I'm thinking of buying a 2 piece longbow for elk hunting and would like ya'lls opinion.

To me, the strongest is the simplest, too. If you can shoot a straight grip, go with the sleeve. I understand that there are some makers who can do a sleeved locator grip, too.

Antone tried the hinged system? I seen one in TBM from Great Northern. I think it looks kinda cool, wondering how it works?

I really like the looks of the bow bolt....even if it just reminds me of the take-down system on my 16-gauge Winchester Model 12.

The hinge ends up at the front of the bow and isn't all that comfortable to me.
The best 2pc takedown system is Thunderhorns system by Duane Jessop. I've never seen anything that even compares. Just my opinion but I've tried them all.
Sleeves are stronger than hinges. Had a friend get hurt on a hinge failure. Just can't happen with a sleeve.
Like Comber said the Thunderhorn is top rate and the way he crafts it is so meticulous.Cost 300$s though.Shooting a widow PL 2 pc right now.Its real strong and very solid so far.The tolerances are real tight.Can be kinda hard to get apart if you leave it stung for along time.I do take it apart every 2 weeks or so and reinsert it.Better to be real snug than a bit loose I figure.Its strong and I trust it more than some other systems in the long run at this point.Time will tell.

If it is a straighter grip I had just as soon have the sleeve as anything.If it is a more shaply grip the Hinge is my next choice.Both have been used for many years with proven track records and are pretty simple.I like the feel of the hinge on a bow because it gives me a locator of sorts for hand placement.I also like it because it is the easiest to retrofit to an existing bow.I have not used the fiberglass wraped sleeve type connection but it looks like a great way to make a td as well.If BW is useing it then it has to work very well.jmo
There is no comparison to Bowbolt, imho - you'll never even know it's there...and it doesn't have to be a straight handle.
harrison made an top notch bow sleeve. i hear he has a composite system in the works and it good up to over 100lbs. his stuff is top line and dosnt get any better
The bowbolt is the slickest system I've seen by far.
The best one is one that is used on Liberty bows ...hinge by Dick Robertson...Allen uses these on his bows...good luck...mark#78
I'd go with the bowbolt.
I am kind of partial to BW's locket socket. The reason I like it is because it is simple, strong, and there are no exposed metal parts to scratch up the other half of your bow when you are transporting it.
Ask me how I know and if I am still sour about scratching / chipping up a Silvertip longbow riser with a metal TD system! :knothead:

I used to like the sleeve and its still good but the new Widow take down longbow is great. I have probably got 10000 or more shots out of mine and its as tight as new. Try it you'll like it.
'nother vote for the bowbolt here. It can be made & fitted to much smaller & more nicely profiled grips than a sleeve. It's a beautifully ingenious system & you won't even know it's there.
I got a great northern critter gitter with the jacknife takedown hinge. I love it! That bump on the far side of the riser really helps my grip consistincy. I have a hard time with a straight grip but this bump solves it. Jerry told me he has never had a failure in all the time hes been making them. Another good point about this hinge is the string never leave the limbs. When you unfold the bow it is in the same tune as when you folded it. Nice touch that you dont have to worry about brace height at 4 am in the dark beside your truck.
Skinner, yep, they do have a great idea there. Problem is, it's only for black widows, I don't think they do a retrofit or sell the parts for others to do itand from the looks for it, would not work for a handle that's more recurve-like. If they do sell them, they can retrofit, and it will work on a curved handle, well...I think they would be the winner, the simpler the better, imho. Thanks or posting that pic, have yet to see one up close.
