I got to meet Bvas from Ohio.
I guess he's ok.. :)
-
I thought about cleaning the shop today......
Then I remembered it's the thought that counts so I'm good!
-
Visited central Indiana today. Seems like a nice place. Closer to osage. Bigger deer. Friendly people. And was warmer than when I left here yesterday.
-
Going to buy lumber for a table maybe I can find a piece of bow wood while I'm there. Wish me luck.
-
John, I was in a similar situation. I went to Menards to look at washers and decided "why not check out the lumber." To my delight, I not only found they just started carrying random lengths of hard maple, but I discovered this beauty:
This is just a small bit of the board, but almost all of the 1" x 6" x 12' is like this (with a small bit of heartwood inclusion at one end and a little bit of swirling in the middle, but it's also on the side with the heartwood). I'm guessing I should be able to rip a good number of backing strips or core lams from this.
And I was able to find a steal of a deal on a nice open box washer!
-
Nice, Ty.
-
Nice board Ty, we have lowes that's it even if I drive an hour to h depot same thing poplar or oak that's it. Ive called every cabinet maker and any one I can think of but no good. Guess ill end up in charlotte or fayettenam to look. I hate the big city.
-
TODAY!!!!! Today I endured "One of those days".... One of those days that no matter what I did or how much effort, attention or care I put in to it, it all just turned to crap.
But, no matter what I did wrong, no matter what I misfigured, no matter what I miscalculated, my wife loves me, my kids put up with me, my grandkids don't even notice and Jesus still loves me.
I'll take it.
-
Skeater at least you got the right attitude sure makes life a lot easier.
-
Lmao... Life is Good...
-
Great outlook Lonnie!!
I got Hova's camera but the batteries were dead. Takes a 7.3 volt battry so may be a bit on the pics , Roy. :D
-
I glued up a hickory backed lemonwood ALB and she's in the oven as I type this. I guess we'll see in a few hours.
-
I'm probably jumping the gun here but I've done my design for the Bow Swap. I'm building an old school hill with straight limb back set. Back set will range from about 1.65 to 1.85 depending on the length of the bow.
I'll probably have to build two of these. The first with a SWAG on the stack and the second with a calculated stack to meet my recipients draw weight.
This will be for the form template. Doesn't get much simpler than this. :)

I took the hickory backed bow out of the cold hot box today and cleaned her up. Looks like she's gonna be a sweet bow.
-
Got my lams thickness sanded for a tri lam tonight.
...not tapered yet.
Been a long time..
..felt good to make some sawdust again....even if it was just sanding dust...lol
-
Looks like I'm going to watch it snow, got 3 inches in two hours already. That means I can tiller my bow all day!
-
Over a foot up here so far and 10 degrees.
-
Not that cold here yet. Think I need rehab. Its a week day not even noon and I'm calling it TILLER TIME.
-
Finishing a bow blank to go to Canada. Wenge riser, amberboo cores, Bocote veneers. 40 @28 and 58”D/R
-
Tried to make sure my fingerprints don’t match the FBI database. 40 grit on the belt doesn’t just grind, it grabs and rips.
-
Blew up a bow going out now to start another one.
Bvas, ouch been there that hurts. Unfortunatly they grow back. Fire is the only perment way to remove them i think.
-
Yeah it’s a throbbing sob. Worst part, it’s my ring finger on string hand. So it’s either gonna have to stop hurting or I’m gonna be shooting with two finger. I still got a couple weeks of deer hunting ;)
-
Glad that's all it was dude.
-
That's painful, been there !!
-
Oh ya, me too...
-
Worked on my hickory bow.Cut out the handle area and feathered in the riser and fade. Cut my limb tapers then scraped the belly of both limbs 5/8 to 1/2 at the tips. Start tillering tomorrow.
-
got my lams thickness tapered for a tri lam and built a new tiller tree.
Almost ready to order some glue.
-
Took too much material off the bottom limb of a tri-lam trying to tiller for equal limb timing. Going to have a thousand 40 lb bows before I get this figured out.
-
I decided that it's time to take a break before more things break.... I'm going fishing.
-
Sorry BMorv.
Learn from your mistakes and all..yadda..yadda..
...I feel your pain..I don't have a good one yet either.
-
Smoking a rack of beef ribs....Texas style
-
That sounds friggin awesome right now.
-
Got these three ready for the next step.

WOW

Those will be beauties. ILF or TD?

Awesome...
I see Bob and John. Is Roy's name on the other side? :)
-
I can't get enough of that wood combo. :clapper:
-
SWEET!!
-
Sweet riser Mike.
Finished fitting a riser template to the form.
And practiced shooting with two fingers :archer2:
-
All three look awesome...
-
Went to see the lumber man, guy wasn't even there kinda made me mad. Did get a decent farriers rasp while I was out. Had a guy on tradgang do me favor out of the kindness of his heart. Had another guy from tradgang insult me more than once. I like both of em.
-
Whad ya get?
-
When I say decent farriers rasp that's because my previous one never existed. It was 20 bucks at tractor supply tough 1 is the name brand its ok, When I wear it out ill buy a Nicholson. I own several but not rasp. The size of that thing is awesome. Yea I'm sticking my neck out, keep it clean Roy.
-
It's easy to do some serious damage with a farrier's rasp. Right up there with power tools. :biglaugh:
-
I spent about 3 hrs retuning and cleaning my bandsaw installed a new 3/8 blade realigned every thing cleaned the tires used CMT, man I was amazed at all the residue that builds up ,Agazzani 23 in. love that saw got it tuned like a piano !
-
Yesterday I took off a 3/4hp motor and installed a 2hp motor on my 14" bandsaw... It was a different size shaft on the motor so I got a new pulley from Ace Hardware... They only had a 3 1/2" pulley which is 1" bigger than my old pulley plus the new motor is a bit faster... So my saw went from about 2,700 fpm to 3,800 fpm... It will zip through some wood now... Do any of you all think 3,800 is too fast?? Will it hurt anything or is it unsafe?? I am thinking about ordering a 3" pulley and bringing it down to about 3,300 fpm...
-
I don't think it would be unsafe but might ware blades out a little quicker they might get hotter with the increased speed try it for a while and see with the cost of good blades going up I'm always looking to minimize ware.
-
.
-
They look delicious no matter how they met their end!
I spun some pine board blanks into arrow shafts for the upcoming turkey season.
-
I dug out this morning - 12" of snow and 40-50 mph winds yesterday. Couldn't forget the target! Got a 20 yard path. :D

web pageosage (http://https://imgur.com/user/Yellowood)

On Imgur site, click on the picture you want to post here. When it opens up, over to the right is a list of options. You want the second one from the bottom, "BB code". Click the copy box there behind it, then paste it in here. Remove the S from HTTPS and just make it HTTP in here before you add reply..
-
I can't open the link. Try the full reply form, click on the image button, then copy and paste the linked BBCode (the last option in imgur). That works for me.
-
Roy beat me to it....
-
Guess it works too, I always click the next to last.
-
Thanks guys Im using the Iphone app & when I click the post it just says copy link doesent give me other options (http://httpimgur.com/a/QNXYn)
-
I don't worry about the S doing it my way.

Really got lucky nice strait grain to ,wasn't even planing on cutting that day but just spoted it !

About ready to start tillering a bow for an orangutan with a 31.5" draw...
Scary pulling a wooden bow that far..
It's 68 tip to tip for a reason...
-
I’ll be following this one closely. I thought my 29.5” draw was tough. I wouldn’t attempt it. Bamboo, maple? Osage
-
nice looking bow there !
not bad for an ol fella
:D
-
Well the first bow I made for him was 64 tip to tip, and it's been 5 years and still shooting, so this one should be easier.
But if he calls me old fella one more time, I'll just keep it for me. :)
Osage belly, Red Elm core, boo backed.
-
Nice Im watching to ,sense its close to my draw bet it will be a sweet shooter at that length , I never reliesed tillering the longer draws was harder tell Bmorv told me sense thats what I tillered from the first bow on.
-

I'm in the same boat. Imgur is easy on laptop, but a PITA on the Iphone. I can't figure it out either.
-
I fine tuned my jig for grinding lam scarf joints. Actually, it was the operator that needed fine tuning. :)
Lam joints have been a bugaboo for me but the ones glued up today were pretty good.
-
I finished a bow and stared on a stave.
-
Worked in shop, talked on fone, and took down 4 ladder stands.
-
:bigsmyl:
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Well went to cut some Osage at a friends area. First cut, his brand new chainsaw got stuck and we had no backup saw. Took the saw off the bar and left with the bar still wedged in the tree. LOL
Got home and found a long package at the door. It was two awesome Yew slats from Canopyboy.
Thanks so much, Dave.
-
That sucks Roy I always try to take 2 saws been there like you , well at least it will be there when you get back.
-
Glued up an ILF riser. I may be crazy!!
-
X's 2.
-
Threw away all my certain brand of dipping and cresting lacquers. (The fumes started to really bother me and make me feel sick)
I cleaned out the dip tubes. Started over with the whole package of True North water based sealers, dips and cresting colors.
Unwrapped two doz Surewood hunter grade tapered shafts. Straightened 6. of them. (Though they didn't take much as they were very straight to start with). The Surewood premiums are darn near perfect. And honestly the hunter grade are just as good with a few grain run outs hear and there.
Opened a package from Three Rivers with fletching supplies. Since I never used the True North products before I started on just 3 of the new Doug Fir shafts. While experimenting with a scrap shaft with the new paints.
I was not expecting the water based to do as good a job as the lacquers. So far I'm impressed. The cresting paints to flow and cover better than the old lacquer. The metallic cresting paints really look good. They lay tight to the shaft and can easily do super fine professional looking lines. I tried dipping the clear of cresting, it works just fine, no running or bleeding at all. So far the learning curve has been easy. I'll see how the glue work and if it has target burn...etc soon enough.

Hey Roy, can you hook me up with some Osage next time I am up in Pa.?? I'd like about 4-6 logs, 24- 26" in length for accents and risers... I got my own saw... It would make it worth the drive to come out that way to see yah... :) How wide do the logs run?? Or we can do an even trade for some Sheoak...
-
Better bring two saws!
-
Don't jinx me... We may need a third... LOL...
-
Shredd, ya have any idea what your order would cost? Big $$$$$...
No one in their right mind would give away 4 - 6 Osage logs... :)
Just got the Husqvarna saw oiled, greased, and fueled up. Be heading out in an hour to get that Osage tree down and recover the stuck bar and chain. LOL
Never again do I go without a backup saw...
-
Good clean strait grained osage is like gold even in osage country I pass on 90% of the trees at least around here to many spiral crooked grain , Roy how is it over in PA ?
-
10-4... It's a little out of the way but I got a buddy in Tenn. that said he can hook me up... I'll just make a vacation out of it...
-
I got tired of fighting with my current drum sander to make a decent lam and ordered a Jet 10-20. Now I am going to stare at my checking account and cry.
-
Went out and bought my form materials !
-
Plan on doing nuthin! We will see how that works out!!
-
Shop cleaning and putting up day, no bow building, maybe a little flintlock building.
These things grab you like a good selfbow build;

wedges and an ax to pound them in will often get a saw out, if you are deep enough into the cut to give you space to do that.
but that will teach ya for running a little girlie husky- real men run a STIHL and drive Ford!!!!
-
Yeah, real men run a Stihl and push a Ford!!
-
+1 Stihl
-
I'm still using my 1979 McCulloch. :)
-
All my saws are stihl except a couple antique homelites. But don’t discount the huskies...or the chevies.

-
Very heavy!
For quite a few years I made enough wood to heat the house for the year. After three or four days on it The back was about done.
I stuck it in a big standing dead ponderosa once. My eye said it was going to Lean the other way but gravity disagreed. Luckily it was way in and I had a single bit axe and an eight pound mall.
-
LOL...

Chased a ring on 2 year old osage stave and split up some more osage Then Breakfest and nap....lol

I finished a 71 hour work week. :(
There are a couple of unfinished bows and a side quiver waiting for some attention. Maybe later...
Dave.

Working on another trilam. Osage, red elm, and boo. 68" tip to tip.
(http://i.imgur.com/XP5T7hZ.jpg) (https://imgur.com/XP5T7hZ)
5 3/8th" brace height here. You can see there is still a slight bit of reflex out past mid limb.
(http://i.imgur.com/S3Hv0td.jpg) (https://imgur.com/S3Hv0td)
Here it is with a 6.5" brace height and tillered to 22 inches thus far. You can see the limbs are pretty much straight now. That is normal for this design.
(http://i.imgur.com/AzVdWNb.jpg) (https://imgur.com/AzVdWNb)
Here it is after tillered to 22 inches. Still has a nice reflex at the tips.
(http://i.imgur.com/okPCkps.jpg) (https://imgur.com/okPCkps)
-
Sweet looking Roy at 68 in its got to draw smooth ! Im always impressed with your trilams .
-
Nice Roy. I like that profile at brace. Should make a nice shooter.
Did you offset the handle on this one?
-
Nice!
Roy, in that first pic, by the tip on left, I see a problem. :scared:
-
Looking Good... In the third pic... Is that gonna be your brace height???
-
I don't offset the handles, normally..
LOL Kenny, that's a buddies wedding picture, I was messing wif him.
Yes third is final brace height.
-
I thought it was you beggin for Osage.....
-
very spiffy Roy :D
looks like a blacktail killer to me!!
-
Nice bow, Roy. One day I'll try one of those.
Glued up an ASL and an RD today.

I love watch tillering vids...really helps train my eye.
-
Whoa....That will round out your tiller. Looking good.
I guess that's how you get your exercise...looks like you are on a rowing machine.
-
I like it that bow will be a barn burner fast bow !
-
let me tell you guys- i pull one of Roys 64" bows to 31.5" smooth and fast- no problems.
-
Yup and that's why I made this one 68".. :)

I had the opportunity to rasp and scrape a hickory backing off of a lemonwood ALB I was making when a splinter popped loose in the backing. I'm trying to save the lemonwood belly. Still more to do but at least I got this far.

...see the whole story in "Hickory Backed Lemonwood ALB..."

Pulled the RD and the ASL off the forms and cleaned them up a bit. It's too dang cold to do any more today!

What is the best size ?

