I got the shakes so I went out and scored some bow wood.
I have two bamboo backing strips, one piece of ipe 7/16 thick and two pieces of ipe one 3/16 and one 1/4 inch thick plus a piece of lemon wood that's 7/16 thick tapering to 3/8ths. All this stuff is 1.5 wide and at least 6 feet long.
I know I can get another BBI bow out of this, my question is the lemon wood.
The lemon at 7/16 is gonna be to thin by itself so could I use a boo back a thin ipe core then use the lemon for the belly? I have no clue about lemon wood so is it thick enough to not get over powered?

I haven't tried it, but it doesn't seem like a good idea.
Conventional thought is you want your core have good weight to shear strength ratios since it will have glue forces on both surfaces. Maple, walnut, elm, hickory, and even oak all fit the bill.
Ipe is an excellent belly wood but I don't think it's all that great in shear, and it's heavy.
I wouldn't use a core that's stronger than the belly. I do plan to try a bamboo/ipe/ipe tri lam though.

That's what I was kinda wondering Bmorv. Probably just need to find a better core to match up with the lemon wood. I do have some red oak, don't know if I like the sound of that though?
-
I have heard of people using red oak for cores, but I haven't tried it myself. It would be my last choice of the ones I listed above.

Save your ipe for belly lams. 1/4" is perfect for a tri lam belly.

John, pm me your mailing address. I'll send you some tapered core lams.

Ok

If you feel like having an English warbow and you have the length. You could layer them up boo back, ipe core, and the lemon wood belly. I’ve seen that combo done before. I think the ipe core adds some stiffness and mass without adding too much. It looks like you have about 3/4-7/8” thickness, if you went about 1/4” wider than the thickness to start with. I’d say you should end up with a ewb in the 90-100# at 30” area. Though it’s hard to say as I’ve only messed with selfbows.
I’ve been in an elb, warbow and Viking bow mood. So if I see the possibility that’s usually a recomendation if mine, just for the reason that I like them.

Yea I don't think my shoulder is gonna let me pull that. I have seen some of those threads were some use ipe for a core. I'm just don't know how thick it needs to be so I don't end up scraping off all the belly wood.
Would like to try It one day maybe 65-70 though.
-
You don't even need 65 to 70.. You are going to mess up your shoulder shooting heavyweight bows. 50 is plenty, hell 45 is plenty.
Doesn't take much to kill ah chicken, son. LOL
-
Did you see the size of them chickens!
Yea Roy i just want one one day. If i stick to 55 and under im fine. I killed every thing this year with a #45. Some times i small game hunt with a #40.

One of my favs.

Be careful round them chickens. I got my A$$ kicked by a rooster one time. LOL
-
No roosters just hens. I carry a side arm any how.

John, I wouldn't use the lemonwood as a belly with ipe core. It makes a pretty good belly for a backed bow but is susceptible to fretting if you aren't careful. Lemonwood should be fine for a core though.
-
Pat if it is 7/16 tapered to 3/8ths how thick of an ipe belly lam should I use?
Roy said he would send me some tapered core lams. But id like to use this some how.

My guess would be about 1/8" but that's just a guess. The glue lines add to the draw weight some so the components don't have to be all that thick
