What I use now is Acrylic felt pen, after I write on it I apply some low heat with the heat gun.  Spray on a coat of water based poly and it does not run or smudge.

If you use india ink buy the finest calligraphy  nib you can for lettering. Fine lines look better than thick ones.

After trying about everything on the market for lettering, I have found nothing works better than a cheap calligraphy pen and white archival india ink.