I will try this size (https://i.imgur.com/MBp5Q7g.jpg)

Lookin good Ritchie!
I glued up a bocote riser /veneer with red elm core blank to go to the UK
And glued another riser for my swap bow. My sander ate the first one.
Weeellll , I told it to by mistake. :o
Oh well , I like this one better anyway, changed some stuff.
-
Looking Good Yellow... You'll be is B'ness soon...
Damn Kenny... There is probably a 1,000 different ways to F-up a bow...
-
1001 if you shoot in your basement. :o
Dave.
-
I finally got tired of fighting with the drum sander I had and ordered a new one. I picked it up last night so I spent the day making lams and veneers for my swap bow.
Thanks Kenny for all the advice and letting me loiter in your shop watching you make my last set of lams. Your sleds worked great and I picked up a few good tips and shortcuts from you that saved me a bunch of time. Some of them you probably don't even know you shared with me.
(http://i.imgur.com/YPTwuDm.jpg) (https://imgur.com/YPTwuDm)
-
Thanks Shredd a little here and there time wise is all I have so no hurry but would like to have it built over the next couple of months with all the help I get here !
-
Beautifull looking lams there skeat !
-
yup Roy, 174 fps with a 535gr arrow!!
:notworthy:
-
Good deal Lonnie! Glad to help!
Just ordered some Spectraply . So will be offering riser blocks and angle cut veneers soon.
I think I gave away my jig for angle cut but can build one in a few minutes when the Spectra arrives.
-
Yellowwood, looks like you got it figured out.
The bow that I wanted to come in at 55 came in at 72 :scared:
New target is 60#. I'm going to narrow it down and it should be ok once the limbs are finished.
-
Today I finally got around to cleaning up the hind leg sinew I got from deer season.
-
Nice Clint.
-
Welll, I've had some interest in forward handle longbows, soooo I dragged the danged form out, redesigned the whole bow and will lay one up on it. Heck, maybe it will be my swap bow.......
-
I hope to make a forward handle someday, I really like the look of them.
-
Still deciding some small details before glue up. So decided to work on my overlay.
-
Nice Brad. Those the walnut lams?
-
now that is something i am looking forward to kenny!
nice overlay mate
-
man Clint, you process sinew like you split osage.
i will never forget that post where you had , what was it 160 odd staves all processed- i forget the no exactly- but it was a pile-o-them

That was when I got 108 staves from one osage tree. I usually do things in big batches. Last time I worked on arrows I made over 30.
-
I discovered and made mistakes.
Discovered that my 60# RD is way over weight due to a mistake in stack calculation.
Realized that I cut the shelf wrong on an ASL and made it into a lefty.
:scared: :banghead: :(
-
hah- you fool- cos i never done dat!!! :bigsmyl: :o :o

Mike, LMFAO..
Bue, sweet..
-
Shot some limbs off of a new form today. I had a small flat spots in the old one that bothered me. The new ones turned out perfect. Started shaping these two. Got to get limbs started for them.
-
Bue, looking good.
-
Risers look great.
-
On the tiller tree for the first time, just roughly shaped.
58 pounds at 28, need to lose a few pounds, This one have a compound taper, a .002 forward taper that goes into a .004 reverse taper.

The unintended lefty is finishing into a real nice bow. Gonna be right around 45# @28".

Nice looking bow there Bue,Montery I might be able to get 1 pull on your bow and then a trip to the chiropractor , bet its fast !
-
Very nice, Bue.
-
That's some quality work Bue! Very nice.
-
I wanted to get in one more bow before I work on my swap bow. This is an all wood tri lam experiment using only laminates from Kenny. Hickory/maple/osage. I have 11 hrs in this bow so far. I didn't realize how much time I spend preparing the lams and backing when I do it all myself. I would be at around 30+ hrs right now if doing my own lams with a bamboo backing.

Roy, I'm not sure where to find someone to shoot it
But, can you explain more about your reverse tapers and why? How does that layup differ from a conventional single .002 taper?
Bmorv, that's a pretty and elegant piece of work. What is the backing on it?
-
Looks nice, Ben..
-
Thanks Roy and Monterey.
The backing is hickory spliced together. It's the 1st time I used a spliced backing. Worked out nice.

Repaired my tillering tree with a Kevlar rope after the old one broke while the bow was drawn. Now I can get back to business!

Monterey. I have a sled that grinds a laminate that will have a .002 forward taper and then goes into a .004 reverse taper. In this bow the reverse taper starts 7 inches from the string notch in order to make the tips stiffer. Not as much as a static tip, but will make a better string angle.
-
Bue, so the reverse taper takes the place of a tip wedge?
-
Yes, like a tip wedge.
Nice trilam you made.
-
I get it now.
I have some ol Damon Howatt Bows that are ground that way. One is a true static recurve.
I don't trust my own tapers but that's way out of my league!
-
Nice looking bow there Bue!
The Thunderstick MOAB is ground that way and I have a sled for a Jack Howard lam that someone had me make for them that is built like that.
I have a superlam that I use that is an .001 taper wih power lam and tip wedges built in. Changes the way things bend in the limb. Trying for better string angle on my 58" and found it works well in other bows also.

I am going to have to quit reading this stuff, it makes me want to try them out when I haven't successfully learned the simpler ways yet.

Started work on a hickory self bow for a guy. Someone had made it for him, but he hasn't shot it because it's too heavy for him. I'm taking some weight off to get it a little more manageable for him. It's 60" long and looks pretty nice other than this. The bottom limb has a pretty good twist to it. Can you guys tell if it's something I can steam out? It looks to me like it was cut out of line. It is enough that it causes the bow to twist in the hand while drawing. I'm gonna try to tiller out what I can, but other than that, what do you guys suggest?
http://i.imgur.com/dYEBJWm.jpg
Also, I can't figure out this stupid imgur crap, so go to the link. I'm sure y'all can figure it out. I did it right once but can't remember what I did.
-
yeah you can fix that. I would use dry heat instead of steam. I had one like that. used a picnic table and turned it on its side with the "hump" up and put a brick under the tip and one under the handle. oiled the spot where the hump started. heated it up with a hit gun and used a bar clamp to pull it down. problem is hicory can be stubborn. had to do it many times and even then it didnt stay perfect
-
It just looks so far out I wasn't sure. When I lay a straight edge on the bow it looks like that limb was cut out of line. How do you suppose I pull it down without crushing the edge of the limb, or putting a twist in it?
-
I tested out my new log loading trailer today. I cut a good size osage tree to try it out on. I found out real quick that the 2000 lb winch that someone gave me was not strong enough to work. I was pretty disappointed. I left the logs in the field for now. I'm ordering at least a 4000 lb winch.
At least the day wasn't a total failure. This is the first tree that I have pulled out with my new to me UTV. I got one straight 90" long section and one crooked log. I'll try to get some deflex and some reflex staves out of it. They will be fun to play around with and see what I can make from them. This tree had the top snapped off years ago from some freak hurricane winds.

It bet if ya offered to share with Roy he’d come over and just toss those on the trailer for ya.
-
Nice, Clint. Lot of weight for that trailer though... Ya otta split them right there in the field.
-
Sanded and sprayed a couple coats on the ilf riser.

I'm only hauling them a quarter mile to my splitting stand Roy. I don't split logs on the ground any more. That's rough on the back.

LOL, wait till you are my age.. I'll be 70 in June...
But, ya gotta do what ya gotta do for Osage... :)
I remember how easy it was when I was younger.. :)

I'm trying to take care of my back Roy. I used to load logs this size and bigger in the bed of my truck by myself. That wasn't very fun or smart. If I can get this trailer to work I'll be able to drag, load, unload, and split logs on my elevated stand without ever lifting them by hand.
Congrats on nearing 70. I'm closing in on 40.
You don't look a day over 68 in that picture.
-
Dang Roy, that's a fine pile of osage you got there, but one of them has a pretty wild looking growth.
Since I am still in that uncertain stage about my lams and hesitating the glue up, I decided to make some veneers from a bit of the spalted maple I have setting back. I think I am going to like them.

LOL, ya all I need is a dumb hat with horns.. :)

Those look good Skeater. Are you going to stabilize them before lay up?
I got a chunk of myrtle from Gary Schuler (thanks for the lead Kenny) and it's a nice looking piece of wood. Should get a couple risers out of this.
My first experience with myrle. My swap bow is going to be an old school hill style with back set. I'm at a loss for what color glass to use. I'm thinking that bamboo cores would be appropriate.

what about putting a block purchase on that a frame of yours Clint?- that might give you the power- will just slow things down thats all.
maybe you need a little slowing down anyway!!
young fella!

I ordered a 4000 lb super winch. It should be here on Wednesday. I'll use a snatch block set up if I still need it.
-
Yup a couple pulleys will double the pulling power.
Might rip your truck in half. LOL
-
Redoing a form and ran a screw into my bandsaw blade. Pretty much killed it. I'd had it on there a long time anyway so it didn't hurt as bad....
-
not if he's using a Ford. " Built Tough" :D

Well, I've m some progress on my latest bow. Something I'm building for a lady up in Denver. Once I get this one done, I can start (re) building my "victim's" bow.
This is a picture of the blocks of maple and redheart that I used to make the accent strip.

Hot wings for breakfast? LOL

I don't know bout hot wings, but some times a cold piece of fried chicken aint bad for breakfast.

Up early this morning got a coat of sealer on the risers. Limbs are next on the build with some stippling on the grips.

The guys that are getting them are going elk hunting in September.

Hell Yeah... Looking Good...

Broke a veneer just before mixing glue. That was the good part, no more veneers like that.....
-
That's a bummer kenny.
-
At least I didn't have glass and cores lathered up....
-
Those look amazing, Brushwolf!
-
Been wanting to build a three piece longbow for a while. Glued up some plywood for a form. Got riser pattern made and the footed pattern laid out. Drew the bow profile out looks like it will string up. Time shall tell. . :dunno:

Got one in the oven today.
Didn't happen wifout pichers...

Got my bottom form routed and stiffeners on before I got called into work (https://i.imgur.com/9IQBSEC.jpg)
-
Looks good. How thick is that angle and did it straighten it out for you?
-
The angle was 1 3/8 x1/8 ,it straiten the 3/64 difference out it's dead strait & square now plus free standing the only down side it's heavy now, but not to bad !
-
I had to do that on one of mine as well. It's a pain in the butt to do but a small price for peace of mind.
-
It actually was easer then I anticipated I just clamped the 2 peaces of angle together marked the centers put a couple of 2x4 blocks under them & drilled used one angle for a drill form put the bolts in maybe took 1 hour.
-
Got one outa the oven and off the form.
-
Well Yeller... That form don't look like it should move too much... Good job...
-
Very nice form.. I shot a 30 target 3D course today in the snow.. Was cool and I still have all my arrows.
-
That's good Roy I always manage even on a dry day to loose some .
-
Took a half draw shot at a Eurasian collared dove in the back yard. Feather a fletch came half loose at the shot and the arrow fell short. First shot at game for the year. :biglaugh:
-
Got the form top smoothed up put formica backing strip on the bottom one ,making riser template for cut out, Burnt the wife"s honey dew list ;) (https://i.imgur.com/WMrlCPA.jpg)

I finally got to test out my log arch trailer that I've been working on this winter. It took longer than loading them by hand but it sure saved my back. To unload them I just dragged them off the back with my utv.

That's pretty cool, Clint. Looking forward to seeing some nice scrub-buster osage in a few months. I have some hill cane for you.
-
Sounds good Pat.
-
I have an osage log loader, unfortunately I didn't have it for the 18 or so years I was seriously cutting osage.
This is the last tree I cut 2 years ago and probably the last osage tree I will ever cut. I have gotten too old to do what I once did.

Yeah... That's what they all say... :)

Threw some salt on sidewalks and deck, danged ice!!
Glued up a bow blank, took another out of a different form and tillered and cut sight window in on it and packed up to ship....
Then worked on my (victim's)trade bow a bit.....

I made my endless loop string jig.

Since I was waiting for some epoxy to dry on my victims bow I decided to tinker with the first set of limbs I made that were a bust. I shortened them by an inch and worked on the tiller. It's still a bit off but I will get to that eventually.
But I also figured I could start on a practice riser to get the feel for making the shape I want since this is the first take down I have made. I am not totally displeased with where it's at but I have lots of work left to do so there are plenty of opportunities for learning experiences :dunno:

Trying to lose weight.
Bow came in about 8# heavy.
Trapped just the back glass and lost about 2#.
Going to go a little further and do glass plus one lam deep.

Nice Kenny
-
Hain't no wonder ya shot em, they are all blind...
LOL..
Very nice bud.
-
Well, I made good progress on the bow for the swap. I also built .001" and .002" taper sleds. Also a flat sled for parallel lams.
I freaking love this drum sander. Honestly don't know how I got along without it. I've built more than 50 bows with my homemade jig, but the 16-32 I bought is a huge improvement.
The next upgrade I'm going to make is a good dust collector. My humongoloid shop vac can't even begin to keep up with this thing. After that. I'm thinking a 6 X 89 edge sander... Hmmm.
-
Get one of these. Work fantastic..

I got the Delta shop master dust collector about 10 years ago use it on my 22-44 it works good and has been flaw less, I took the wheels off and mounted it on the wall ! I put a long hose on it so I can reach every thing I have a small tight shop !

Made a Yew bow(almost) At 70 pounds at 28 inches on the tiller tree a slight explosion happened. Well, that Yew is a tricky one.

