My hat is off to Kelly for all his work over the years. I got all cross-eyed just trying to keep bowyers and victims and their info straight for 19 participants. I have no idea how he kept it all together back in the days when there were over 80 people!

First plan is to make some perfectly edge grain maple action wood for cores . See what that does for performance .

Like black palm paired with maple. The palm is dark with a very unique and striking grain. Maple is very uniform in grain and color and they work well together.

I don't have a preference between dark and light colors.
I like the natural color of wood in all of it's forms.
If I get glass I would rather clear.

Darker/ lighter riser? I am a big fan of contrasting grain, light or dark. Can be applied to limbs as well.
Colored glass or clear? Clear is awesome so the core or veneer can shine through, but I have seen some good looking black glass/zebra riser combos.
Boo or hickory back? Boo.
Selfbow? Selfbow, tri-lam, glass bow... all the bows!
Also I left out a critical piece of info on my signup post, my draw length is 30". I'm pretty stoked about this trade, and the decisions are keeping me up as well! A bit nervous as well, as this will be my 6th bow. Hope I can measure up!

I got a confession to make... When Canopy messaged me for info... I said, "This may sound selfish but could you you hook me up with an experienced Bowyer"... Reason being I have not shot a lot of other bows and wanna see whats out there and take notes and compare my bow to theirs... I could care less about gaining a bow, I got about fifteen laying around... I am in it to learn and have some fun with this... AS far as giving out a bow I am gonna try hard and make the best damn bow I can make for the Receiver...
Just make my bow Right handed, between 39 and 43lbs and I shoot three under... A little over or under the weight will be fine if you miss your mark... Don't stress it... But if it is under, it better be fast... I don't want any arrows bouncing off the hay bales... :) :)

Think I have a plan, the dirty ash is gonna be it...... It will be an all American bow, I made some sorta maple awood this morn for cores, but with only 3 glue lines in it by selecting some very flat grain maple and cutting to 1/2" and gluing together to make a 2" blank . I think it will be better than aboo....
And some more dirty ash for the riser ...

He's right I do keep trying to build a good one. But maybe because my standards are higher than Roybert's.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure Roy has ever shot a bow I made. But the one I shot that he made showered me with splinters and almost put my eye out. Nothing he can say via keyboard can hurt more than that did.

Ok , my maple awood plan didn’t work out. Just tested it against regular maple and it wasn’t as stiff. So ground new lams and tested the tapers against each other, maple still won.

Clear is always beautiful, but hunting bows are great simple.

Here's the other aesthetic consequence of flipping that lam. The spliced joints are supposed to orient in opposite directions belly to back on the bow. Now they don't.
Not the best pic, but you see what I mean.
Actually, it's probably a good thing this happened. The splice I made is pretty wide. Takes up a lot of real estate on the limb. I may not have been able to narrow the limbs enough without cutting into it.
I've decided to finish the bow (eventually) and pass it along to someone who could use it in spite of it's cosmetic flaws.
I hate making mistakes and wasting materials, but sometimes, it can be an investment in my own education.
At least, that's what I tell myself.... ;)

I had part of a newspaper article under clear once. I gave it away but it ended up coming apart on the ramp probably because I stained the lams with an oil based stain!

I finally decided on what I'm doing. When I first started into traditional shooting, I knew nothing about it nor did I know anyone who shot so I was on my own. While searching the good ol web for traditional archery information, I came a across a website called Shaffer silvertip bows. On their home page was a bow I instantly fell in love with. It was a 3 pc recurve with a shedua riser and flat grain zebrawood limbs. So, I decided, why not build this bow for this bow swap. I'll be doing a 58" take down recurve with a shedua riser with zebrawood accent stripe and flat grain zebrawood limbs. So, as soon as the shedua gets here, i'll be in business. Looking forward to seeing how this bow comes together.

As for my progress, I've cut plywood for the form but not putting it together until I get some of that construction paper to bring it to specs.
A nice piece of Myrtle Is on the way from Oregon for the riser.
I'm struggling with core lams and glass colors. Wanting this to be reminiscent of old school Hill style straight limbed backset.
Any thoughts on cores and glass?

