Title: Cover Scents/Scent Killer?
Post by: huntnut on March 13, 2008, 04:01:00 PM
How many of you use cover scent/scent killer?

I have used everthing from nothing to the modren type scent killer. In the past I have used stuff caller Cover-Up smells like vanilla, fox, coon urien, quail, rabbit, skunk scent, home made cedar spray from boiled cedar limbs. All have worked but I have found that my homemade stuff works the best and some quail scent on my boots, till bird season starts (had to many bird dogs track me to my setup).

homemade stuff works better, because it's fresher and the deer/game knows them smells from there area.

I've been using Cover-Up "Fresh Earth" and "Cedar Woods" for a few years now. Deer walk by me downwind at spittin' distance.

I wouldn't give you a nickle for a bottle of "scent-killer".....

I am a big believer in scent killers, on the other hand the stuff that hides odors with fresh earth and cedar has always spooked deer for me or at least made them very cautiuos. I try and remain as scent free as possible until the chasing and rut phases and than I will use sex attractants, drag rags, mock scrapes and decoying. Shawn

I like useing cedar/evergreen limbs/berrys for my sent spray, because most of the time hunting on the ground I can find a big evergreen or cedar row to snuggle up in and cut a couple limbs and have even more cover up.

Scent killer works for me, whether it fools the deer, or just me. I will try anything I have to to get in close for the shot.
I have had good luck attracting deer before the rut with vanilla scented lures. During the rut I use a special blend ordered from Maine....I can count big bucks with all my fingers(and some toes) that fell while coming to that stuff. Not all mine of course.
The biggest factor, IMHO, is wind direction. If the wind is wrong for your set up, doesnt matter what ya use.

There's lot of sage in Wyoming, and as I walk while hunting I grab a handful and rub it around. It smells good to me and smells natural to the critters.

I quit using any cover scents. I came to believe that NO scent is best.
I cannot say that a cover scent ever hurt or helped me.

I believe that if you're upwind of big game, their gonna smell you. Cover scent is like putting perfume on a skunk. It still smells  like a skunk!

I have used scent killer not cover scent. I have had deer walk right up to me, but I think you have to play the wind game. Deer noses are just too goo to fool completely with a scent killer.

I have had good luck with the fresh earth.  But like other things it is part of a system.  You have to be lean, etc.  Also I chew mint gum.  I wouldn't bother with the other market stuff for breath control.  They raise mint in WI and there is wild mint here so it works.  I have a freind that chews wintergreen snuff.  They come under his tree and smell and lick his spit.
