I dropped over the far edge of the hill and started to motor around to get below and behind the two goats. I dropped my pack and took off my boots on a steep grassy hill below the goats. I knew they were above me on a small flat near the cliff face. One step at a time, I worked my way up the hill, scanning with every step. I finally saw horn above me threw the grass and ducked down and took about five more steps and came up starting my draw on a bedded Billy 15-17 yds away. The Billy came to his feet and started to turn as I let the arrow go. I watched my pink feathers zip upwards and into the quartering away goat. The arrow entered low behind the ribs traveling on a hard forward and upward angle. The broadhead, must have ended up cutting spine as the goats back end dropped.  The other big Billy jumped up and stood and stared at me. The hit Billy took a couple of side steps dragging his back end and started to wobble . I quickly realized I left my other arrows 30 yds back with my pack. With the Billy looking like he was about to fall over,  I ducked down and ran back to grab my pack and arrows. By the time I made it back up the hill the one Billy was gone and mine was laying dead just feet from the edge of the cliff.  I quickly realized how much bigger this goat was compared to my first in 07. This beast was about the same size as Tims last year and I quickly realized how much work I had in front of me. All I can say is the fun was over!!!! no part of the trip back down to my vehicle was pleasant. In short it hurt like hell!!  It's been two days and I still hurt...................but I'm already looking forward to next year.

2013  solo Billy down!   now the work began!!

I came right down the center of that cliff below, no not smart but it was that or the long way around so over I went......very slowly.

How on earth can you consistently draw tags? And succeed none the less! Awesome job, awesome goat!

Post by: TDHunter on September 27, 2013, 12:44:00 PM
No Draw, I'm hunting an open area, general season. I just buy a tag and up I go. We have a draw system and there are Limited Entry Hunting Draws for goats, but we also have a lot of open areas up north in BC.

Jealous "muchly", I could not come this year.  Next year I will be there again (if you and the family will have me).  Man, I miss that alpine country.  Congrats again, Awesome solo accomplishment!  For those who have never tried or know hard hard this is, to do this is one thing, to do it solo is truly awesome (and maybe a little crazy).

Really nice Billy ... great pics, congrats and thanks for sharing. I have hunted them a few times in Washington but could never close the deal and now they have changed the tag draw and my chances to do it again are slim to none. The bow hunters get lumped in with all user groups.

Goat and sheep country is truly awesome ....

That thing is huge!  I love to see goat and sheep pics.  Its hard to get pics of them in the back of a truck or in the garage like a lot of lazy hunters do who are too lazy to get pics the right way.  Congrats!