I was gonna glue up the bow today but you know how it goes... Yah gotta pick out and match your lams, scarf and glue some lams together, figure out stack thickness, record everything in the notebook, cutting lams to size, double and triple checking everything so that there is no mistakes, then there is always something else involved and you gotta answer the phone a few times... Three hours later and no glue on the lams yet... I got a small job to do this afternoon so it looks as though this bow might not get glued up today...
And all I can picture is the poor victim is sitting out in the cold waiting by the mailbox... :)

I finished up my lams and veneers for my victim. I need to work on the riser next but I have been waiting on new guide bearings for my bandsaw, which finally came today. As did the glass from Kenny. I may have to give him a call about those though, he forgot to include assembly instructions... :confused:

i have bought bamboo plank. the internal part was full. split it and make thick lam from it than suddenly loved the idea of making bow with this thick (little more than 1cm) lams. well i will keep this as plan a.
plan b is the bow that i have started long ago. which is much like chinese type.
plan c is i have ordered the metal casting for recurve limbs. next week i will have those castings. idea was the sequeze the lams with 2 metal casting with c clamps.
let's see which one i will be shipping.
at the end of the year i will be build 3 bow and 2 will stay at home :D

Lonnie, I'm guessing that you checked if your limb pads were square. If so you could just put a limb pad over lay on to cover the problem.

Just keep in m8nd that cocobolo darkens over time so eventually it could look like the ipe unless it's Mexican cocobolo but yours doesn't look like mexican. no problem with that just if you like contrast the zebra would be the better choice.

I am pleased with how the Beli looks under glass although I am not completely sold on the riser accents. I may have to be at the rate I am getting this built.

I’ve got mine roughed out and ready to start bending with the long string. I’ve still gotta do a bit of cleanup, but the floor tiller from the roughed out tapers look and feel good. I should be able to hit above 50# with it without having to heat treat and pike. Though I’ll have those options if necessary. It’s sapwood backed Osage 72” t2t and 7/8” wide at the handle for 10” each way from center then tapering to 3/8” tips. Also nice tight rings at 32 per inch. I’ve got as much out of this stave as it would give I think.
Righ now I’m debating. Victorian era horn nocks, or Viking style single side nock with 2” bracing levers?
I’m leaning towards the Viking style nock. Though the handle will be wrapped in some old eleph leather to fill out the grip more, as it already feels tiny in the hand. But still floor tillera like it’s still pushing 70#

I have a special piece of wood I'm using. It's special in the sense that it was given to me by my father, a gunsmith, who purchased it sometime in the early 1970's. He had intended to use it to make pistol grips. Apparently, lace wood doesn't really show off it's striking grain characteristics as well as he would have liked on smaller pieces.
Anyway, I'm combining this lacewood with tigerwood and maple. I'll try to get some pics up tonight.

I’ve decided to make my victims bow into a Hedeby Viking bow as opposed to a more Victorian style elb. I’ll be back to it as soon as I can get a Penobscot down to weight. 40# at 27” before I lashed in the backer bow, and 70# at 15” after. I was more expecting a 20-25# weight gain, not that much. I’m glad I need to drop weight as the main bow could flex more in the outer half of each limb.ill get that evened out then I’ll drop some weight from thenbacker bow.

I braced my victims bow this morning for the first time. I was very surprised, it's sitting at a 1/8" negative tiller. For me I count that as a win.
I did also find that I am about 5-7 lbs under weight which unfortunately is enough to be out of the requested specs. Which is baffling, because according to Binghams chart, at the total stack measurement (measured right at the end of the wedge fade), I should be right in the middle of the 10 lb range that was specified.
The bow is plenty long so I have room to pike it a bit so my question(s) will be around doing that. If I take another inch I will gain X number of pounds, but how much of that will I lost by narrowing the limbs so they don't look like tree trunks and have all that extra tip weight.

My bows gain around 5-6# when you take an inch off each end.
I think Binghams measure lams at the butt thickness instead of the end of wedge. That would make you lighter tho, correct me if I'm wrong on that.
Did you go with plan length and taper rate?
How about the limb pad angle?