-
Nice, Bue.. I been there done that.
-
A slight explosion? Looks like a big one to me! Sorry to see that happen.
-
Dang Bue!
Sorry it happened Bud.
-
Man, I bet that was spectacular !
I didn’t do anything that exciting!
-
Yeah... Sorry to see that but I bet that had to be somewhat exciting in a twisted sorta way... Hope you didn't get splinterized...
I'd probably be pissed and laughing at the same time...
-
Nice looking skull mounts Kenny. I like the palmation on the center rack.
Sorry about the bow Bue. That's a bummer.
Today I cut a trail to a big double trunk osage tree that I want to cut. I didn't bring my big saw so I looked for something smaller to cut. I found this fallen tree close by.
I got 2 full length sections and one smaller piece. I should have known something was up when it was this difficult to get a split started.
Every now and then a tree will fool me. I didn't expect this from looking at the bark. I'll blame it on the moss.
-
Looks like there will be some snakey bows in that one, must be interesting to find such a log.
-
Ouch, Clint.
-
Clint, can you see that snake in the bark very well before you cut it?
-
Sorry to see your bow blow Bue , Clint I realy like your spliting stand , back saver '' that log definitely has some character !
-
I seen it in the first picture, Kenny.
I'd have never cut that tree...
:wavey:
-
That does look like some snakey bows are in there...jeesh.
Good luck Bud.
I've got to clean up some boogers and see what the heck happened under all that glue and plastic..
-
Nice Zradix. Got some deflex on that one! Hope it works out.
-
Yeah...trying for a little more of a forward handle/grip by gluing a thick "powerlam" or whatever under the back.
This way I'm thinking I can dish out the grip darn near to the belly lam.
Not sure if I put quite enough reflex in the tips...we'll see.
I was afraid that moving the grip an inch or so forward on a bow with too curvy of limbs would leave the string laying on the limbs at a 6-7" brace.
I did put a little flip in the tips..about 1.25" from flat.
..who knows...lol :dunno:
-
Hope it works out for you, John..
-
Thanks Roy.
Thing that really steamed me is when I was mocking things up I noticed about 1/3 of my c-clamps were missing from the box of em I keep at work.
No one fessed up.
Didn't have $$$ in the budget for more...so here's to hoping..lol
-
That totally sucks John, hate a thief!
-
I'm not an expert, but I think you have the right amount of reflex especially if this is the first of this design. Look at the difference between the low in your deflex to the tips. Anything more than that and you would be fighting with stringing it, and no telling what the tiller should look like.
-

Sometimes I can see it in the bark. I didn't on this one though. I have a tree that you can see the bark snakes back and forth all the way up. I'm going to cut it one of these days. It might be something special or it might be firewood. It's on the property line and leaning the wrong way. It's going to take some work to get it to fall where I want it.
-
Originally posted by Yellowwood:

That stand has definitely been a back saver. My yard is sloped. The poles are sunk in at ground level on the uphill side. I can drag a log in front of them and then roll it to the end. I can get the log to the perfect working height without lifting it. It's very easy to roll them back and forth to walk the split down both sides of the log.
-
Cut some plywood for the trade bow form and fitted a riser to an RD. Had to cut the glue joints out of the lams and re glue em cause none of them were fitted all the way together and were thin at the joints.
Don't know how I did that to all three  :(
-
Old age..
-
Some nice looking work being done.
-
Ya know, Roy, you could be more like bvas and if you have nothing good to say don't say nothing.
I think that's a twofer. :)

That is sharp, Brad..
-
Gonna be sharp Brad!
I made a string for my victim's bow, did shop work, took dog on a shedless antler hunt.
-
Bvas thats a awesome combo beautiful man sweet !
-
I went out to do some tillering on my bamboo backed palm bow that I have been on and off with since last year. Each time I strung it, it stretched out the string until it touched the riser. Even when I twisted it really short. Then the palm popped a little splinter. I fixed that and it did it again, so I put the bow away before I started getting grumpy.
So then I started building a portable gun rack for my buddy's skeet shoots. Two of the boards I had for it had become twisted and then I made some wrong cuts, so I said to myself it's time to give up for today.
Some days I just can't seem to get it together. :dunno:
Nice weather we're having though! I think I'll go barbecue some chops. :)
Dave.
-
I was stuck waiting on the finish of my swap bow to dry so I started on a new form. I may get sued by Kenny for copyright violations but he may just laugh at me and tell me it won't work.
I took his modified form template and converted it to a take down.

-
Dave, hope ya don't burn yourself. LOL
Nice, Lonnie..
-
Yep, it will work, you will need to back off the stack or it will be heavy.
And yer plywood is running the wrong way.....
It'll get better Dave...
Oh, Lonnie, just kiddin on the plywood... :D
-
Oh, I got some orders out and glued up a bow blank......
-
Good luck on the chops...Sounds GOOD!
-
MMMMMM! barbecued pork chops. There's nothing like a nice bone in chop for flavour. :)
I was a bit worried that if my run of luck continued, I'd run out of propane half way through.
I think part of my problem is that I have been doing so much OT at work that I haven't been in the shop literally in months. Use it or lose it. Tomorrow is another day. I'll give it another go.
Dave.

Tonight my wife and I went and ate sushi. It is our 40 anniversary. :saywhat:

Got my tri lam sanded down to profile last night.
Might have to glue on another layer for the grip...not sure yet.
Before that though, I think I'll round out the belly, carve in some grooves and get it on the tree to see how she bends.
...probably be asking for some guidance at that point...lol
....not going to cut in the shelf or anything till I see if she's pretty even or not.

Good luck bud.
Just got done doing a similar thing.
Kids b-room shower needed a tear down from another shared wall b-room (didn't feel like replacing tile in the kids b-room).
Hell of a mess, had to remove a sink and vanity etc.
Luckily had some left over matching paint so I didn't have to paint the whole room.
Tell ya what..I like that fast set dry wall mud you can buy in dry form in the little boxes an Home depot. Doesn't seem to shrink or crack at all. Saved me a day.

you bet John I really don't care for dry wall work dusts up the whole house well got the plumbing done and didn't feel like working on the riser so started scraping on a little osage/sinew bow just in case Kenny doesn't come threw  (https://i.imgur.com/hs1XyaH.jpg)
-

Kenny will come thru! LOL
But Roy sent $.12 extra and since you are younger than him, I figured you wouldn't mind a day or 2...... :biglaugh:
-
Yea go ahead Kenny age before beauty ,especially sense he spent the grand kids Xmas budget on it extra ;)
-
Glued and screwed plywood for form on Kenny's forward handle bow. Glued up tips and accent on a bow I've been trying to finish up.
-
Hope you dont mind me jumping in.
-
Hey Roy you may have got yours before me ,but I bet mine is faster

Roy stop throwing your shoes thru the chrony!!
-
That’s like my water meter crept it has a 0 at the end ...
-
Yellowwood, you started shooting your compound again? If it came from a longbow, I want to know the deets.
-
He's shooting a bow Kenny made. I have a Kenny bow too and it's fast.
-
Oh sorry, I missed that. I still want to see the bow. That's pretty fast even for glass.
-
Benton I haven't shot a compound sense 1994 that's Kenny's latest generation forward handle bow that looks like a Egyptian composite bow ,but there is still some hidden fps in it yet , string wise and so fourth , but Roy shot the optional ballistic arrows thru his
-
I posted the same time as you Benton I will post it when it's done but I'm still working on the 64 in last Gen. bow to ,so it might be a bit , but the forward handle bow will make a awesome blind bow !

Is there a pic floating around of this bow that I missed?
I love looking at forward handle bows
.....especially ones that burn arrows like that one must...
-
Kenny posted it a little while back I have some pics captured I will post later if I have the time to get to the real computer instead of the ipad , maybe Kenny has some updated pics !
-
...just stalked some of Kennys posts....felt kinda creepy...sorry Kenny...lol
Is it the swap bow with the wenge and "light wood" in the riser?
Darn sharp looking bow either way.
-
Nope, not that one, but same form. Still working on that bow, almost done, and I will take some outdoor pics this weekend and post em up.
Thanks!
-
Haha John. If that's what constitutes a creep, then I would get the creep of the year award every year. I have to hold back from answering questions directed to Roy....How long do you make your risers Roy?
Roy makes his risers 12" long, but sometimes he's feeling crazy and makes them 13"....LOL
-
"Roy makes his risers 12" long, but sometimes he's feeling crazy and makes them 13"....LOL"
I almost commented on that, but it might ruin my saint chances.....
-
lol
This is a great place to hang out...lol
-
Cut and routed forms, sanded bow to prep for spray. Hoping to have both bows done for turkey season. Sounds like the forward handle is a speed demon.
-
LMAO at Sister McKenzie..
-
I'm working on a forward handle bow now...

:saywhat:

Nah, it's just slid together backwards... :)
-

Shoulda known you had your stuff together...lol

Had to run get a new bandsaw blade today and danged if the store didn't have Canary Wood at 50% off. So now I have even more glass I need to save up for. I need a cheaper hobby.

Well I got one of my laminations glued up and also went ahead and glued up my limb tips got them in the oven now. I'll sand a bevel and cut them in half and have them ready for when the time comes

We need a drooling emoji
-
Nice Travis. I love it. "Sister to my bow swap bow". I'm doing the same thing. It's so hard to make an awesome bow and then give it away. Ya gotta make one for yourself too!
-
Yup Benton.. Soon as I finish Mitch's 2017 swap bow, I'm gonna make Roy a bow. I haven't made myself a bow in 3 years... :(
-
Thanks guys, kennym sent me some nice materials.
-
Very nice recurve :)
-
Beautiful! I love the riser.
Dave.
-
Nice combo on that takedown
Got my bow sanded and ready for finish. :)
Now I just need to decide on what to use
Thinking I’m gonna try automotive clear in the hvlp since I already have everything. But I may get some flex additive to Put in it.
-
If I had a spray rig I'd would use T-bird.
Thinking about getting all set up so I can in the future.
-

Honestly, you can skip the flex additive. I've finished tons of bows with automotive urethane and I've never had trouble with the finish cracking.
Shoot.... Hope I didn't just jinx myself. ;)
-
What brand are you using Craig?
-
I use Eastwood's European clear when I'm after a gloss fininsh and I use their Rat Rod satin for a matte finish.
I'm sure it's not an ultra premium product, but it works very well in my experience with it.
The gloss only comes in a gallon, but the satin can be had in a quart. The quart of satin, plus the bottle of activator is about $50, plus shipping.
It's more expensive than hardware store polyurethanes, but it's still pretty reasonable. I typically end up using about 3-4 oz per bow, so it's actually pretty economical.
-

I will probably try TBird in the future, but I already have some leftover auto clear. Might as well try it first.
-
I hear ya.
-
I finaly got time to unwrap my glued up riser do you guys think Im still using to much smooth on with this much squeeze out the clamps weren't overly tight, I put it on with a putty knife but always afraid of not using enough ?
https://imgur.com/gallery/BVoyI
-
I'd rather unwrap and deal with squeeze out than wonder about the glue joints. :)
You could probably cut back a little, but while smooth on isn't cheap, neither is starting over!
-
Yea I was thinking the same way Mike I have been using a putty knife to put it on maybe I will try the brush .
-
Try those rubber/plastic things they spread body putty with.
But more is better than less.
-
What are they Roy ? Like a rubber putty knife ?
-
I use a pc of lamination, 1/8 x 3/4 x 9 because I always have em around. Down side is sanding splinters off all corners so they don't get in the glue.....
-
They come in assorted sizes...
(http://i.imgur.com/uV5RXJ6.jpg) (https://imgur.com/uV5RXJ6)
-
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Those are what I use. Cut them in half and get two outa one. Cheap enough to just throw away and not worry about cleaning.
-
Ok thanks I will look at the big box store over the week end
-
I use the same thing...cut them into smaller pieces. I like the flex.
-
See, I know all about building them gwass bows....
-
I use a piece of a lam like Kenny does. Hit it with some fine sandpaper and sorta round the end. Throw away when done!
Ok, so what did I do today?
I layed out some limb templates for designs that I'm going to repeat. A 60 to 62 inch RD 1.5" at the fades and a 60 to 52 inch RD 1.25 at the fades. Plus an ASL.
Worked on finishing an RD that's about ready to go. Just needs a leather handle wrap and it's very own string.

Nice sleek look on that r/d Monterey!!
Today I went with the daughter to practice maneuverability for her driving test :scared: :scared:
-
Nice bow, Mike...
-
Today I found the thickest osage sapwood I've ever seen. No way I'm removing all of that. I'll make some sapwood bows with heartwood handles. Splitting it off isn't an option. This is small diameter (6"-8") second growth that almost looks like it grew over a dead core in spots. There are old borer holes in the center of it. The sapwood and first bit of heartwood look clean. It has nice rings. The sapwood is pretty flexible when it's fresh. I might rough out a bow and clamp it to a reflex caul to dry.

Finished forward handle form. Finished 3pc.limb forms. Got a bow glued up and in the oven.
-
So Robert, which form did ya glue up on? LOL
-
I worked on my next bow a bit. The riser was already made up and I am still torn on using it for these limbs. The maple for these limbs, believe it or not, came from the big orange box store. I could not, in good conscience, leave it there for someone else.

Those are awesome, Lonnie.
-
Perfect use for them.
Beautiful find!
-
That's a sweet RD monterey. Simple, sleek lines and I like the osage.
That maple is purdy Lonnie. Wish my orange box store carried it.
-
Mike I really like the slender look of that bow bet its fast ?
Clint thats a lot of sap wood I found a BL like that , my orange box doesent have any thing near that Lonnie awsome find !
-

Ours doesn't carry it but this one snuck in to the pile somehow.

Taking the plunge on a 3 pc TD recurve. Only made TD LBs so far. I had a template I made a few years ago copied from a newer design by a big time bowyer. It is not exact for sure, close maybe. The tips dont come to full 90 degrees from the string line. I chickened out!
Glued and baked up my first limb. Kind of surprised at the spring back off of the form. I might have to reduce the radius on a new form someday.
-
64 inch test bow Kenny, trying to get a bow done so I can try out the forward handle form. It's next on the today list. Had a heck of a time tilering it today. The lower limb is narrower than the upper. Looks like the power lam went south a 1/4 inch at glue up. Profile looks perfect though. Frustrated, but I do like this stuff. However I think this has gone from a hobby to an obsession. May need to start a bowyers anonymous meeting on here :banghead:  :biglaugh:
-
lol...I think this is it!

You did the right thing. It would have been a federal offence if that wood ended up as part of a shelf in someone's closet.
Dave.

Robert, one thing about test bows is they teach you something, now if I could remember some of it! LOL

brushwolf...... :scared: :scared: :scared:

That is some nice osage!
Dave.

I forgot to mention the rash I got after stippling some cocobolo this morning. It's been awhile but every so often the rosewoods are hard on me.

Mike, you gotta tell us more about that bow. Those are impressive hooks!

The bow pulls 56@ 28. It a static bow I've been building for a couple years now. The bow is 1 7/16 wide with a thick core makes for a stable platform. I think the pics make it look more radical than it is. The bows are very quite especially with me being a three under shooter. I'm thinking of building a carbon backed limb soon thinking it should crack 200 fps. Time will tell though got to love this stuff.
-
BrushWolf, that's a looker! Some good looking osage in the limbs.
-
Very nice, Mike.
-
Mike that is absolutely stuning , Lonnies right need the drool emoji ,love the yellow wood Awsome bro !!!
-
Your bow stand is cool too!
-
Here's the cocobolo the made me itchy. It's the first time in a long time to bother me. I had a piece of bocote years ago that did it. Anyway finished the stippling today and worked on the other Osage bow.

Oh , and on the coco allergy. I wasn't at first, but it got to the point I don't handle it. Breaks me out and swells my eyes, even with all the dust collection I can give it.....
-
Beautiful work all the way around Mike!!
-
Stunning

Wow!!!

It's my fault I didn't wear a mask. I usually wear gloves and long sleeve shirt also. Just got lazy.

Maybe I should build myself a couple spare bows before that happens. Yeah that's what I'll tell the better half. She will understand :nono:

I believe that cocobolo and macasser has become my favorite combination. I'd like to reverse the woods on the next one it be killer.

