Title: Opinions please!!!
Post by: Bvas on March 05, 2018, 06:44:00 PM
What do you think......is the antler a cool addition? Or a tacky addition?  BE HONEST!!

I think it makes for a unique medallion, maybe engrave the year in it. But I’m afraid it might be a little too much.

Other part is, How big of a pain in the a$$ will it be to drill thru the wood and glass without tear out cuz I’d like to somewhat embed it.

Embedded in there would look cool but that would be tricky with the antler shape.  I don’t think I would add it as is

Being honest, I think it would be hard to make it look deliberate and intentional.  I'm afraid it would look like something glued on as an afterthought.

The bow itself is beautiful.  It's subtle, but the design and the wood selection really speak for themselves.  I think the medallion might detract from it.

I think I'd not do it.

I personally think that women should dress conservatively.  Well you did ask my opinion.

Not for me either. Especially if it sticks out of the riser. I'd probably hang it on something and tear it off....

Ok go for it. Drill out a shallow hole that the edges just set down in, then use smooth on and mount it flush.

I'd also mount a bottle opener inside that dumb hook on the bottom.

Go ahead, I triple dog dare ya..  :)

I think it would look neat, but be a bit tacky. The best way I can think to put it in would be to use a diamond holesaw bit for tile so it’ll go slow and make a clean cut by filing through instead of cutting. Then use an epoxy with a coloring agent to fill the weird gaps. No idea if it would be worth it, but it’s the best way I can think of.

Thanks guys. You’ve reaffirmed what I was thinking.

If it was about half that size, I think I would like it better. But that is off of a spike shed, so that’s about as small as they get.

Plus Roy is all for it.....So it must be a bad idea.

Bvas, it would be cool if done right. If ya ever end up with a bad riser for some reason id practice with that. But I wouldn't risk messing up a good one on an experiment.

Can't add anything more to the above except I concur. Don't do it!

Brad-

If you were to do it you might use a Forstner bit. It makes a clean flat bottomed hole without a deeper hole in the middle like a paddle bit would.

Done right it might look cool stained a darker color to match the darker riser wood.

Some of the Bear bows with the stuck on medallion don't look all that good but the older ones with the inlaid medallion are good looking.

You might run a test on another piece of wood and see how it goes. I think it would look better darker though, and like you thought with a design in the middle.

Honestly, Brad. I would not take the chance of messing up that nice bow.

Do what Keith said to make a nice cut...  Then I would take some EA-40 and put a black or dark brown  pigment in it and set it with that and sand it flush...
Looks wise I don't think it's gonna blow up and you would be no better off than where you started...
But if you did some nice engraving in it I think it would look very cool...  And maybe put it lower on the grip...