I only measured at the end of the wedge because it was easier than measuring the butt end and trying to cipher that without the wedge. I checked my specs and I am definitely equipped with a NON-ciphering brain.
I shortened it another inch and even with narrowing the limbs I appear to be 2-3 lbs over the bottom end of the range. WHEW!!

I’m copying the Viking style with this bow.(can’t remember the name atm). Where they left bracing levers past the nock. Which is a single side nock. The levers really aren’t needed on a bow of this draw weight. But why not. And if it ends up a bit thumpy in the hand I can cut them off later. I made one bow in this style before and it was an eastern red cedar self bow pulling 40# at 27”. It was the smoothest shooting bow I’ve shot, no thump at all, even with te levers. Though that could be because it was ERC and a dense Osage might act different.

I got mine back to 23” and is pulling 45#. It’s looking like it’ll end up about 50# by te time i get it to its full draw. I usually stop on the tree and sand and shoot in the bow the last couple inches. So I’ve got about 3” to go before that point. It should be just touching 50# at that point. I do t think I’ll have to heat treat to get them weight. I don’t think I want to with this stave anyway as there are a few flaws that it might make worse by putting more stress on the sapwood back. I’ve been trying to correct a bit of string alignment issue by tillering it in, but it just isn’t wanting to move yet. So I’ll have to use some heat to bring it in. Otherwise the only heat will be used to bend the levers to match the curve of the bent bow.

I’m also leaning towards leaving the handle bare and inlaying parallel charcoal powder lines to indicate the arrow pass. Then making an India ink mark to show where to line up your middle finger when grabbing the bow. Either that or a leather wrap of either soft thin (probably goat) leather, or some thick/tough elephant leather. The bare handle would be closer to traditional as I don’t think the Vikings used handle wraps, like the old English warbows. But it’s not really a fully authentic version right as is.

Today I learned a spade bit will seriously jack up some plywood if you drill straight through from one side. Also, this form will probably survive the apocalypse. I ended up going with 3/4" beech dowels spaced 2", 1.5" down from the face of the form. Going to get my lams joined tonight and then its riser template time!

Surprisingly, it cost less than $40 to ship from Colorado Springs to, well, somewhere back east... ;)
The story behind the crate is that I couldn't find any kind of shipping carton, ready made, large enough to ship a recurve. Being a plumber by trade, my first inclination was to use a piece of PVC pipe. SDR 35. Unfortunately, it would have needed to be better than 10" in diameter.
That would have been ridiculously heavy and expensive.
So, I bought a 4 X 8 sheet of 1/4" underlayment plywood for $15 bucks and made my own. Used some 2 X 3 studs I ripped in half lengthwise for the sides. I already had the screws and wood glue, so it only cost me about $20 bucks. Probably not cost effective for volume production, but I have enough material left over for a second crate. Not too bad really.
Where I got a little butt hurt was the $20 for a roll of bubble wrap. I had it in my head that would be cheap.
I guess my problem is that I'm old enough to remember what stuff used to cost. ;)

It will be a mild r/d, black glass, curly maple riser, and walnut/maple lams. Going for clean and simple on this one. The weight should come in perfect for the recipient.

Craig - You sir, are a true craftsman! Dang, this thing is nice. Your attention to detail is incredible and I must say you make me feel inferior as a bowyer.
I unboxed it and immediately went outside to test it out. It sure blows away the straight and mild r/d longbows I make. I felt like I was back shooting a compound again.
The only downside is that I am in need of some stiffer spined arrows. All the arrows I have are spined to shoot out of my straight longbows that are nowhere near centershot, so they flew a bit wonky out of this bow. I already have a call into Gary Hall for some and I sent him a couple pics of the bow so he can do some fancy fletching to match. I already know this thing is a speed demon, and I can't wait to get some properly spined arrows to really appreciate it's full performance.