Mike.. Stunning...
Awesome.....

Dave.

Wow... Purty Hot....

Vakker. (Beautiful in Norwegian) :)

Finally reworked my Model #1 longbow form from my prototype. I added an extra inch of reflex at the tips. I'm hoping for a bit more cast than the original without sacrificing stability and smoothness.
I'm building a 64" bow off this form to start, though I've designed it to allow anywhere from 62"-66".
I'll keep you posted, we'll see if this dog hunts or not!
-
Helped skeater find lost topics. Lol
-
LOL Brad..
-
Had a chance to work on YOUR stick ole timer?
-
Ah Ya.
LOL
It's ready to be cut out...
Had 4 guys in shop Saturday so I don't get much work done when teaching others.
-
Gotta keep the rookies from making.......well......rookie mistakes. ;)
-
Yes and it can happen in 30 seconds and destroy the bow.....
-
Been some time since I have been able to get back in the shop. Between being down 9 officers at one point and then going back to school to get my BA in criminal justice has taken up all my time. Any who... with turkey season about a month away I wanted to sand down and clear a bow I completed last fall. I ended up knocking it on something and chipping the edge of the shelf. So this week I should be able to get the clear on it again.
Hope all is well with everyone! I miss you guys and will be back soon enough with some new bows. Going to make a pair for myself and my girlfriend in the next month.

It would be great to get some of the details on working with the woven carbon on recurves. Stack height/weight, etc. I've only worked with the Uni carbon on longbows so far.

I talked to OMC before I glued anything. They told me it will add 7-10 pounds but also depends on design. I made a stack based on a 40# formula ended up with a 60# bow. I narrowed the limbs just a bit and ended up with 55#. Now 55 is on the stiff side of what I like but it doesn't feel like 55. I have checked weight several times and the scale doesn't lie.
-
Bue that looks super I like a dark colored bow.
-
Did you pick up any performance with the carbon?

For the sake of clarity, when you calculated your stack did you use the stack for the 40# bow and then add the carbon, or did you use the 40# stack with the carbon included in the stack?

I used a 40# limb stack and used the carbon in place of glass. I figured if it added 10# I would end up with a 50# bow.
The layup was. Carbon
Taper
Stable kore.
Veneer
Glass
As for performance it wouldn't shoot my 340 carbons set up for a 58#er. I had to cut an 1" off and lighten up the point. The stability of the limbs are awesome but I haven't chronograph it yet.

Looking forward to watching the video Eric!
Got to love those dogs Roy - have two that are like kids myself. Bow is looking good.
Lonnie - I will refrain from commenting on your horny carnivore comment! :goldtooth:
-
I have the birdseye bow all but done. I need to let the finish cure and start shooting it in. It came in at 45#@26/52#@28. There are some flaws in the finish but I guess that is rattle can coupled with inexperience. I won't complain.
-
Dang, I have more pics but the system keeps giving errors.
-
It looks good, Lonnie.

Nice looking bows Lonnie and Robert.

Sweet looking bows. :notworthy:
-
Got rained out for work so finished the front profile on my current bow I'm cutting the knocks at 62 in. instead of 64 in. it feels a little light due to being 1/8 narrower width then stack calc.
-
Wow so many neat bows being built!
All I did was build this box to ship a long bow. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Two for one pic...
I glued up another bow today and put a bigger pulley on my Little Beast sander... It upped the speed a good bit on the belt...

Hope everything works out for ya Lonnie, you inspired me to start a 3 pc. takedown. So I started it today but now I'm thinking a horn bow may be more appropriate. :biglaugh: Best wishes.

Looking good Ritchie
-
Thanks Brad been a good learning curve for me from wood bows :archer2:
-
I think it looks pretty good... It looks like it needs to be stiffened up off of the fades but that could just be an illusion because you have a lot of deflex going on there... The only real way to tell is to shoot her... Do some speed tests if you are after performance...
Good Job...
-
I suppose it looks ok... :goldtooth:
Nice job, Ritch..
-
Nice looking bow YW.
-
Yellowood your bow looks good.
-
Thanks fellas it was a lot easer making this one with all the help from you guys & watching the talent around here ! :coffee:
-
That full draw looks great, 31” looks good on the bow. Glad you didn’t pike it , but you may lose a couple finish sanding on limb edges. Curious, did ya change weight any when you cut shelf in?
-
I havent cut the shelf yet & I already sanded the edges maybe some touch up if I can stay 45 ish I will be good I would bet at 45 lb 31 in it would be ass fast as 52 lb@ 28 in. Well see !
-
Sprayed a few coats of finish on Roy's bow. Letting it dry and cure before we finish it up and get it sent off.

Nice, ya cut them short?
Surprised that Stihl could cut it..
-
Nice, ya cut them short?
Surprised that Stihl could cut it..
Yep. Tree was kind of a tangled mess from the landowner digging it out with the backhoe. These were taken from the smaller limbs I could access.
Base of the tree is about 2’ diameter and splits into 3 trunks. Root ball is still attached. Scares me a little cutting on trees like that. You just can’t tell what it’s gonna do when cut.
And a Stihl is like a sore you know what.......ya can’t beat it :goldtooth:
-
My Husqvarna chainsaw eats Stihls for breakfast son...
Go back and cut them 3 trunks into 36 inch pieces....
-
+1 Stihl is King !!! Sorry Roy (not really sorry just being polite😃) but I made this make shift endless loop string jig this morning out of 2x and actually works good !
-
Cool..
Prolly all your stihl could do to cut through that 2 x 4:)
I used to make endless loop strings years ago.
-
My Stihl has been acting up, don't wanna run. Got to work on it...
-
My Stihl has been acting up, don't wanna run. Got to work on it...
Prob got a husqvarna stuck in the carberator.
-
You beat me to it Brad, but I've been doing some light brush trimming, so it was an easy fix, only clogged the air cleaner a little....
-
Well I all ready dont like these endless loop strings to noisy and at least with the angular bow and more vibration, I only shot about 30 arrows I will give it a little more time but I think Im back to flemish !
-
lol
-
Well Yellow... Would you consider that a Redneck or Hillbilly string jig?? As long as you can git er' done... That's all that matters... I gotta build a jig myself... Just got the string and such... Just need something to hang it on...
-
Now I'm all man, well thats what i tell the kids- wife wont listen anymore :smileystooges:
But, i drive a Mansized Ford, and run a Stihl.
feeling sorry for the Husky girls on here, so i thought i would bolster their cause a bit :biglaugh:
Here's, Dan our faller, dealing with a little 7' Sitka blowdown.
The Husky has a 5' bar on it.
Dan had to buck the rootwad off, ( what he calls, disconnecting the tree) then he bucked it into rounds for processing.
Dan is the most phenomenal faller I have seen, and we have a lot of "big wood" fallers up here.
I guess when a man is held in the highest regard and revered amongst his fellow fallers, then he is certainly top drawer.
I deal with a fair amount of sizable wood up here, but i would never touch things like this, Dan makes it look so easy.
Problem with blowdowns of this size, is that they take a lot of other trees with them, and everything is preloaded, and just waiting to snap on you, like a loaded rat trap.
-
Yellowwood-Not sure how your jig works. But you need to be able to pull all strands EQUALLY tight. If some strands are looser than others, the string will be noisy. I had this problem in the beginnng. I was pulling each strand too tight, and by the time I finished my last pass the first strands would be loose. I learned to make each strand just snug, then pull them all tight together before wrapping the serving.
Fujmo- Timber cutters have all my respect. I’ve been thru numerous chainsaw and felling classes. And that doesn’t bother me a bit. But dealing with blowdowns with the rootball attached is a whole different creature. The main trunk of the Osage I was cutting on was about 5’ off the ground because of the rootball. Hard to tell which way the tree would spring or roll when cut apart. I decided a trip to the ER wasn’t worth a little bit of bow wood.
-
yup, wise move Bvas. :)
I have seen dan cut the loaded wood around the blowdown, they look like toothpics, but may be 18" diameter, and seen them flick across the forest like BBQ skewers.
you really have to know your stuff.
This guy Dan, who works for us, used to be on danger tree patrol (with his falling partner) for years, for the local logging companies- dealing with trees other fallers couldnt figure out, dealing with snags, slides and blowdowns.
he is not very tall, but he flicks that saw around like nothing.
look at the powerhead- it comes up to his knees :scared:
-
Shredd its a hybrid of both HB & RN , Bvas the jig is basicly just 4 post but I had a stretcher bar and stretch the crap out of the string before serving the loops and stretched it again after I will shoot it in good tomorrow maybe it will stretch out more !
-
I dug birdshot out of a hop hornbeam stave. Stave is stable condition, gonna be in traction all night to correct a spine alignment injury but I expect it to make a full recovery.

John, ya wonder what story took place to find lead in a tree.... I found a .22 bullet once sawing lams out..
Kenny, stuff like that fascinates the heck out of me. It had to have been in there for a very long time. I pulled out three of them, might see if I can imbed them in the belly side of the tips as deccoration, they've been together this long.
-
Bvas you where right I put about another 80 arrows threw this bow today and string , I adjusted the brace height as the string stretched in and it got considerable quieter in the end ,I made a 14 strand string I think I'm going to try a 12 strand next , John I knows I have put shot in trees squirrel hunting not on purpose ! But none the less it's there .
-
Put the first coats on this bow today... I am keeping this one for myself... I decided to go Plain Jane and just let the grain do the talking... It is 39#... I can shoot this bow all day long... It is 2lb. lighter than my other bow and 6fps faster... I'll be 57 in two days and this just happens to be bow #57...

I like it simple but elegant plus a all day shooter at that weight ! :clapper:

That's a nice looking bow. I like your idea of going down a bit in weight.
I'm going to build one for myself too. Hopefully before elk opens. Haven't made a bow for myself in over 15 years.
-
New bow under construction. This one is for the winning bidder at a charity auction. Bloodwood and grey super actionwood. I got Bingham's to sell me a big block of it so I could make my own spliced limbs. The guy who bought it wanted a grey and red theme.

Looking Good Johnson... That bow is gonna look Sweet...
Thanks Guys... Yes, it is Sheoak...
Yeah I am very comfortable just under 40#... I made a 32# bow a while back for women and kids to shoot... Just for chits and giggles I shot about 100 arrows through it... I found that I was very accurate with it... So I decided to go down in weight for a practice bow... Plus I spend more time making them than shooting them... If it was the other way around I would probably be comfortable with a 43- 45# bow...
Monterey, Go make yourself a nice one... You are over due...
-
I'm going to do that. Now you got me thinking I need two. A light one for practice and heavier one for hunting.

I had a new bow student in my shop yesterday, my nephew Wes, he was one more hard worker. We almost got his new hickory bow on the tillering tree.
I have been teaching the craft for the last 20 years for free. I was getting discouraged because I had so many guys quit after they saw bow making was a lot of hard work. My last 4 or 5 students have been work horses and a joy to teach.
Here is Wess learning the craft.
-
Yup Eric.
I love teaching new guys in my shop also.
Made many good friends doing so.
-
I have four daughters.
Two of them love to help out in the shop. That's the best part.
-
Charge em 50 bucks, Eric. Then they will appreciate it more. :)
-
Well...
Started off with great intentions..
Had the morning off work.
Kids at school.
Wife at her store.
Great time to work on my bow right?...WRONG!
So I'm doing some sanding.
Get a call from the school..
My 12yr old Daughter broke her arm in gym class.
Not too badly...a buckle break in her right radius near the wrist (caught herself falling down backwards)
At the specialist getting ready to get a cast.
She's mostly heart broke over the probable end to her soccer season..that has been put on hold already due to the fact it still looks like January around here.
She's a tough cookie..didn't cry till the Dr. said soccer was probably out...lol
Stubborn as they come (gets that from me) with the most joy for life and the kindest hearted person I've ever known (must be her Mom's fault)
...Looking on the bright side...I do get the whole day off I guess...just not the ideal situation.
-
Sorry to hear that, John...

Dang gobblers :banghead: I took my band saw apart cleaned every thing set it up for a new 1/2 blade and re sawed some lams for riser & tip overlays drug out some riser blocks to play with color combo's for the one I'm starting ! [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Finished shaping out my new design. My last design I was having some stacking and I wanted to change the riser to look more seamless with the limbs. This one only gains 2.6lbs per inch between 28 and 31. Seems to really zip an arrow. I’m going to shoot it for a bit before I finish sanding it and spray it.

Worked in shop on gluing up some custom spliced lams, rode the atv to look the lease over, worked on the new deer stands, and spent waaay more money than I shoulda.....
-
I got my yew/yew/boo to 21 inches on the long string and it is looking awesome. Tips are coming down to 8 inches, time for a 4" brace and more tillering.
Rode Atv to pond to bring aerator compressor up to do a rebuild on it.
Busted 8 deer out of the clover plot when I got to the pond.
One was a piebald yearling doe.
Almost all white on both hind quarters.
I gotta get my trail camera back out there.

Oh well, guess luck was on his side today. Cool experience though to have a big Tom spittin and drumming right in my face.
-
Next time...
-
Try again tomorrow. :goldtooth:
-
Got another riser cut out and glued up some tip overlays
-
Stay with him Brad!! :archer2:
Dannon, is your victim getting 2 bows? :o
-
Kenny, no this one is gonna be mine! I actually did think about keeping the one I built for my victim and building this one for him, but not sure I'll have it done by the deadline.
-
Was able to get out to do some turkey hunting. First nice weekend in I don't know how long. Called a pair into range and was fortunate enough to connect with one. Trying a new broadhead this spring called a bloodsport turkey lopper. It did the job real quick.

That's a nice bird Mitch congrats :archer2:
-
Congrats, Mitch..
-
Awesome Mitch!!
I “let” the turkeys win round two today. Had four toms and two hens within 20yds and couldn’t get a clear shot.
-
Thanks guys. Every once in a while things work out chasing these birds. Keep at it.
-
Great job Mitch!! I must need a translator, my turkey verbage isn't workin!
-
I unpacked a nice looking delivery from Kennym and repaired my car A/C. Yes, it's that warm here.

