A lot will depend on the ambient temp in the room where your box will be.

I have a four bulb box and with 100w bulbs, I had to bury it in blankets and it took a very long time to get 150ish. That was in a fairly cool environment. I now have 200w bulbs and I can reach 165 in very short order. Factoring in the room I am now in is much warmer, the time frame difference is significant.

So think about how long it takes to reach temp in relation to how well it will hold.

I have a plywood hot box as per Binghams. I added 3/4" foil backed insulation board lining inside and a 168deg thermostat from Binghams. I can easily make that temp with 4, 100w bulbs. I also have a small fan inside to keep the temp even throughout the box. This box stays in my unheated basement that goes between 40 degrees and 60 degrees depending on the season.

As said, 4 100s with good foil board or 4 200s without.

I have 6 in mine, mix of 100 and 200  and now have lined with double foil board so it is overkill for sure....

I think it's important to have a slow cool down too and not just how hot it will get.

Thanks fellas I would love to make a permenent one but no room in my cramped shop so the foam one is lite enough to throw in the rafters when done but all the local big box stores  hear don't have the foil backed foam I wonder if I put spray adhesive on the foam and tin foil would do the same thing ? found some nice 1 in. foam it would make a solid box !

If your local home centers don't stock it, instead of trying to make a homemade foil lined foam board can't they order it and have it delivered to your local store without shipping charges? Might be easier than trying to make it. Solvents in some glues will melt styrofoam.

I found some 1/2 foil foam maybe I will just make the outer box out of the non foil foam  and line it with the foil foam  that would probably make it more of a thermal barrier  box .

Ritchie-

My box is made from the blue small cell foam insulation with the half inch foil stuff lining the inside. The edges of the foam panels are covered in the foil tape (just to protect it and to keep all the small white foam pieces off the floor). I have four 100W bulbs in ceramic sockets attached to a strip of flame retardant sheet rock on the bottom. Only the edges are "framed" with 1X2s. The edge/corner pieces are just Ls. I stick it all together with duct tape when I need it and it all stores flat when I don't. I have a digital Indoor/Outdoor thermometer poked through a hole dead enter of the top sealed with a piece of the foil tape. In the shop with minimal heating it gets up to temp in 15 or 20 minuets and holds fairly steady. I don't have a thermostat or fan. I have a 2 inch hole on each end with a foil tape flap I can open and close to moderate the heat but unless its already a hundred degrees in the shop I usually don't have to mess with them.

Pretty sure I bought everything at either Lowes or Home Depot. Hope this helps.

OkKeith

Ask if they can ship the foil foam.  Northern IL has it.  The foil bubble wrap insulation may also work.

There is another type of metallic insulation sheeting (I think) that folks have used on hot boxes. I believe Lowe's or HD has that too.

My oven is constructed of 7/16 OSB lined with foil bubble wrap. (Reflectex).  4 200 watt bulbs.  Easily gets to 180 before the snap disk cuts it out.