Made a fatal error on my first attempt. Wasn't thinking very well & tried to flip the tips AFTER laminating. The heat separated the laminations. So I put it aside to chop it down & give it to my son. It was maple-backed walnut (trapped back). It will be pretty but too short for my victim to draw back 28".
Changed gears on the design & put in some Perry reflex on a maple-backed maple. While it was gluing up, I realized that I didn't have enough clamps for such a design. Went ahead & let it dry & floor tillered it. Cut some nocks in & pulled it to brace 50-60 times with no issues. Went to put a string on it & "BAM!" it blew. Got my hand whacked pretty good. Post mortem indicates that the section that broke wasn't laminated (needed those clamps). Back to the drawing board.
Simple, straight glue up this time. No added reflex on hickory-backed walnut. Used 2x lumber to sandwich the pieces together with more even compression as it dried. Now it's floor tillered. Hoping to cut some nocks in next week & put it on the tree. A trapped hickory backing on walnut makes a nice color contrast.
And if that doesn't work, I'll opt for a rawhide-backed hickory board.
Got permission to hunt some private land for turkey season, which starts in a couple weeks. Saw droppings all over the place when I was there a few weeks ago. I'm hoping for a shorter season this year so I can get this bow done & shipped in time. Project keeps getting longer with these rookie errors.

Tonight I finished laying out my design and cut and faired my router template for my new form. Then I realized I didn't have the right glass on hand so had to send Kenny a quick email to set things right again. Have most of the day off on Friday, so hoping to finish up the form and cut some lams before being tied up for the weekend.
As this is a completely new design for me, I'm doubting I'll hit weight on the first try. But I think I have a home or two for the practice bows. In the meantime, maybe I can figure out how to make my bows less Plain Jane after everything that's been posted. Competition is tough this year!

Sorry for your luck Yosemite. Have you considered using the bike tire inter tube method? It's a good option when doing a single lamination and is inexpensive. That would be my go to if I didn't have enough clamps.

You could start in the middle and work towards each end, but I'm not not keen on doing that either.
If it was me, I would cut out the curve and sand it, then plane the sides square to it.

I went for simple classiness in this bow with the curly maple riser and black glass. The limb cores are walnut with center lam of maple for contrast. I like the way this one turned out and I'm tempted to make one just like it for myself.

as long as there isn't glue gaps the thick glue lines are going to be cosmetic only. Remember that is your fade so the end is just barely going to be moving anyway. once you get 1/4-1/2" back from the end of the fade, nothing is moving. I don't think you have anything to worry about structurally. nice looking piece

Wenge is beautiful and this one I filled with EA 40 and acetone mixed 50/50. Usually the grain is very open but this one went very easily. I've tried to fill with finish but that doesn't work as easily as this time...How did you apply the Ea40?
How long does it take to dry before sanding and finishing?
Been using CA, which works, but takes a lot of coats for deep pores.

Post-mortem shows that my lamination was just fine. I just think it was too much draw weight for that light wood. I don't think HD walnut is as good as a stave. Might do better at 70"+ and something closer to 35-40#.
Time is running out so I'm opting for a design & materials I've gotten to work several times in the past. I've had fun experimenting. Now it's time to get something done.

Got limb tips finished up and done some final sanding. I put a string on it at lunch today and put a few arrows through it. I need to round over the limb edges and do final sanding over the whole bow and put a finish on it. Getting close to complete. While I'm here is there anything I need to do to the bubinga to seal it before I spray the finish on it? Thanks in advance.

If you're spraying epoxy like Thunderbird for example, you don't need to do anything. Same with catalyzing urethanes.
If you're using a varnish or conventional polyurethane, you'll want to seal the wood first. A lot of guys like shellac for this. I prefer to use superglue as a grain filler/sealer.

Well, I got my test bow in the oven tonight in the new form. This is the first time I've done risers with a pattern sanding jig. Dang, where has that been all my life!?! Things went well, I'm excited to pull it out tomorrow and hopefully see where weight landed before long. Then off to the clear glass and good veneers for the final bow.

I put it om my bro's bow last year, gloss then flat . He said any touch to anything left a white mark on the bow.
I use 4 coats duplicolor in the red can on wood surfaces, don't worry too much about the glass. Automotive clearcoat. Then I give it a coat or 3 of Duplicolor Wheel finish matte in the bigger black can on all surfaces.
No luck with the stuff in pic, bro scraped it off after season and refinished. I even told him it was under warranty.... :saywhat:

I have a neighbor who is having a birthday soon and is getting into archery. I think this one is going to be perfect for him. Now to pick the veneers for the fancy swap version!