Nice, Craig.
-
She's gonna love that Craig!!!
I have a 2x2 of that same riser wood floating around in the shop.
-
Very Cool Craig...
-
Nice bow. Did you lam up the riser block or???
-
Nice bow. Did you lam up the riser block or???
No, I actually buy that material from Bingham's. They have it in a few different colors.
One of these days I'm going to figure out how to dye wood under vacuum and make my own, but I just don't have the time, money, or space for any new manufacturing operations right now.
Another source for colorful laminated wood sheets and blocks (very similar to Dymondwood) is Webbwood. Shipping from the east coast to Colorado is prohibitive, so I don't use them often.
-
Calling this one done.
Time to start tuning some arrows...
The pic of the belly makes the string look waaay off...lol
It's pretty dead on.
-
Whoa Zradix....Now that one deserves a fitting name. What are you gonna call it?
-
Kinda different for sure....for better or worse...lol
Not certain how fitting the name is, but I'm calling it Windsong.
The night I was gluing it up there was a heck of a wind storm.
Was whistling through the building and making all kinds of weird howls and noises.
Named it right then...lol
-
Nice, John...
-
Nice John I like the green was it leather dye ?
-
Thanks guys.
The green is a mix of malachite green dye and some yellow....mostly yellow actually.
Both aniline powdered dyes wetted with methanol.
-
It looks very predatory. I like it.
-
Nice work on the kids bow Craig  Pretty in pink.
Zradix that is one wild looking riser. That may be the highest wrist bow I’ve seen. How does it shoot?
No time for building right now, it’s bird season. Lol. I went for round three with the thunder chickens today. Yep.....They won again. 8yds!!!!Yes 8yds, and no shot. When the sound of their feathers strumming is just as loud as the gobble....you know they’re close!! Why is it when I don’t set up with a blind they want to run right in on top of me :banghead: From 8yds to 40yds in the blink of an eye.
Gotta say, I’m having more fun and havin more close encounters than I’ve ever had. Just no meat to show for it :dunno:
-
The meat will come...just enjoy the "wait"
..Yeah it is a high high wrist...but it's the very 1st bow that actually contacts my hand while shooting.
Shrunk my groups considerably.
It's not a fast bow as I went 1.5" wide.
I just wanted to have a margin of error so I had a better chance of hunting with a bow I made this fall.
-
Went to lay out my maple composite core and discovered my 1/8 plywood templet warped over being inside for the winter go figure ! I think I will make one out of lexan ! [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sorry man.
-
No big deal to make another these composites with heavy reflex the center is critical no margin for error this is a copy of the one being shot at Mo Jam in the broad head contest this year ! By a friend of mine .
-
So Ritchie, you comin to Mojam too? I'll be there on Saturday. :)
-
I was planning on it but my boss canceled vacations for the next 2 months I have lots of friends going wish I could 🤢

Nice looking bows you fellows got on here. I spent the day doing something else I enjoy, and I'm good at to. Planting tomatoes, 60 of them this year, ran out of hay.

Mmmmmmm.. same deal cropped up in my noggin.

Wow John, that is a bunch of tomaters! You must sell them huh?
-
Wow John, that is a bunch of tomaters! You must sell them huh?
No I don't sell them, I eat them. I have a few family members that cant grow veggies any more so I grow extra.
Its kinda like all the guys on here that are always making bows but they don't sell them.
-
LOL - that's a bunch! :biglaugh:
-
I wonder if it's like the last tomato you pick becomes your favorite tell you grow another ? :biglaugh:

I wonder how many of Johnny's tomatoes have cracked?

Yellowwood, thats exactly right.
Roy, kiss my.......... My tomamtoes dont crack, you got to put an epsom salt, egg shell mixture in there.

epsom salt, egg shell mixture?

Dannon that gray action wood looks awesome ! Nice color combo !
-
Thanks yellowwood

Today I bare shaft tuned 6 arrows, dyed, and sealed them. I also skinned 2 bows with a timber rattler and coachwhip skins. I cleaned up a piece of black locust fence rail that my grandpa put up 30 years ago. I'm going to make a bow rack out of it.
And the highlight of the day was when I was cleaning up the mess from the skins I looked up and saw a bobcat slowly cross our road 40 yards away.
-
Clint thats very cool on the Bob cat there has been some spoted last year about 40 miles west of me, its preety unusual in my part of the state.
-
Here are the 2 bows I skinned yesterday

I wondered how the coachwhip would turn out.
Looks pretty darn cool.

Real nice, Clint.

There's nothing quite like a nice snake on the back of a bow. Gorgeous.

Beautiful Clint

Clint, is that the recurve you were working on at the Classic. Looking forward to seeing that one finished.

Pat. Those are 2 bamboo blanks I got from James Parker.

I don't fool with hickory much because I have so much osage. I save the hickory for my beginning bow students. I had a mis-cut hickory stave and decided to trick it out and see what I could get out of it. So far I have flipped the tips and have it about ready for the short string(right limb is still too stiff). I toasted the belly yesterday and am letting it rehydrate for a few days before I proceed.
-
That looks real nice, Eric.
-
Very nice Eric I love toasted hickory it's under rated wood as far as I'm concerned bet it will be peppy !
-
Eric, when you toast the belly before final tillering then what is the effect on the the toasted belly by the scraping? Do you have to re-toast?
-

Finally got the two kid's bows I've been working on clear coated. Now I just have to make the arrows for them. I turned some nice poplar shafts. Just waiting on the 4" SC fletchings from Sagittarius to arrive.

-
(http://i.imgur.com/Kc3DOq2.jpg)
Speaking of arrows.....
I feel a little dirty, but I finally broke down and decided to try some carbons. They're the Gold Tip Traditional Only in a 400 spine. 125 grain tips. I did the cresting and custom, lime "better not lose them in the woods" green fletching.
I'm going to try them out today.
-
It has been my experience that one has to do a bit of retillering after toasting, no need to re toast as the scorch goes deeply in the wood.
-
I made a bow rack for the auction/raffle table at the Marshall Michigan shoot next week. I made it from a black locust fence rail that my grandpa cut and put up when I was around 4 or 5 years old.

I glued a set of lams together, B Walnut cores and Osage belly. If I can get the boo worked down ill be all set.
-
That's a nice looking stave
-
It has a bit of a dog leg to it but gifting it to Brad Smith so he can make a bendy out of it , just about perfect for it , it has some nice natural reflex , I got 2 of them done hopping to get the others done this week end !

I started making the first of many tillering gizmos to put on the St Jude auction.

Nice Eric. I like your branding mark.
Got some more live oak hauled out of the woods. Can't believe how much easier the bark comes off this time of year. I basically pulled it off in strips by hand.
-
I love pulling summer bark off especially on hickory I never tried live oak , I finally got around to opening the box of lams from Kenny for my 68 in. pig hunting bow, I love the old school Bear green glass this one will be walnut , bamboo lams & glass footed mozabique & osage riser ! [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Looking forward to seeing that bow.
-
I like that combo Ritchie. The Black should look good against the walnut.
-
Ben that's actually the dark green like the old Bear bows had on them it's hard to see in the pic , Mike with the constriction season in full bloom I only have a couple hours here and there but hope to have it done by fall not going to Texas/ok area pig hunting tell next year so have time yet , but this is the first year in the last 3 that I have all my hunting bows done early so will have time to work on that one !

I cut up some tapered crescents for riser accents today... What is the proper name for this type of accent in riser?? Is there one?? I think I would like to call it a crescent accent...

A fang accent, or if the bow comes in with a strong top limb, ......a tusk. :biglaugh:
-
Yeah that is the only thing I don't like about this accent... I prefer the thin part up top but I like to go with the natural tiller of the bow after it is glued up... Oh well you can't have everything... :)
-
It looks cool !

Well we have a delivery driver on vacation this week so I had the Privilege of delivering this week. LOL, my first time face timing!! Wasn't sure when it rang, and my face was on the screen. Then Dannon popped up and asked who I was!!!
-
Kenny, some strange things happened yesterday with my phone! Earlier I was at an account and I kept hearing something, I thought it was the guy standing next to me's phone. When he walked off I kept hearing it. So I pull my phone out of my pocket and there's a YouTube video playing about skinning a beaver tail.
-
Lol , wait til Roy sees that!! :biglaugh:
Where is that codger anyway?

Kenny I just went back and read what I posted and it didn't sound real good!

Somehow butt dialing and face timing just don't seem right.

I was wondering that myself.
I think he went to a weekend long bow shoot.
Maybe he stretched the weekend out :dunno:

Nice looking bow & riser guys , Happy birthday in advance Roy take it easy on the Geritol & PBR on wensday :goldtooth:
-
Thanks guys.
Can't wait to see that one, Mr. Ben
-
Yeah me too Roy. That's just the 1st stage of the glue up if you were wondering, just the belly and core. Next step is splice and apply deflex through the handle then add more reflex when the bamboo backing is glued on.
-
Finally got around to modifying my 12" sander this weekend... I always had a problem with the table not being truly flat and also moving on me... Very frustrating and a waste of time checking the pieces for exact 90*, tapping on the table to adjust it and having less than satisfactory results.... :banghead:
Not No MO..!!!! I built a plywood frame, sat the whole sander in it, screwed it all down to the work top and screwed a 1 1/4" thick piece of granite to the frame... A couple of shims with some aluminum tape and I got a perfect 90* angle all the way across the sanding table... Not to mention that I extended the left side of the table a good 5" or so... Now I have a lot more room on the working side of the table...
I am One Happy Camper... :shaka: :goldtooth: :shaka:
That is a makeshift 15" riser block sitting on the table to test for squareness... It shows how much room I have on that side of the table for sanding risers and such...
It seems I have had to modify or tweak everyone of my major tools to get them to be accurate...

Excellent mod Rich!
I started tuning some 400 spine carbons to the forward handle longbow and the 64" mod longbow. Think I can make em shoot same arrow with 200 on front! :bigsmyl: That's only gonna be about 550 grain total but I think it might go thru a deer..... :archer2:
-
Very nice mod Rich , Kenny Im shooting 550 grain aluminums this year I think you will be suprised how they penetrate same weight as 2 ,45s ,230 grain and a 9 mm together at high 180s goes deep in the back stop!
-
It is nice to be on a site that people understand the value of a heavy/heavier arrow.
-
Hi Gary,
I kind of wanted 600 but will take 550 on a 50# bow.
I have shot as much as 600 on a 47 and it drives them deep....
-
Alot of the bow world has forgotten the need for momentum/energy over speed.
-
I have been waiting for some 2219 aliminum shafts to get here maybe a better spine for my draw they should put me at 600 grain for this years hunting arrows , the thing I like about heavy arrows in addendum to peneteration is they shoot quiet some of my bows there is no need for silencers on when shooting them.
-
Alot of the bow world has forgotten the need for momentum/energy over speed.
Be careful here, momentum and energy are vastly different things, and both are connected to speed-- momentum proportionally, which incidentally makes it better suited for most traditional archers, and kinetic energy in a square, meaning more value is placed on speed than in mass. Potential energy is just a function of the bow design, as well as mechanical efficiency.

Another model #2 done in maple and redheart. This seems to be a pretty popular color combo as this is the third one I've done. What makes this one special is that I've lengthened the riser from the usual 18" to 22". This allows me to build a taller sight window and the ability to install a sight.
This one measures 62" NTN and draws 33# @ 28"

NICE! good shooting too!
-
That is a beautifull combo Craig you put some nice art work in your bows !
-
Thanks guys!
-
Crisp looking bow there Craig...
I am making some headway with the new looking riser... I got it rough sanded and put a few arrows through her with a crappy tight fitting string... 44.7# @ 28"... 410gr. /191fps... 480gr./181fps... I'll take it...
I still have to finish tillering her and take a good bit off the tips... She will come in just under 44#...
-
Good looking and awsome numbers sweet ! I love the riser !
-
Nice Rich!! Great numbers too.
I built a special bench today for something coming in next week...…...
-
Shredd,
I really like how you do your shelf with the groove for the fletching to pass through. What an excellent idea and a great looking bow!
-
Thanks Gentlemen...
When I first started shooting the vaned arrows were the cheapest I could get... They flew like chit so I put a slot in my shelf and been doing it ever since... Good to have for hunters who shoot vanes in the rain...
Bow is all sanded... Will fill the wenge grain tonight or tomorrow and then will be ready for finish...

I've been messing around with some plain maple tip wedges trying to to to get contrasting colors. I was able to get through and through brown by soaking in ferric nitrate solution and today I saturated a pair in tea and then vinagaroon going for ebony and it worked out pretty good.

New riser accent... This bow is 43#, dark brown back and green belly... Riser wood is Sheoak, Paduak and Wenge... These are some close-up pics to show off the grain but it just does not pop in the pics like it does in person... Might post some performance info in future...
-
Very nice I really like your petite narrow looking handle design that's a pretty bow
-
Petite?? !!! You sayin' I make Girlie Bows?? !!! ;)
I think it's just the pic... The throat is 1 5/8" or thicker... I got pretty big hands and it feels chunky...
-
Ok good scale ,HE Man !!!!! :biglaugh:
-
Got around to getting some numbers on my petite "Girlie Bow" ;) today...
Numbers on the latest bow... 43# @ 28"..... 410gr - 28" / 189fps 29" / 197fps
480gr - 28" /179fps 29" / 187fps
I did not realize it at the time but those numbers are on a 6 1/2" brace height... I raised it to 7" and lost about 2 fps...
-
That Girly bow is pretty darn quick , pretty efficient design to that is for a Girly bow
-
At my draw 31 in. bet the skinny girl would bust 200 fps , the first real bow I made was doing 150 fps and I thought it was a rocket launcher 😃

Thanks Rich if I ever get south I will give you a shout but I wouldnt want to strech her out to 31 if she wasnt designed for it 😩 But I would like to see that sweet!sweet!! looking riser of hers ! (no need to respond )🤡

Got back from Yellowstone national park, stayed in Montana. It was a life long dream, and it was more than I can describe in words.
-
Wondered what happen to ya..
I'd love to make that trip someday...
-
Roy, mid June, I wore a jacket most of the time. Monday was 48 and raining, rest of the time it was pretty nice high 50s maybe 60 something. Weather should be right up your alley. I got a video of a bison taking a dump.
-
Got older today, it’s my birthday.
Got a dozen carbons, fletched them, put inserts in, and flung them at a target! :archer2:

Nice job.
Happy birthday.

Nice arras and pics.
I made the Yellowstone trip back in the '90's and really enjoyed it. If I go again I'll take more time.
We went over memorial day before the tourists hit too hard.
Too bad you forgot your camera, John. :)

I read this post toady I laughed so hard it made me P#%%. :biglaugh:
Nice shooting Carpdaddy, some day I'l get there.

Finally finished up a bow for a friend that I've been working on for a month. The limb veneers are red cedar that came from his front yard that died from a fire 3 years ago. The riser is bubinga and wenge. I wasn't sure I was going to like the combo but it turned out to be one of my favorites.

Wow Travis, that Cedar looks better than I would have ever guessed. Very nice.

That is awesome..