I found some really cool wood in a scrap pile for a riser. Plan to get her glued up this weekend now that the test bow worked out so well. I'll try to post pics of the lams tomorrow. Yew belly and some dark wood I forget the name of at the moment on the back. You'll probably only be able to see the grain in the sun, but still cool.

So I had found this really great laminated wood in the dumpster, not sure how old or what it was originally used for. Hard, heavy, resin impregnated, in 10' strips, 2" wide x 1-1/8" thick. Had that old plywood smell to it when you worked with it, but looked awesome if you tried shaping it. And seemed crazy strong, and had a little weight to it. Figured it would make good riser wood. I glued two together for that purpose and cooked it in the oven. I was surprised when it came out that I saw a few cracks had developed during heating. After some consideration, I figured I'd still go with it. Shaped it into the riser (you can see it on the left):

I had everything glued up and was making some last minute adjustments to the placement of the tip wedges before moving to the form when the riser slid out and hit the floor. This has happened before, but usually it is salvageable once I clean the dirt off and re-glue. Maybe one fade is a bit banged up, but usually it doesn't affect the finished bow. However, looking at this one showed both fades had shattered back to where it was almost 1/8 thick. I hadn't thought about how brittle it might be. So with my wife tapping her foot because we were due at the neighbor's for dinner I had to slam out another riser. I grabbed the first thing I could think of that was thick enough for a solid riser that wouldn't look too bad - walnut. Hope my recipient is ok with that. Should look ok I guess...
Otherwise Sunday was a good day in the bow shop. First time I glued up two bows in one day. The form was still warm from the first one when the second one went back in the oven.
Should have this thing shooting this weekend.

Upon further inspection, the box contained one of the prettiest forward handle longbows I've ever put in my hand. Kenny, I'm not just saying that. I'm truly unworthy! I've had one custom bow built, and I've shot many more, and this bow you've built absolutely blows me away! I'm forever grateful! I will try to get some good pictures up soon! Wouldn't you know it, I tried taking pictures with my phone but apparently there was a memory issue and I couldn't take pics, so I had my son take a full draw pic.

Just out of curiosity, do you all scuff sand your glass before clear-coating? If so, is 400-600 grit acceptable?
Yeah, you pretty much have to. The manufacturer puts some kind of coating on it which is very resistant to other things adhering to it.
I typically sand to 400 grit if it's getting a gloss finish. 220 grit if matte. Wipe it down with acetone then spray the clear.

also experimented with dyeing some tip wedges. One of these soaked in ferric nitrate solution and the other in rit dye for about eight hours. The light one is the ferric and the dark one is the rit. You can see by the cut off ends that the ferric saturated the wood and the dye did not.
So, I'll use the ferric dyed ones.

To be fair, I gave fair warning that I was building a board bow & that I should be paired with another entry-level builder out there. I attempted three different experimental builds before getting this one to work out. But with precious little time to get this thing done now, I can honestly say that I've done better finish work. But aesthetics aside, this bow is shooting better than I expected. My 20-yard gap is right around 7" with 600 grain arrows, which is better than I usually get with my homemade stuff. Arrows that were about 500 grains sounded much nicer coming off the bow & flew much faster. If I were to set this thing up, I'd drop to 4" fletching on a 500 grain arrow.
This is a simple hickory-backed maple. My son helped with the roughing out stage. I taught him a little about using a block plane. He often comes to hang out and chat when I work on archery gear.
I put in a couple inches of backset (perry reflex?) at the glue-up stage. After shooting in, the bow holds no set. It's 65" NTN. It's asymmetrical -- bottom limb is about 1.25" shorter. 1.5" at the fades, parallel for the first half and tapering to 1/2" nocks. There's a small knot in the belly in the upper third of the top limb so I left that part a little stiff, as well as the last 6" or so of each limb.
My wife ran over the scale I use on the tillering tree while I was scraping so I'm guessing it pulls about 45# at 28" but I wrote 40# expecting it to drop a little after a few hundred more arrows run through it. We'll call it 40+#. Hopefully, my victim can find a use for it or, if not, give it away to a newer archer out there. I'd be absolutely tickled if somebody were able to use this successfully on a hunt.
I'm pretty well humbled by the bows I'm seeing made on here. I'm not in the league of craftsmanship of most of you but I'll take this as an opportunity to learn what I can & appreciate the opportunity to participate. All constructive feedback is appreciated.