4-point
I really like the shape of your riser!!
The woods combo is pretty sweet as well!
Excellent all the way around.

I'm not home getting any bow work done but did manage to catch this redfish.

Which one is the fish?

I started the process of changing my shop lights from fluorescent to LED, I ordered 50 unshunted tombstones for $12 off fleabay then a dozen one end power LED tubes off Amazon. After I ordered the new tombstones I noticed the LED tubes came with new unshunted tombstones.
I am doing away with the ballasts in my old light fixtures and going to wiring direct. On the first fixture I took apart both the ballasts were shot and leaking oil, I can change to LEDs cheaper than I can buy two new ballasts for this 4 tube fixture.
I should have 1/3 more light in my shop with the LEDs as their lumen output is considerably more.
I bought 50 tombstones for $12, if one were to buy them locally they would cost up to $3 each
-
Great idea, Eric.
That got me thinking now.
I have 4, double bulb 8 foot long fluorescent fixtures in my shop.
They put out heat, nice in winter, bad in summer, bad on electric bill all the time.
LED's would be the way to go.
-
Nice fish there Mike looks like fun , I just got back from the 4th of July shoot, Won top in traditional class because I was the only traditional guy there
-
You would be hard to beat Yellowwood! :notworthy:
-
Good job, Ritchie...
 :biglaugh:
-
I'm not home getting any bow work done but did manage to catch this redfish.
Much better than the big, ugly carp I caught down at Pueblo.....

Looks like that red fish caught a big ugly carp.
LOL

Have a 4 day camping trad shoot coming up next weekend.
Made the 15 year old grandson some new arrows..

Good work there Roy. Can't believe your inconsistently inappropriate remarks wherein you compare me to a fish! OTOH, given the magnificence of the fish, it's actually kinda flattering.
Speaking of grandsons, here are two of mine putting a frankenbow to good use.

Awesome picture, Mike..

I got the bocote bow tapered and ended up pretty happy with the tiller. It's a little lighter than I'd hoped at 44# but I won't complain a bit. The tips are 85% shaped and now I need to figure out what I am going to put on it for overlay.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
I think my outer few inches might be a bit stiff on that right limb....
-
Looks good
-
Lonnie, did you use tip wedges? If so, I think your fine. I like to see the tips keep a little reflex.
-
I did, it's one of Kenny's super lams.
-
Draw the centerline and one limb on cardboard or butcher paper, flip bow end for end and it will show any difference. I line the string up with bench edge , mark center , flip and compare.
Looks pretty good from here.
Did ya get rid of the glass streak/crack/whatever it is?
-
Sure did. I took it down to 1.25" wide and the taper was just enough to take it out.
-
1.25 '' & 44lb that's real good bet that bow is fast with losing 1/4 '' of width mass looking forward to your shooting report !
-
Cool!! Now to figure how it got there, eh? I woulda thought it would be visible when you taped it up.
Lay the glass on a black surface, sanded side up and most stuff will show up...
-
Good to know, I will remember that. As far as how it got there, I would say over tight washers is the most likely but I have had the glass for a year and no matter how careful one is, things can happen in a year.
-
"I guess it's ok..."
:archer2:
-
LOL
Very nice, Lonnie..
-
Looks nice Lonnie... Do yourself a favor... Get a sheet of plywood, paint it white and hang it behind your tiller tree... With things in the background, shadows and such, the shape of your bow can be deceiving... It will also look nice and be easier to compare bow profiles in the future against other bows that you made so that you can see what works and achieve optimal performance...
-
Here yah go...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
I will have to see about that, it does make it easier to see. Thanks.
-
That works, I've seen ones with a 4" grid lines behind and you can compare limbs at regular intervals.

Got my yew/yew/boo bow all done, came out sweet.

-
Yew yew boo boo sounds like a rock song from the twenties would be.
Nice bow there, now get whittling on the other one!! :)
Yup, back when he was running with the flappers. :)
-
Yew yew boo boo sounds like a rock song from the twenties would be.
It was the thirties Mr. Smarty pants:)
Don't have a chrony but yes it is quick.
-
Running in his flappers?
I bet it is Roy, the bow I got from you is quick too.
-
The bow you made me smokes arrows too, Kenny.
Every 3D shoot I take it to, I always get comments from other guys as to how fast it shoots.
They ask me who made it and I say some old coot from Linneus , Mo.
-
I finally glued up the boo backed lemonwood bow. It was the one I added the hickory backing to that lifted a splinter so I ground that backing off. This thing has been staring at me so I finally gave in. :saywhat: I don't have much confidence in it but we'll see.
-
I made a little more progress on the bocote bow. I still have a few hours of fit and finish but I was able to put a few shots through it. It turns out I read wrong the other day when I checked the weight, it came in at 47#@28" not 44#, it isn't huge but it's in the right direction and I am good with that. It's also pushing 522gr a ballpark average of 158fps. I will take that too. I am curious what it would do in the right hands with a good string.
-
Hey Skeats what brace height & string are you using also are you using the light kit on your chrony some times with out it I get erratic readings ,my bow is with in 1/2 lb draw of you ,but at 30 1/2'', 550 grain mid 180s ,16 strand D97 7 1/4'' brace height , I use a pull threw flight bow type release if I release with a static hold it cost me average 5-15 fps ?
-
I didn't measure the brace height but I would guess around 6 1/2"ish. I do have lights on the chrono but even at that my first two shots were 260fps and 680fps. I am assuming I was a smidge off center :jumper:
The string is B50 and I don't remember how many strands exactly but I think I probably did 12-16.
I would say a lot of it has to do with me and my form. I have a Martin Savanah at 45# shooting about the same speed. I also have a Striker Stinger at 50# and also shooting about the same speed. All with the same arrows. Or maybe my chrono could be whacky.
-
I did the same thing today that I did yesterday and the day before that.
Sanded the old finish off my bow to get it ready for refinish. Hopefully tomorrow I can get it finished up and sprayed.
-
Lonnie , go with the 260, nobody gonna believe the 680! :biglaugh:
Brad I feel for ya, I hate removing finish!
-
+3 hate long sanding jobs , Lonnie for me chronys can be touchy some times location ,lighting etc , as you probably know ,but with mine I found shooting at least 2 arrow lengths away I get better results & right spined arrows , I don't know how much gain switching to fast flight will get you on glass bows, I just started making them but with natural material bows I can get 7-12 fps gain using FF over B50 , depends on bow and string count , I also found with that design you made playing with the brace height made a difference in speed , I should do some test on mine only pulling it to 28'' vs 30 1/2''.
-
Thanks for the input Ritchie. I plan on getting some new string material at ETAR so I can play around with that. I did verify that I was 6 1/2" on the brace and have increased that to 7" but not for speed testing, it just looked more right. I hope to finish shaping everything today and get it comfy where I like it, then I will start toying with speed and tuning. I think my biggest problem is that I am still tuning my form as a well. I have a buddy in PA that keeps giving me tips and I improve each time he does but it's not the same as having someone beside you to give you funny looks when you do something wrong.
-
I hope its not the guy in PA in your signiture :biglaugh:
-
Bout ready to make a whole lotta sawdust today... [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Not sure what yer doin, but give er heck! :)
-
I cut a template from Kenny's D/R longbow plan and I made the increase in reflex mod. I'm working on the form press, and grinding some tapered lams.
-
Makin sawdust is my life!! Have fun Rich! :bigsmyl:
Tim,the modified makes more weight so if you want 50, go with 45 # stack off the original (if you did 1" extra reflex)
-
Thanks Kenny.
We had talked before, my goal weight is 45#'s so I am going with the normal "40#" stack figures.
Thanks again.
-
I thought so but I wanted no surprises for ya.
-
I shaped and sanded and sanded and shaped. Then I shot it for a few shots and shaped a bit more. Then back to sanding.... I am sensing a pattern here. Then VIOLA (typo intentional) I hit the point of feeling, that's good enough. So I figured it was time to put it away and go at it fresh tomorrow.

I am having trouble with those little white spots on the top and bottom of the overlay and hoping it's not bad glue spots but I had a lot of issues getting that clamped in place.
-
I like the looks of that bow Lonnie. Lot of grain going on in that bocote. I have trouble with those glue spots on the overlays sometimes too, wish I could give you some good advice on how to get rid of them but I really can't!
-
They may be glass dust in little spots you haven't quite sanded out. Wet it with alcohol and see if they turn black. May need to fill a little and sand some more.
-
It has been a bow building week for me. I thought I would do something I usually don't do a very good job of doing...posting some pics.
My brother had surgery on his wrist and needed a low poundage bow during his rehab. He had given me a big chunk of walnut, and I had some walnut veneers and clear glass from Kenny so...
I made him a 36# static tip recurve. I am letting the finish cure for a few days, haven't decided if I will finish off with a coat of matte finish or leave it like it is.

I am not completely satisfied with the finish on this bow or my other fiberglass bows, I am thinking I might break down and try thunderbird.
-
Nice design Mitch !! Bow looks great in pics!
-
Thanks Kenny!
-
That's a beautiful looking bow you don't see many static tip recurves around here + 1 nice design !
-
Thanks Mitch, Kenny really does provide some nice product. I really like that wood combo on your recurve, what wood did you use with the Walnut?
I will give that a try Kenny, thanks.
-
Thanks Ritchie, it does shoot an arrow pretty quick for a 36# bow, but it is louder than my longbows!
Lonnie - the overlays are purple heart and the core lam is elm.
-
Just got back from the range with my coworker/Hunting partner had a heck of a lot of fun 15-45 yards took two of my this year hunting bows the 68''BBH & 64'' R/D we call him little bull he knocked his sights out on the hunt last year made a bad shot on a 6 point buck we tracked it 1/2 mile in the dead of night tell we found his glow knock glowing in a deep ravine he pulled the dear out of there like a end loader hence the handle !
-
Bend of limbs looks great on both those!
-
Thanks Kenny the 64'' R/D manage some kill zone shots at 40-45 yards that's about the farthest I shot it today now that I have it all tuned ! Now will see how it flys with broad heads !
-
Bend of limbs looks great on both those!
Agreed. Very nice bends.
-
Thanks Mitch
-
I think I finally have my bow ready to finish but am hesitating. I will be using rattle can simply because I am not set up for anything else. But my question is about the bocote, do I need to seal it before finish or is there any other special prep that I should do?
I did note that it gums up my sanding medium pretty quickly so I figure it's an oily wood, do I need to take any precautions because of that?
-
I would seal it with shellac.
-
Thanks Roy.
-
Or vinyl sealer works good before finish !
-
What's vinyl sealer??
-
Shellac is good.
http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/finishing-exotic-tropical-hardwoods/
-
Vinyl sealer is a base coat sealer that adds to moister protection , shellac is not compatible with pre cat lacquer but vinyl sealer is compatible with most top coats but not all ,the stuff sticks to just about any thing Flem turned me on to it glad he did its my go to now !

-
Mike on that vinyl sealer I have only used it with pre cat lacquer ,Im just going by what was said in the musical insturment making threads as far as compatibility with other top coats but I really like how quick it dries and smooth sanding !
-
Thanks guys.
He only began shooting last summer when we took him to a 4 day trad camping shoot.
He is highly intelligent and learns fast.
I showed him proper form and he picked up on it right away.
He shoots very well.
He loves primitive things, fire by a ferro rod is his favorite.
Here is Denny Every from Michigan teaching him.

I agree. That form is spot on! Better than mine for sure. Bow looks good too!
-
I have not been compelled to build a R/D bow, until I saw Yellowwood's full draw profile! Those limbs have a beautiful arc. Nice job. I should be cursing you for that, I don't need another project!

So is that your maximum effective distance? Two feet?
That’s gotta be rough on bows. I would practice out to at least four feet, so the arrow at least leaves the string.
-
And he made the wife/grandma shoot at the refrigerator - nice guy Roy!
-
Got a rain day & dentist appointment so had time to cut some lams , good thing I check out both ends of the Mozabique the supplier sent me a free staple that broke apart when removing had to surgicly remove the ends , also cut some thick lams for BBO from some osage I cut last year ! I put a coat of shellac on the Bocote bow today, I have to say it really brought the grain out. Which brought up a question in my noggin, can Shellac be used as the only finish or does it need something over it?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
It's not waterproof..
-
It is OK until you get it out in the weather, shellac isn't waterproof and will turn white when it gets wet.
-
Thank you guys, I will plan to spray some layers on it.
-
Shellac makes a good base for other finishes on tropical wood that adversely affect some finishes.

I have took my wife enough that she will just set in the car. I don't think she gets that staring at wood for hours is exciting. A person should go every once in a while since the stock is always changing. Sometimes it is really spectacular and sometimes just average. I like being able to touch it before you buy and the price per board foot is very fair.

Cut up some cocobolo for veneers getting ready for a new project.

Awesome, Mike.
-
Put the rug rest and side plate back on the bow after an extensive refinish. While I was refinishing I had decided to add some lead to the lower part of the handle for extra weight. Drilled from the back of the bow and added lead balls. Then sanded off and replaced the outer most overlay to cover the holes. Added 2oz to the bow. Doesn’t sound like much, but the bow originally only weighed 17oz.
Also got some new arrows fletched up and flung some at the old target. That extra bit of weight really helped, especially on follow thru.
I need to get back to my daily shooting regiment. Season will be here before ya know it.
-
Finally got a little time to start this bow. My younger daughters live with me during the summer and we've been busy actually shooting archery which hasn't allowed me much time for building bows. Nonetheless, I got these glued up.
The lam billet is Purpleheart and Zebra with a mosaic accent of Purpleheart, Zebra, and maple. This way all three woods used in the construction of the bow are represented in the accent strips. The riser block is constructed of the same materials.
This will, (eventually) become my short pattern model #3 recurve. It is going to be for my beautiful wife, Brenda, who loves all things purple. :goldtooth:

Well, I finally put a basic hot box together! It's based off of Sam Harper's design on his site. So far, I've tested it up to 150° F, which should be sufficient for making some glass bows or trilams using Smooth On. Plus, there's enough room where I put it for me to "upgrade" in the future by building a plywood shell to slip the foam box into!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180727/81b32483432c7bcf640ad2e614dd4f41.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180727/79ab8ea4b4bf8239335fea49ebdcdb41.jpg)

Split and ground a couple dozen wild turkey flu flus. I think I may try dyeing them some bright color before I glue them up. Gonna be used mostly for bunny hunting in snow.

Brad, if you think you'll hunt deer with em, don't go orange. The arrow disappears against deer color. Tried that last year!!

These will be strictly for small game. My deer arrows always get two solid white and one of whatever other color I have floating around.
-
Those are nice..

Those are nice Brad , how do the Flu Flus fly with bunny arrows ,I never used them ? Just used regular fletch & judos but still manage to lose arrows some times !

I haven’t shot flu flu since I was a kid.
Truth is....This is my first time making fletching. I don’t have a chopper or burner, so flu flu it is. I figure a big pile of fletch will slow the arrows and make them easier to find.

:bigsmyl:
Never even considered putting rebar in a riser. That should stiffen it up!
-
Thats what i was thinking because i am prone to miss my weight! these may turn out to be 200# limbs! :biglaugh:
-
I guess I am missing something here why the rebar?
-
I just unloaded the truck and cleaned the camper after getting home last night from the ETAR trip (with a couple of overnighters for antiquing on the way home). I went with every intent to buy a bow while I was there but it just didn't happen. I did however make a great trade at the target butts. I had a 50# Striker Stinger in colored action wood and swapped it for a 42# Stinger with Zebra limbs and curly maple handle. I know I am please as can be with the trade and 99% sure he was too.
-
I'm trying to get caught up on loose ends before elk season opener. This bow has been needing a grip wrap and seemed like a good starting point. I find doing these to be sorta therapeutic. Very enjoyable.

Tell more about the micarta crafting. I'd love to try it sometime.

Nice looking bow there Monty nice color combo
Love the green glass mix, Im interested micarta to !
-
There are a pant-load of videos and pictorials on making "micarta". I'm not expert enough to give directions. I can share some personal observations. If you use paper, make sure it wets out. Blotter paper, filter paper, work well. I presoak any paper in acetone' to make sure it's absorbent. Natural fiber fabrics work the best. Also low viscosity epoxy wets out better. I use System three, Clear Coat, its 100% solids and 400 cps. I also press it under vacuum, squeezes it in all directions and sucks out any air bubbles. I imagine a pressure pot would have the same effect.
-
Actually yesterday , but I bolted on a perfectly straight set of limbs on a td longbow!!! Woo hoo(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/a2affdba2ef2a214c123e11b4f136ef1.jpg)

I got inspired by Brads bunnie buster arrows & made some , nothing like stump shooting a dawn to get my mind as right as it can get any more 😃 I made some foam bunnies and was picking them off fairly consistently at 20-40 yards, I found with these tips a little stiffer spine works good, I cant figure it out but does ! I'm a very inspiring person.

Very nice Roy!
I like to build my own shafts and arrows too. Sometimes, one of my friends who hunt will bring me turkey wings and I will grind and chop my own fletchings as well. One of these days I'm going to try a feather burner.
I seldom see much discussion of arrow building on Trad Gang. Maybe we could create a forum specifically for arrows/arrow building? That might be cool. ;)
-
I just got rid of a chopper. Just didn't care for it.
Burning is my favorite. Very versatile.
The Young burner is pretty pricey these days but there are a bunch of DIY projects on YouTube.
-
I burnt some feathers in the basement one time..
And that was it, One Time..
Wife about kilt me..
LOL
-
I have an old Young feather burner that was given to me many years ago by an old archer that had it for many years. Still works like new. I burn feathers on the front porch with a breeze blowing...although it the wind shifts my beard smells like burnt feathers for hours. :knothead:
I have a nice set of Sitka spruce arrows in the works. I'll post pics when done. I made a trade for some trade points that will go on 6 of them.
-
Bet ya smelt purty, Pat.
LOL
Looking forward to seeing the arrows.
-
I bought a Vario Clipper several years ago and put my Young feather burner on the Trad Gang St Jude auction, the Vario is that good. I wish they still made the Vario but I understand that Herb in Canada is making a replica.
-
I finally got the Bocote sealed and finished up and added a really bad first attempt at a handle wrap that I will redo someday. 47# @ 28 and sends them pretty good. It's a 62" KennyM design and I can't be more please with the performance. I won't brag much on aesthetics since that was all my doing :bigsmyl:
All in all though I would say that within 15 yards 3 out of 4 critters have cause for concern.

I like battery operated tools, as I bought more my workbench disappeared under a sea of power tools and chargers.
I decided I wanted my workbench back so I built a new shelf dedicated to battery operated tools and chargers. I also consolidated my nut and bolt bins to a shelf of their own freeing up a shelf over my rolling tool box and workbench for the dust collecting nicknacks one usually collects on a workbench.
Everything is nice and neat now, at least on my workbench, I like neat.

Tell me about it for the life of me I dont know how people can work with a cluttered work bench and never sweep the dam thing. Lets face it all employers I worked for always stipulated to keep the work area tidy. So I do the same in my private life. And I hated picking up after people........... :banghead:
-
I agree. I do my best to keep my shop clean and organized. Most importantly, I make myself put tools, clamps, etc, away when I'm done with them. That makes a huge difference between a relaxing, Zen like, productive time in my shop vs frustration and anger that comes from not being able to find anything.
I'm not perfect, but I'm getting better!
-
A somewhat clean and organized shop is a must if you want to work efficiently... However too clean of a shop is either wasted time cleaning instead of working in it or not being used at all... That's my 2cents... :goldtooth:
Well I had a long talk with the Doc today and he said considering all the conditions it might likely turn out to be a Transflexual... I was shocked... I said, Ok Doc I will love it anyway...

Worked on arrows.....
You know, I've always hated using Ferr-L-Tite. It isn't that it's a bad product, it's actually probably the best thing out there to glue field points to woodies, it's just a pain to use. The alcohol burner or torch, melting the glue, heating the tips, Bah Humbug...
I swear, I tried dozens of different things instead of Ferr-L-Tite; Duco cement, various forms of super glue, hot melt glue gun, polyurethane glue, various epoxies (which don't work nearly as well as one might think), even drilling and cross pinning the heads onto the shafts.
I realized there are many good reasons why it's pretty much the industry standard, if only a guy could make the process a little faster and easier.... Hmmm....
The wife went to the gym so I decided to try this. Worked. Like A. Champ!
Melted the glue over low heat on the stove in an Altoids tin.
-
After thoroughly cleaning all of the oil and residue from my field points, I heated them over medium-high heat on the stove in a skillet the wife doesn't care about. (or know that I used for this purpose) ;)

Over the last six weeks, I built two bows and made 60 laminated poplar-maple-poplar arrows. The arrows are more complicated and time consuming than any bow I've ever built, but they're a lot of fun to make.
Laminating the shafts allows me to get a pretty uniform arrow in terms of spine, although the weight of each shaft can still vary considerably. The first two dozen, I matched within 15 grains of eachother. The rest are just what I call "back yard" arrows. There is considerably more spread in the spine and weight range on these, but they're good for recreational shooting.

Craig, those arrows are just as purty as your bows

Thanks folks, I appreciate the kind words.
Kenny, I have that other laminate bow build on hold. I was collecting supplies for the press-form when I read the Topless Form thread, and changed to go with an easier way. I ordered LVL instead of plywood and am leaning on my brother, the Electrician, for some Mule Tape.
I may use the Topless/firehose idea and build a similar form for my next tri-lam.

Nice work Tim.

I knew you couldnt resist Skeats...lol what length ? looks good !
Thanks. It's 60", I still have some spot to work out of it, I just have to make myself not rush it or settle.
-
Yep better to nail it down then rush for sure ,are you going topless ? What riser wood and lams ?
-
I am not sure I am ready for topless, thought I would keep with the bikini top. I have some maple with a bit of curl to it for the handles and will be going with maple cores. I will probably do spalted maple for one of them and curly maple for another. Once I make sure I can be successful on the form I will get in to some better looking woods.
I have thought about doing some accents on the handles but I have a question about that. How far away from the back of the handle should I keep the accents? Is a 1/4" enough or should I be farther than that? Does it really matter since they will be a composite? For now I will will just cut a nice arc on the swing jig and insert some inlays.
-
Them bamboo poles look very nice. Which species did you get?
-
He got kiln dried Madake bamboo...

I've only been making shafting and arrows for about 3 years. Steep learning curve..... ;)
Anyway, I finally decided to quit screwing around with the cheap, plastic Grayling fletching jig and upgrade to a Bitzenburger. I bought right, left, and straight clamps as well as the nock receivers for each.
I put this together to house it all in one convenient location.

Yup...Ma-dack-ie Bamboo from https://www.beautifulbamboo.com.
I started this morning to cut these poles down...but it's time for me to watch football with the wife.
I could use some guidance since I have never processed the full boo pole before. I intend to use the joiner and then a belt sander to flatten the rest of the way.
-
Damn, thats one nice looking shop, with some serious equipment! Which size bamboo and what type did you get?
-
lignaphile,
I ordered what Roy told me to...kiln dried Madake bamboo, pronounced Ma-dack-ie. 3.5" X 6'.
The shop is amazing! I thank my lucky stars for this woodworking club. Some twenty five or so years ago a few woodworking hobbyists got the idea to pool their resources...now with a hundred and fifty members we have one hell of a nice shop.
I'm the only one attempting to make archery bows, but as I do other are getting interested.
It would be cool if woodworkers in others cities did the same, rent a building, pay regular dues and figure out how to best spend their moneys to build a shared super shops.

So what did you end up using for grain filler?
-
Nice bows Rich!!
-
Thanks Guys... Bvas I used ea40 and then I sprayed extra coats on the riser... Next round I may try something different... Filling grain is a PITA extra step... I am looking to streamline things a little...
What I don't like is the Aqua Coat Grain Filler... You need three coats and if you don't sand it all the way off it discolors the wood when you put your finish coats on...
-
Looking good there Shreedy nice bows !
-
You have to seal the wood before Aqua Coat. Still not impressed with it.
-
Goodlooking bows.
-
Shredd,
Nice woodworking on those risers and tips. Three bows, that's impressive. I'm struggling with finding time to work on the just one. And now deer season has come along.
-
Thanks for the Good Words Guys...
Got a new Design in the works... It may be hard to see the lines on the paper... But, the riser will be about 3/16" more forward, angle at the fades will be 3 degrees less, mid limb will be about a 1/4" forward and the tips will be about 3/4" more forward compared to my current design...
When you add all this up, it should see a greater gain in performance... My current design is averaging 182-184 fps... With this new design I am hoping to get close to knocking on 190's door... Hell if I can get over 185fps consistently I will be a happy camper...
Who am I BS-ing ?? I'll never be happy... If I was hitting 200 I would want 205... :biglaugh:

Form is just about ready for a dry run...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
One question. The center of the bottom form seem to have a pointed shape, how are you going to fit the lams around that point?
-
I am just gonna round the riser at the point... The bending forces of the lams alone should be enough pressure to hold the lams tight against the riser while being glued...
-
A piece of hard rubber with tapered ends might be better.
-
Well, I guess there is only one way to find out if it will work. I wonder though.
-
Im just curious why you made it to a point like that vs rounding it ? Maybe Im missing some thing ?
-
Here yah go folks... Piece of pine for a mock-up riser a parallel and a glass lam... Found another way of Skinnin' that Cat... :)
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
My guess is each side is flat to the center. That makes the fit less trouble two straight cuts and you are done.
-
Pretty much so...
-
My only concern is.....Will the excess glue be squeezed out of that area before the riser bottoms on the form? Once the lams are pinned between the riser and form, you won’t have any more squeeze in the center.
-
Should be fine... Not too much different from any other riser that is rounded... It is just a smaller area... It does not take that much to compress it its only a slight angle... The lam will be somewhere around .100" thick...
-
Ready for base coats.

Yes Blackwell is Warrenville or Winfield, on Butterfield Rd. , the outdoor range with targets is open free to the public 7 days a week all year sun up to sundown part of DuPage Forest Preserve. Its been there for years. Stop by some time.

Roy, I haven't had a beer in 31 years, I had a heart to heart talk with myself when I was 40 and decided it was time for a life change.
Without the constant alcohol driven munchies I lost down from 205 to 168 and held that weight for a long time. Age and gluttony has me back up to 185 but I have held that weight for 10 years or so.

That’s pretty slick Dannon.
Not to complicate such a simple design, but many you could add a little bump out to make it easier to move with a gloved bow hand.

But how are you gonna shape the backside of the grip?
Ya gonna glue on another piece on the belly side?
-
Very sexy!
Just some mundane chores today. I'm converting one of my rubber band forms to a topless hose form and doing a dry run at the same time.
The material in the form is for an ASL for my cousin. This form builds a somewhat nontraditional ASL that has a lot of pyramid features to it.
Glue up this week.

Going to add about a 3/8" thick piece to the belly side Roy. Going to net out about 3/4" more draw with no extra stress on the bow by doing it this way. At least that's the plan....
-
Mike the form & bow look great just curious what mods are you doing to the form ? Ben that design looks awsome I thought about doing one like that with maple osage and sinew can't wait to here your report !
-
Having been rubber band form, the side bumpers were taller. Taller than needed but with rubber bands there is no concern about interference with the hose.
Here's how it looked before.
I also knocked the softwood dowels out and replaced them with hardwood.
-
I get it ,easy mod ,I know you glue up at a lower presure then me but my wood pegs popped while it was in the oven, but I think curvier bows put compound pressures on the pegs ! sounds like a nice bow you got going !
-
Oh, something usually goes wrong. But it'll be a bow.
-

Your builds always have a special grace to them, Roy.
Today I laid the bow up in the newly converted topless form.
It seemed to go well. Tomorrow will tell the tale.
A couple things I've learned about this method. The more dowels used the better is the tie down. This 72" form has 41 hardwood dowels. Also, it is essential to exhaust all of the air in the hose before tie down and, the hose needs to be kept absolutely centered on the form.
The Paracord was used again for the tie down and while I'm sure the mule tape is excellent for this, the Paracord is completely adequate. It showed no signs of failure or stress. Ditto for the hardwood dowels. There were no groans or cracking sounds. The cord needs to be wrapped around the dowels tight up against the side of the form.
Once again, the zip ties proved to be an excellent system for retaining the lay up while fastening the hose down. However, the same thing could easily be accomplished with heavy string wrapped around the dowels.
The hose was aired up in small increments to a final 75# for curing.
Couple pictures.

Thanks Mike..
That form looks pretty cool too..

I like that Mike. Pretty cool. How's the fade on the riser area? Seems that it would be hard to keep the paracord from slipping down in that area.
-
It stays tight since the cord is wrapped on an angle so that it's pretty much at 90 degrees to the lay up. I'll take another picture before deflating it.
-
Here's how the cords look when tied. The riser is held dead center with a C clamp while the cord is wrapped.

There was a little "oopsy". I laid the pressure strips on top of the glass before wrapping the paper around. :o
Thought I might have to grind it off but was able to get a knife blade under the strips and pop them off. Pressure strips are in poor shape but I have a whole new idea for them anyway.