Put the first coat of spray on it last night and noticed a spot I missed in the final sanding. I'll go back and sand that spot tonight and get the final coats put on. I've decided to make this one my swap bow, although I was really wanting to keep it for myself. However I want my victim to recieve the best that I have to offer. The original swap bow looks and shoots great I just had a few rookie errors in it that most people wouldn't notice but someone who builds bows would. So I'll keep the original one for myself, and of course build me some more.

BTW:
my formula to write on bow etc.
materials needed.
1. gouache (white)
2. white (opaque) wood glue
3. water
put little amount of gouache in to pod and mix it with little amount of water until it dissolves completely.
then put some wood glue and mix it again.
with dip pen you can write permanently.
this method was used in permanent black indian and chinese inks in history. i just converted a little. they were using resin instead of glue and ashes for black powder.
maybe this information can be useful to someone :D

Made progress yesterday and got it profiled, tip overlays on and on a long string.
The strung profile is interesting and seems to contribute to smooth and stack free draw. Maybe there is something to this running the backset through the entire length.

34 screws in the lid alone, and I couldn’t get all the bubble wrap back in the box without the bow in it!

Thank you for the kind words, they truly mean a lot to me. I over-packed the bow because the military postal system is very hard on packages and I didn't want them to screw it up. We often receive packages that are either crushed or completely water-logged (not kidding) and I didn't want that to happen to this.
I know this isn't the prettiest bow you have seen, and I learned a lot from building it. I had a ton of reservations doing this but I knew it was the only way I would ever cross the line and do it.
You are a hell of a guy, and you were the inspiration for most of the build I did this year. When I found out I was your builder I was initially crushed. I didn't think I could ever come up with something that would impress you and I figured all was lost. It was a blessing in disguise though because it drove me to come up with my own bow design and think for myself.
Despite everything, I figured it out with help from you and the rest of the guys. I know there are things on this bow that should be improved upon, but it is my first laminate and I think it turned out ok. I am damn proud that you of all people hold my first laminate bow and I hope it servers you well. Thank you for all the help you have given me in the past, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to build for you while teaching me at the same time.

Kind of a backward way, but I go thru more bows than arrows so I try to tune the bow to the arrow sometimes.

Anyhow, right now I have the following stats:

4 are being shipped (or about to be)
-All bowyers who had been told to hold should have been given clearance to ship by now.

Today I stripped tape off to start final sanding and round the corners. Now, before I proceed, understand that I had stripped off all the tape when it came out of the oven. Everything was hunky dory. I retaped to protect the glass and when I took it off today this jumped out at me.

I had same thing on my last bow. But I think I did mine prying the bow off the form(had a lot of squeeze out). Fortunately mine were close enough to the edge that they came out when I profiled the limbs.

Looks nice ink! I understand the time issue, I feel the same way when I'm building. I know I wouldn't be sad to see that bow show up at my doorstep! Good job brother.

those are the only pics that i have with full draw. but i have post pictures in a lot to this thread.
i have shot some arrows with this bow. i felt no disturbance. arrows fly nicely.
i have put "luminescent" logo (3d printed) on upper limb. if you expose it to a light for 15-20 secs it will glow all night. (btw: i am not sure if this is something good or bad)
and put string stopper to both limbs for which not to damage the limbs.
well, let see how receiver will react.

Unfortunately as the ups guy handed me the package my wife told me we needed to leave on our overnight trip so I will have to delay shooting and picture taking until at earliest tomorrow. But I did manage to put it together and string it, and my wife made the comment you look like a kid at Christmas, and that’s what it feels like. Can’t wait to do a full review of it when it get back!

Excellent job with your bow! The finish job is amazing, whatever you put on the back to bring out the grain really makes it look sweet. I also really like the way you did the nocks. You sell yourself short my man, this is a fabulous bow that I couldn't build myself (believe me I've tried). There is something to be said for the beauty of simplicity in craftsmanship, it pleases me greatly.
So on to the details! I threw it up on the scale since yours came to an untimely end, and you were right on with your estimate. Comes to 43# @ 28", and shoots hard and fast! It really likes the carbons I use for my recurve and puts them right where I'm looking. I actually shot the center out of my "target butt" within the first 10 minutes of shooting! I can't wait to get out to the range and put this to work on the 3D course. On top of all this, you were kind enough to send me a 3Rivers gift card. I'm beside myself really, your craftsmanship and kindness are top-notch Matt. Thank you for building this for me!

Travis, you did an amazing job on this bow! The looks are stunning and it shoots just as good as it looks. It's smooth and has zero hand shock. It's actually smoother to draw and feels lighter than my 55 lb longbow. I put in on the scale and it came right in a 60#'s, a perfect hunting weapon. I almost wish it wasn't so nice, because I'm already thinking about how I will protect it when I bring it in the woods with me. I'm gonna load this guy up with a heavy arrow and the hogs better watch out in a few months.
And this knife is awesome too! Never had a custom knife before, but always wanted one. This will be right along side me this hunting season.
You really out did yourself Travis. I can't say enough about how happy I am to have it. You even got me rethinking that " I only build wooden bows" thing I have.

In this case, it wasn't the military's fault. I know for certain that it was my local carrier. All the same, I'm relieved it made it. I figured I could throw that pipe off my roof onto the asphalt and still have the bow in good condition ;)

My recipient's bow has been done including string for awhile now. Just needs the leather sideplate and packing. I'm really sorry to keep him waiting a little longer, but it just won't happen tonight with a 0430 wakeup call tomorrow. I don't do well without sleep.
Will probably do a better update from the road while Sweka drives. But after we leave civilization, you'll have to take any complaining or questions up with Deputy Roy until I get back.

And talk about some finishing touches -- the Bolivian Rosewood tips, leather handle, sock and stringer all included. The string was also very well done -- very clean, unlike the stuff that I make. Luckily, I had some arrows that spine around 25#, which happen to fly great out of this bow. I'm really going to enjoy this bow. If I don't take it out for deer, I may yet give it a go for a winter pig hunt. It pulls about 50# at my draw and is 62" long -- perfect for me.
I took it outside to fling a few arrows in our summer heat. My wife saw me outside & made a point to come out to tell me how cool she thought the bow looked at full draw. She usually rolls her eyes at my hobbies, archery being no exception. So, Sacred mt, to have impressed her, you did some fine work!

Had to do this project indoors. While I was out of town a pair of robins set up housekeeping on my patio light fixture. They layed four eggs two of which hatched. As soon as they hatched dad became Super aggressive and dive bombs constantly. He has hit me in the back of the head three times! That's no way to treat the landlord.
Be glad when they are gone. It's taking all of my better side and the better half to keep me from a rude eviction.

Made a string while the wrap was drying then ran a few arrows through it. Shoot pretty well considering it has no nocking point.

The very first thing I did was set a nock point on the very well crafted string and fling some arrows! I can only shoot 18 yards at my house, but I'm confident this bow can reach out much farther as long as I do my part.
This is one awesome bow. From the smooth, silky finish, to the custom leather grip, to the excellent color combination. I am honored to have it and it will see a lot of use!

I love it bud! It is a very well made bow, and, very different than what I build. Which makes it fun and interesting.
I use India ink. After MUCH experimentation, I found that works best. Usually. ;)

I use an old fashioned quill pen. They call them calligraphy pens now. You can get a kit with the pen holder, different tips, and ink for about $20 at Hobby Lobby.
Also, the extra fine tip paint pens work well. They're cheap, but they seem to only want to work once or twice no matter how well you clean and cap them. Many different colors, 2-3 bucks a piece.

Overall it’s a good bow. A nice simple Osage bow with flipped tips that throws and arrow well and throws it where I’m looking. There is also a it in shelf, that is large enoigh to give a solidly repeatable holding point but still feel like shooting off the knuckle. And be here she is.

So to repeat, we have had 100% of bows shipped and soon will have 100% of bows received! Well done to all participants. Most bows were shipped by the deadline, and all except the bow to Ink were shipped by the end of the grace period. Ink's bow was ready earlier, but the shipping to Turkey took a little more work than we anticipated and the comms have been very good as we worked through it. Thanks to those that helped on that front!