For pressure strips I use the rubber glue on base board. Bandsaw it to width.
-
What are these baseboards of which you speak?
-
The rubber moldings ya put around the bottom of the wall in a house.
-
Roy is right. You see them more in office buiidings.
-
For pressure strips I use the rubber glue on base board. Bandsaw it to width.
1/8" or 3/16" red rubber gasket material works even better. It comes in a roll, 36" wide. Most plumbing wholesalers sell it by the square foot. Buy 3 square feet and cut to size as needed.
For me, the gasket material seems to be tougher and holds up to the temperature better than the vinyl cove base (glue on base board) does.
-
a couple of really good ideas here. Better than the one I had cooking in the back of my little old brain.

I took down the electric fence around my little food plot to let the deer in. The past two years as soon as the wheat came up they would pull it up roots and all and leave mostly bare ground. This year I kept them out until the plot was established.
-
Haha....Nice Eric. I wonder if that would keep hogs out?? Probably wouldn't even bother them.
Thanks guys. I hope you like it Kenny since you made the osage and maple for me...

And I did preventive maintenance on the band saw and drum sander.
Replaced the guide bearings on the saw and cleaned and oiled the drum sander.
-
Roy you still using the hook and loop on your sander? I took mine off and like it a bunch better. Had to reset the pressure rollers though.
-
Yes, that's the only paper that it takes.
There aren't any of those spring lock things on my drum.
I have no problems with it.
But it's all I've ever had..
How did you convert yours, Mike?
-
Dang Roy, you’re crankin em out. You give up retirement and become a full time bowyer?
-
Nope, it's just bow season:)
October through April:)
I normally don't make bows through the summer, too much else to do..
-
Roy several guys have taken the hook part off the drum. Then use the 3M adhesive in the brown can to hold the paper and still strap tape each end. I had to reset the tension on the pressure rollers and adjust the drum
. I got it less than .002 side to side. Just flip the lam on the last passes to take care of that. I find it is more consistent.
-
Ok thanks, Mike.
I really don't have any complaints with the job the hook and loop paper does for what I need.
I only replace the paper once a year.
With me making all wood lam bows, my tolerances aren't nearly as critical as you guys making glass bows and getting the stack correct.
Besides them .025, .032, etc thing a mah jigs just mess me up.
Just ask ole Sister McKenzie:)

Glued up a trilam, it is kind of a save, I had made one with bamboo back, Bubinga power lam, elm core and a hardwood that I thought could take the compression. It did not and developed compression cracks. I managed to grind off the belly lam. Today I ground a Lignostone lam on the new tape sled and glued it together, we will see tomorrow if it turned out okay.
Here it is with zipties and clamps, zipties work very well to prevent side slipping.
-
You go, Bue.

Looking good as always. What kind of woods did you use in this one? Are you placing the handle dead center and how long is it?
-
Thanks Bue.
This one is Osage belly, yew core, backed with boo.
Actually I messed up on this one.
I normally make symmetrical bows but decided to try an asymmetrical bow.
I should have placed this 12" riser centered on the 4" grip area, but had a brain fart and placed the riser centered on the bow like I always do.
That's why the riser is longer on the top.
I almost quit working on it, but figured what the heck may as well finish it.
Might send it to KennyM for Xmas:)
-
I’m scratching my head. First pics from PB were gone and now they are back. It is okay by me.
-
Maybe it's the scotch ya put in the morning coffee?
LOL
-
That is worn off by now, half past three in the afternoon over here. Perhaps I should top it off again,
-
Nice Bue, glue lines look good. I'm a little surprised at how good they look with those spring clamps. I haven't had good luck when I used to use them on tri lams. Just not enough clamping force. But you do have more than I had, and you were just gluing a belly. What's Lignostone btw?
Nice Roy. I think with your riser length you have room to play with...probably never notice that it's off now that's it's tillered.
-
I just about got this one tillered....
-
Go for it, Bue:)
Thanks, Mr.Ben...
Actually it kinda grew on me.
Different, but I won't do it that way again...
Your bow looks sweet too.
-
Lignostone is Beech wood that is resin impregnated and heat compressed with large pressure. It has twice the weight of normal Beech. When they made wood skies it was used on the edges it had and have other uses too. The ones I have is solid boards and is very strong in both tension and compression. The ones I have is 50 years old. They make it today, but in thin veneers. Made by a German firm named Rochling.
-
A lot of good looking natural bows being posted here lately great jobs guys
-
Got this one pulled to 24 inches today.
It's 43# @ 24", going to 29 inches, 1/8th negative tiller.
Osage belly, yew core, backed with boo.
Riser is Osage and the thin paduka lam is from Ole Bue..
-
Nice looking bows guys... Morv... If you are gonna post pics, you gotta post all three... What she look like at brace??
After the job was done today I have a left-over sheet of cabinet grade 3/4" plywood... It is very straight... Are you thinking what I am thinking??
-
Yer gonna make some shelves for your shop?
-
Sorry there Shredder....I fixed it for ya.
-
Looks good there Ben almost shooting arrows 👍🏻
-
Yer gonna make some shelves for your shop?
I would but I got no more room... :cheesy: If I make a new form I don't even know where I would put it...
If I do I think I will either make a Hybrid with a good amount of curve at the tips or a Pigmy...
Pretty rad profile there Morv... How's she shoot??
-
Thanks Shredd. I have only shot a few arrows through it while tillering, and it has some nice qualities so far, but I still have to tiller to full draw. It's been raining here for 3 days straight, and unfinished wood bows and rain don't mix well.
-
Got another one tillered yesterday.
Osage belly, yew core, backed with boo.
64", 49# @ 28 inches, 1/8th negative tiller.
-
I really like the looks of your bows.
-
Tiller looks real nice on this one Roy.
-

-
Thanks guys.
-

-
Nice, I'm surprised they have such a nice shop at the old folks home. :)
I put the final touches on an ASL that I built for my cousin. It came out pretty good but I'm not sure about the bamboo under the clear glass (grass under gwass?) I thought it would be a little more dramatic. Oh well, thanksgiving dinner next week so that should catch up on the drama! ;)
68" NTN, 40# @28" Black glass back, Maple cores, bamboo under Clear Bear Paw glass on the belly, osage riser.

Thanks guys, I did the boo for compression resistance but now I wish I'd put colored glass over it. My thoughts on compression resistance are probably erroneous anyway.
I'm going to put some ipe under there next time around.

I am working on this trilam today, I think I am getting there. I have been looking and looking so much that I do not know what I am seeing. To me it looks like the left limb has a bit more bend at approx midlimb. What do you see?

-
Perhaps right limb should be bending a bit more two thirds out, I think I will call it a day.
-
Not too bad, Bue but I think it needs to bend more right outside of the riser on top and bottom.
Then some in the outer 3rds of both limbs.
Seems a lot of the bend is just outside of those short lines I drew above it.
Do you have a gizmo?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Dont know beans about these but I agree for sure with the riser part.
-
Okay, I’ll see what I can do. I have a gizmo, had forgotten about it. :)
-
Just saw this but I would have to agree, mid limbs bending a little too much, but not far off.
-
Bue, I'll bet the gizmo says this.
Bending too much at both circles.
So scrape where the 4 lines are, but actually only where the gizmo marks the limbs..
10 scrapes and sand, then pull 30 times on tree and gizmo again.
Repeat till the gizmo lines quit showing up.
The last 8 inches of limbs should be straighter.
-
I did some adjusting and the gizmo runs the same all over.
The tiller is the same on both limbs at end of fades and at 13 and 14 inches from center so I leave it as it is.
I also mapped it at 20 inches draw and the limbs are dead alike which is rather seldom in an all wood bow. You usually only achieve that with a glass bow. With mapping I mean that you place the bow on a 20 inch long stick and lay it flat on a long paper on the floor, draw a pencil line along both limbs( in this case I used the belly) where there is a straight lamination. Then flip the bow over and If the lines corresponds the limbs are bending the same. The theory is that both limbs will slam home at the same time, reducing hand shock.I use this mostly when making glass bows.
If one limb had been stronger than the other i would have used that as up on the bow since arrow is not shot from center of the bow.
How do you think it bends now?

I cremated a Doe today. My furry buddy Bert, came home after disappearing quietly, with really bad breath. It just crossed onto our property and laid down. Gut shot, not by an arrow. Damn ya did good.

-
Nice!!
Did ya walk in and say I’ll take one of everything??
-
No I picked out a bunch of stuff at a big lumber box store. Got to checkout and they turned my check down after running it thru the machine a few times. Called manager and managers manager who said you’ll have to come back with another form of payment. I simply said “I WONT BE BACK” and headed to the door. Bro was with me and said “ want me to get it?” I said “hell no , I’ll buy it somewhere else. “
So got on the big auction site and got 3 more tools, a big hard case on wheels and one more battery for $20 more delivered to the door...

Might have to find another hat, we (the wife and I) have already nicknamed him "Chops" since he came out with cute little sideburns.
So for my sons family we now have "Sassy Pants", "Little Bit" and "Chops"
-
I gotta ask, Lonnie..
What's your nickname?
I could think of a few...
LOL
-
I'll bet you could Roy :jumper:
I never really had one until a few years ago my buddy stuck me with Skeaterbait.
-
Congrats Skeater!
I had planned to go hunting this morning, but listening to the winds howl as I was sharpening some new broadheads about 0530 I started to think I may sit it out and get some stuff done. Then came a beautiful sunrise and the winds died right down (opposite of normal.) So I'm sitting here drinking my coffee and thinking of what might have been. Of course there's tomorrow morning!
You know, I haven't worked on a bow in 6 months. But cleaning up my shop I've come across a few blanks and staves that may get some attention in the next week or two. It's a good time of year to slow down and feel some limbs taking shape under my fingers.
Update: Finally got my first squirrel of the season after seeing one in the backyard and making the "stalk." Longbow at 19 yards. This bow has killed practically everything except a deer...makes me wonder if anyone has killed one with one of the other bows I've made or if I somehow build in anti-deer karma?
-
Made the wife a hickory wooden fork today.
Got a new teflon coated skillet and didn't have a wooden fork.
Hope she likes it cause I don't wanna haft to wear it in a delicate spot:)

Well the last couple days got the bow glued, limbs cut out,, got them darn near totally profiled/evened, started tillering and so far looks good. I will run to "Footed Shaft" tommorow...hopefully open. Then get rest done. My first laminate bow and only second bow. Thanks to Kenny for lending me his ear and expertise from time to time as well as selling me the stack.

Can't wait to see it! :bigsmyl:

Finally broke down and built a Flemish string jig. I figure while continuing my self bow endeavors I’ll always need new strings. A good many string making tutorials are ok but some poor concerning explanations. Does the center row (adjustable) represent bow or string length?

Knocked one off the to-do list... Just sprayed... 42# with 410gr dart - 186fps...

I struggled for years with getting my string lengths right, to the point of I was ready to use my jig for fire fodder. Then I watched the video from Bodnik, the young lady does a stellar job in explaining every step in detail.

Does the center row (adjustable) represent bow or string length?
What I do is measure my bows length, "string groove to string groove", and through practice making strings, I changed those
numbers to coincide with the holes down the middle and what I measured on the bow grooves.
Not everyone twists up strings the same tightness, just the way we are.
So if I were you Howard, I would measure the bow from groove to groove and make a couple strings.
See if they are too long or too short for your bow.
Then adjust your post longer or shorter and make another string.
It will take a while but you will get the hang of it.
ANOTHER BIGGIE IS...
After you form your first loop and before you form your second loop.
Place the first loop over a post of some sort and stretch the string out snug.
Seperate the two bundles a couple inches and you will notice the strands are twisted a little bit.
That comes from forming the first loop.
Now hold both of those strands, but do back twists in one of them at a time.
After a few twists look at the strands and see if they are laying fairly straight, if not do more twists till they are straight.
Shouldn't take more than 5 or 6 twists to get them straight.
Then keep twisting in the same direction as you were and do 20 more twists.
If you don't do this, your string will end up looking like a bull rope.
When done and on the bow, you want the string to look like a nice round pipe.
Hope that makes sense.
-
Beautiful bow Rich, what are the woods?
-
Thank you Roy and Lonnie
-
Watch that video and apply it.
If ya have any questions just ask us or pm me.
It will take you a few strings and trial and error but it's not hard at all.

About to put together a recurve limb, Bjørn glass, Zebrano lams, Stabil-kore and Bloodwood wedge. The Bjørn glass comes sanded on both sides and have always been very clear, but you do not see the final result before the finish is on.
-
Looking forward to seeing this one, Bue.
-
Bear paw vid very informative as was your explanation thanks again and I will take you up on the offer to help when needed. This makes Trad gang what it is!

Looking Good, Kenny...
-
Man! You guy's are making some sexy Bows :notworthy:
Makes a guy want to get curvy.
-
Great looking bows
-
So Kenny, how’s that newest one perform? Any faster?
-
Put a custom paint job on my daughters new to her bow. Teal limbs faded into a black riser.
I’d post up some pics, but it’s her NASP bow.
-
Not fast, as expected, it lost much reflex going to 56" , did 179 with a 10.5 gpp arrow. Not bad, not great...
-
Kenny what was your final draw weight on that bow ?
-
Kenny... Are you gonna explain what your design and theory was without the super lam?? Are you gonna try tweaking it??
Sorry to hear that you did not hit higher numbers... Don't always come on the first try... At that speed it has potential...
Would like to see some pics, unstrung, strung and at 28"...

Heading out for a 30 target 3D shoot here shortly.
Pretty warm too, 31 degrees:)

That sounds fun, enjoy. I wish the midwest had as much interest in trad archery as the eastern states, we only get the mild weather wheelie stuff out here (not that I haven't had my years in that).

The closet I'm getting to the 3D range today is looking at the left over Rain dear at the shopping mall with the wife :banghead:

Headed out to launch some flu flus at bunnies :bigsmyl:

I knew the shorter bow would be making contact with limb tips with the superlam so I built it without. Learned something, with the SL 's stiff tips it bends more in limb center so it was actually prob closer without it. It was gonna be a 58" but with spalted hackberry veneers , walnut core , and no SL it came in light so I piked it to 56"
-
Ken... Are you gonna try to make some more and change some things??
I rough sanded a new bow today... Came out Even tiller... :goldtooth:

As time allows!! I keep thinking of stuff I'd try.... :bigsmyl:
-
Good Deal... I have found that if you think you have basis for a good design it takes a bit of tweaking to get what you want... Like my buddy Kirk said, "You can get about 50 different limbs from one design"...
-
And you wont re invent the wheel. Optimize.
